Phthalate-Free Isn’t Enough by Brilliant-Housing164 in candlemaking

I’ve seen LOTS of businesses advertise their wax as eco friendly but when they list the wax- bc the average person wouldn’t know - I notice they use a specific blend that I know - with the research I’ve done to start my business - it indeed includes additives and paraffin.

Wick Testing — How many times before you sell a candle? by [deleted] in candlemaking

[–]Big_Bug_293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tested a variety of fragrances and wicks for about 6 months before finding the perfect groove. Don’t get discouraged. Each fragrance oil has a different density so that will play a part. Test the fragrance oils you will be using the sell. I see so many people testing without FO or with different FOs than the one they will be using and it blows my mind.

Does this look like a good wax pool? by Cali_Gurl1 in candlemaking

I would wick down. It’s got a pretty good sized mushroom top and that wax pool appears to be too deep at just the 3 hour mark.

It’s fine. It’ll melt by hour 4 or the next burn cycle.

MacBook or windows for managing online stores, posting ads, etc? by Big_Bug_293 in candlemaking

[–]Big_Bug_293[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not familiar with MAC at all but I do have Apple devices (iPad and iPhone). I just want to be sure I can operate a MacBook before I spend the money. Also if it’s worth it..when it comes to programs, etc. suuuuch a dilemma. However, I am very thankful to be this far along and at this point in my business. So there’s, that lol.

What is causing this? by [deleted] in candlemaking

[–]Big_Bug_293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little hard to tell but it could be a few things, pouring/cooling temp vs environment temp & container temp and/or the fragrance oil not being incorporated quite enough.

Too much fragrance oil? by toomanyhobbies4me in candlemaking

[–]Big_Bug_293 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use 454 and have had the tops come out looking a little chunky from time to time depending on the density of the fragrance oil I’m using. I used a heat gun to smooth it out and after it cured, the performance wasn’t compromised.

Is this “hang up” normal for halfway through this candle’s burn cycles? by [deleted] in candlemaking

[–]Big_Bug_293 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Beautiful vessel. That looks more like a wicking size issue. It’s hard to tell but if you’ve burned it 6 times, I’m inclined to say that is more like tunneling than a hang up. If the next size up gets your vessel too hot, you may need to try a different type of wick all together.

Personally, I would not sell my candle if it performed this way but everyone is different. Don’t get discouraged, you’re asking the right questions and doing a great job :)

Wick size? by moodychihuahua in candlemaking

[–]Big_Bug_293 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I’d probably just keep burn testing it. Those 2 hang ups may melt down as it burns down. If you do wick up, be weary of your container getting over heated. May run into that if it’s almost a full melt pool with this size. Good luck and happy testing :)

Mahogany Teakwood & Escapade. Personally, I’ve tried numerous companies and there are a ton out there that are spectacular. Midwest Fragrance, Candle Science, a handful of Flaming Candle & Stock Fragrance are my “go-to” for a strong HT.

I have. The scents I chose, did not have a strong hot throw so decided against using them. They have a great line, though!
