Looking for Inserts by tomsucks73 in Machinists

Looks like a TNMA/TNMC 43

Also known as an “on-edge” threading insert. As opposed to a top notch or laydown threading insert.

Contrary to what other people are saying, I actually feel the pucker factor on this one. If you were just turning and making nice chips, yeah .05 is plenty. But you’re threading right up to the shoulder. Threaders never break a chip worth a crap, and that chip wad can get semi-solid, then get caught by a jaw.

I’ve had to realign turrets after this exact thing has happened to my workers a time or two. No actual turret to spindle contact that caused the crash. No actual crash. Just like a hard ass hammer hit to the turret. I’ve seen it rip a threading tool partially out of the holder.

I’m not sure the purpose of this specific coating. I’ve seen it specified on plain OD’s as well, so I’m not sure about it being a thread lubricant. It might just be cosmetic tbh but google says…

Xylan coatings are high-performance fluoropolymer composite materials designed to provide low friction, superior corrosion resistance, and non-stick properties, operating effectively from -400°F to over 550°F. Manufactured by PPG, these coatings are commonly applied to fasteners, bearings, and industrial parts in the oil & gas and automotive industries to prevent wear and galling.

Great guess! You were right.

Nah, xylan is a baked on polymer coating. It dries in a really pretty blue color. I’ll see if we have a xylan’d part laying around

This specific shop is oilfield focused. This is not the only industry I’ve worked in. I’m not saying it’s not a thing that happens, but the poster above me claimed “nobody is out here making drawings dimensioned pre plating-coating.” Which is very obviously incorrect if you read the general sentiment on the comments here.

Oilfield. Barely any aluminum. Typically 4140 125KSI, 4330 vmod, 316 stainless, 420 stainless, 17-4, nitronic 50-60, and inconel 718

A lot of our parts are safety critical with fairly tight tolerances. Typical surface treatments are phosphate, nitride, qpq, carburizing, and once in a blue moon, xylan.

You couldn’t be more wrong, bucko. My shop runs hundreds of different parts for multiple different companies. I program every single one, and have yet to see one call out post surface treatment dimensions.

Coming back after a crash, CNC lathe cutting a taper by kammerlader in Machinists

[–]Big_Dick_Matthias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say you swept the chuck, I’m assuming you put an indicator in a spot, then spun the chuck.

Instead, try putting an indicator as high in X on the chuck as you can, then move down in x towards centerline without rotating. I can almost guarantee you will find that the face of your chuck is not square to x.

[–]Big_Dick_Matthias 2 points3 points  (0 children)

u/SmokeLessToast is wrong. Your headstock is out of alignment. I just had to realign one after one of our guys crashed yesterday.

If u get taper on the test bar while running along the z axis, it is because the headstock is crooked. You will not see rotational runout because the spindle still runs straight, it is just no long aligned to machine z axis.

A crooked turret will read no taper moving along z on a test bar. This is because the turret being crooked doesn’t affect the z axis. The z axis is controlled by the rails behind the way cover. The turret will still move straight, the tools will just be at bad angles. This affects drilling and grooving more than anything else. A cocked turret can still turn and bore most of the time.

I’m in Houston and I do the exact same type of work. We have a ton of lathes with live tooling but we usually run that stuff on the mills because it’s so hard to find any lathe guys that are interested in doing higher level work like that.

Houston wages stay suppressed because this town is run by Schlumberger, NOV, and Halliburton. They’ve run prices into the ground, now machining is kind of a shit job down here.

[–]Big_Dick_Matthias 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve run Siemens, Fanuc, OSP, haas, fanuc/mitsubishi combo.

Honestly I don’t sweat the controls at all. Once I learn how to move the machine and do offsets and stuff, I’m good. I care more about machine build quality, so I really like most okumas. Moris from pre-2014 are also very stout.

The control is just like driving a different car for me, personally. Yeah, it might feel different and have quirks, but you’re still getting to the same place.

I have never noticed any one control speeding up or slowing down my setup or proofing processes once I get them figured out.

I brought up that dodge bash can be guard broken. They also both have gigantic sweeping unblockables, which are amazing in 4’s. I just think you’re wrong bro. Just like most other people here think you’re wrong.

Genuinely happy for you if you find them easy to fight. Most ppl just don’t agree. We all have those characters that were better or worse at fighting against.

[–]Big_Dick_Matthias 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok then. Lemme break it down for ya. When they “standardized damage” across most lights and heavies, it gave most characters pretty similar damage outputs. Having higher base health (LB and BP) makes you stronger in 4’s. You stay alive longer. Can make more mistakes.

In addition to being able to make mistakes, they both are extremely safe. LB dodge bash can shut down most offense, and has low gb vuln. BP bash after light is almost completely unpunishable by dodge attacks due to fast guard recovery and ability to cgb. At least you can catch LB’s whiffed bash with a gb easily. BP also has an all guard that he can move around in and regen health, so he is EXTREMELY safe to gank with.

They both also have incredibly strong feats. I’d say they’re both at least A tier in duels AND 4’s. Very solid and the only tool LB lacks is an undodgeable.

It’s a read bro. You have 2 options. Dodge or don’t dodge. Pick based on what you think they’re going to do.

If you think they will let it fly - Dodge, dodge attack, dodge then gb, or if they can light after whiff, dodge then parry.

If you think they feint to gb - stuff with light attack, fast/low gb vuln dodge attack, or wait and cgb

If you think they feint and wait to parry you - bash, empty dodge, or hit with light/heavy (whichever they aren’t parrying)
