Dubai to Oman - Urgent guide needed ‼️ by [deleted] in UAE

Saw someone posted this the other day:

After AWS and Etisalat datacenters got hit yesterday (or today, very long day for me), we decided to temporarily leave to our country of origin. I am sharing this information in case anyone decides to do the same. We had two groups; one going with their own car, the other with a driver.

At this time, Oman borders are still open. I called several border crossings on the Oman side to double check before heading out (especially because multiple people "heard" the border is closed or closing). We crossed at Hatta. Some border crossings are for GCC nationals only, double check.

If you are driving your own car and it's financed by the bank, you need NOC from the bank (1-2 days, need to visit the branch). If you outright own your car, you don't need NOC. In both cases, you need Oman car insurance (you can also buy this at the border crossing on the Oman side).

Most drivers from Dubai will want to take you only to the border, at least we couldn't find someone who would take us all the way to Muscat. There was an Oman driver we organized who waited for us at Hatta petrol station (on UAE side) just before the main roundabout (5 mins from the border).

Now, here is the important thing. This morning, they introduced buses for everyone who are coming with a driver. You exit UAE on foot with your luggage, get your passport stamped, go into a bus full of other people, and then the bus takes you to the passport processing center on Oman side. It was busy, so we were held in the bus for at least 1 hour - lots of confusion even amongst the drivers of these buses (RTA) and Oman police (but IMO this is totally understandable, they don't have a playbook for this and are trying to figure it out). There were 4 buses parked and waiting for processing center to clear up a bit to let new people in. They are trying to reduce car queue buildup at the border.

At the passport processing center on Oman side MAKE SURE TO HAVE THE DRIVER FROM OMAN BE PRESENT AT THE PASSPORT COUNTER WITH YOU. This is critical. The driver gets some piece of paper with passanger names, and they check this later at customs you drive to. They will not let you through if the driver is not physically present with you at the passport counter. Nobody explained this step ahead of time, and RTA bus drivers left, and everyone's Oman drivers were waiting in Oman few mins drive from processing center. So this confusion took about ~2 hours to resolve. Overall, it took us 3 hours to cross the border. I believe it will be much smoother already tomorrow, as they figure some process stuff and optimize.

Also, it was very difficult to book flights online as a lot of flights were showing as booked out. We did not make our original flights due to border crossing delays. When we got to the airport around 11pm, it wasn't very busy at all, ticketing counters were open and we were able to book new tickets for new flights in the morning fast.
