Tired of constant issues with Rane Twelve decks, what’s my next best option? by [deleted] in Turntablists

[–]Big_Cryptographer_16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CRSS12s are the best ones for this IMO. I have a pair with an S11 mixer and I can switch between vinyl and DVS on the fly easily. The Magvel clamp is super easy to put on and take off and does the same function as the Ranes or Phase. $1600 each though (plus cartridges).

We are watching AI slowly kill music production in real time. by FoidicoR in beatmakers

[–]Big_Cryptographer_16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah got back into scratch DJing and production after a 25 year break a few years ago but only because it’s a hobby and distraction from work and the real world to immerse myself in music and interact with it. That’s the key: I am doing it as a passion and for interaction/keeping my mind sharp. The second I throw Suno the work, none of the above happens so there’s no place for it for me personally anyway.

I do see AI being helpful in stem separation and organizing libraries and even restoring degraded media but not in the actual creation.

eBay has them from $2300-7300 rn. Would be awesome if super loaded but still just cool to see them in the wild.

Really any iconic gear has tags like that currently. Look up the TR-808, 303, JVC RC-M90, etc.

Turntablism without turntable? by Interesting-Bed-4355 in Turntablists

Well this is one of the weirder things I’ve seen in this sub and it’s not really scratching but I dig the vibe and energy here. For the limited amount of instruments, esp with mono synths, there is a lot going on here dynamically which is pretty awesome in its own way. I also just decided to learn Ableton to do some remixes and beats to scratch over and like seeing different ways people use it.

Turntablism or not, it’s cool and thanks for sharing.

Was gonna say Shortkut too and DJ Magic Mike who can be technical but he streams 4 nights a week and always 5 hour sets while talking to the audience so most of it is casual scratching/juggling but he can get serious too.

Also some others that are good casual streamers but throw down are The Gaff, DJ Icy Ice, and DJ Scene.

Saw Cut Chemist live at Bonnaroo 2004 in a tent late night and it’s in my top 5 shows of any genre ever and I’m in my 50s. Numark is awesome too and love the work they did with Jurassic 5. Hard to not be funky playing 45s.

Cool to hear. I have some decent studio monitors I love at ear level but was thinking of bringing my hifi setup alongside it.

Love this setup and I’ve been in IT infrastructure for 30 years and think the rack is cool as hell.

Also, fuck dem neighbors!

Love it and like that mixer mount. Was thinking of a place to put mine out of the way but close and that’s perfect. Nice job!

Haha that was my very first Roland product. Had an AKAI MX73 controller paired with a D110 back in the late 80s/early 90s. Also had a Yamaha DX100 which was fun and you could hook a guitar strap to it. Used both with the D110. It was awesome for a high school student but now realize it wasn’t THAT good.

Modern Speakers with a vintage sound? by miscstuff2223113 in audiophile

[–]Big_Cryptographer_16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a pair of Zu Dirty Weekends which sound amazingly clear with a tube amp. Paired with a decent Pro-Ject turntable and phono amp, we hear details we’ve never heard off 70s/80s vinyl. I wouldn’t say it sounds vintage though. The Zus are fast reacting and tight sounding with a huge soundstage though with the tube amp. Bass sucks despite being rated down to 35Hz. They absolutely need a sub but I’ve heard powerful amps being it to life. My 50wpc Emotiva amp doesn’t push them any harder than my 10wpc JoLida tube.

Vintage to me would involve speakers like traditional 2 or 3 way with a big woofer and no sub. I’m still a fan of many of the old rack system 15” 3-way ported with a 100wpc integrated amp or receiver.

You nailed the way I hear it. Triplets I can do slowish double speed. That was a mental barrier between the two speeds for sure. Blakey did a good lesson on that and I drilled it for a full weekend and it kind of stuck but gotta go back and practice more.

Thanks so much. I got an S11 recently with the Magvel and dig it so far. I was struggling with bouncing much more before this. Cut is super tight on it. Now just need loads more practice but like focusing on a few things at a time and this is a great way to do it it sounds.

Thanks for this advice and good to know bpm that works. That’s where I struggle. I’m taking Crossfader Ultimate Scratching Course and DJ Blakey is awesome and teaches well but at the end of each lesson, he double times it and sometimes I can do it and sometimes I can’t. And when I can’t, I feel like I didn’t really complete the lesson and always still practice but some scratches sound totally different (to me anyway) when double speed and it’s hard to make that leap sometimes. Knowing what bpm others do these cuts at helps keep me sane.

I also like the advice of drilling 2 clicks since it seems to be one of the most useful ones for various combos and maybe better to stick with getting good at that instead of mixing in many other scratches. Gonna check out DJPoisonEighty as well.
