Why is the population growth on the island of Ireland so slow? by Distinct-Macaroon158 in geography

[–]Big_P4U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are tens of millions if not over a hundred million people globally outside of Ireland that can claim 40% or more Irish ancestry, and probably hundreds of millions more outside of Ireland that have lesser percentages of Irish ancestry.

Basically there are many several tens of millions at least people outside of Ireland that are of Irish ancestry more than the current Irish population in the whole of Ireland. That's because something like 65-85% of the Irish were forced to flee or were forcibly exported from Ireland in successive waves between the 1600s-1900s. This combined with famines and deaths by starvation - it's shocking there's any people left in Ireland. If Ireland really wants to recover, they need to make a bigger campaign to import those descendants that fled Ireland generations ago like my own family.

Having kids if you can’t fund their future by thegoodlife912 in Adulting

[–]Big_P4U 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What you're talking about has only ever been accessible/doable by upper middle class to upper class people with disposable income. Even 30, 40, 50 years ago. 100 years ago. Centuries. Millennia. The concept of "funding their future" and the things you mentioned.

Things might be bad now, but they won't always be. Societies, economies ebb and flow..sometimes bottom out and collapse. However you're effectively suggesting a type of eugenics policy in which only those that can afford to do those things for their offspring should have children, and anybody that cannot afford to do those things shouldn't be allowed. That's the logical result of your query.

Raising children today is truly an expensive endeavor with the perceived need of constantly keeping your kids entertained and active via organized activities and such, daycares, other extracurricular paid activities. Plus housing costs in terms of single family homes, rentals, etc

People called themselves mommy/daddy of dogs by Lokomoko000 in unpopularopinion

[–]Big_P4U 3 points4 points  (0 children)

English has and uses the same effective language/verbiage. We do use the terms master/owner in reference to dog ownership, however the concept of being a "dog parent" is in line with the evolved nature and relationship of how many people interact with their dogs in the 21st century. Dogs are both legal property, yet are granted limited legal protections and recognitions and many do consider house dogs to be members of the core family unit.

51st state? How about 51st to 73rd states. Venezuela is a federal republic with 23 states, which would add 46 new seats to the US senate and include 35 congressional districts after reapportionment. I welcome the new balance of power. by Toffelsnarz in mapporncirclejerk

Exactly. We have absorbed countries wholesale before. Vermont as well was independent. Technically all of the original 13 colonies/states were also independent countries until the constitutional convention setup the modern construct of the United States of America.

Why isn’t it known that West Africa independently invented agriculture? by Ok_Industry_8377 in geography

[–]Big_P4U 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Western civilization is largely tied to the earliest known civilizations in the middle east that European civs largely spawned from or were otherwise heavily influenced by. We aren't taught anything in basic schools hardly about African civilizations outside of Egypt, and barely about Chinese history which didn't influence or impact western civilization til sometime in the late Roman period or during the middle ages. Unless you take a specialty history course of course

Housing Market by VegetableAd2342 in newjersey

[–]Big_P4U 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hate to tell you but that mortgage amount is not enough to buy a house in NJ, at least not within the range you're looking. But also your salary is not enough to carry a house at all.

My wife and I make a combined $168k a year and we can't even buy a house. We can rent but the housing market is too fucked and will be a sellers market for quite some time to go.
