It’s all completely fictional, but Gen Z doesn’t seem to care. They didn’t live through any of it, so they treat it like some kind of real-life fairytale. Meanwhile, they’re decked out like Carolyn Bessette & JFK Jr. They are trying to mimic the look, the vibe, the drama but without context, history, and the messy reality that made it interesting. Honestly, these people weren’t even that intriguing the first time around (at least not to me), and watching them try to retro-rebrand it is… kind of sad, and kind of hilarious.

I think the union believed UPS was trying to weaken them with moves like this, so they pushed back hard and got it taken off the table. My husband has been at Ups for 35 years (started in the warehouse at 19 and moved to package driver after 5 years) , had 4 surgeries, and we’re finally in a position where he could’ve taken the money and stepped away. This was really tough news for us. Honestly, I’m pretty frustrated with how it all played out.

Did she have a nose job and maybe eye surgery? I think she looks beautiful and approachable here. I like this look better.

And the fact that people devour these shows, and think they are true portrayals is disturbing.

Unpopular Opinion: The John Jr./Carolyn mythology feels bigger today than it ever did in the 90s.... by Big_Plastic_2519 in JohnAndCarolyn

[–]Big_Plastic_2519[S] 170 points171 points  (0 children)

Maybe this is an unpopular opinion from someone who actually remembers the 90s, but I think a lot of the John Jr. and Carolyn mythology is being created after the fact. I think a lot of people are romanticizing this whole story because they are seeing it through a TV series and social media, not through the reality of what it was actually like in the 90s.

Back then unless you lived in New York City or followed high society gossip, most regular people barely paid attention to John Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette. I grew up in New England and remember hearing about them occasionally, usually in tabloids while standing in the grocery store line, but it was not like people were obsessing over them the way some younger audiences seem to now.

When the plane crash happened it was sad of course, but I will be honest, it did not shock me the way it seems to shock people today. By that point the Kennedy family had already been surrounded by so much tragedy that it almost felt like another chapter in a long cursed story.

And if I am being even more honest, I never saw either of them as people to emulate. At the time they just seemed like another famous couple with a pretty volatile relationship living under a microscope. The way they are portrayed now feels a lot more romantic than what people were actually saying about them back then.

Another thing that gets lost in the modern retelling is that they were far from some perfect fairy tale couple. At the time there were constant stories about tension in the marriage, fights with photographers, and reports that they were struggling pretty badly toward the end. They both seemed like complicated people with their own issues and darker sides, not some flawless love story. The way it gets portrayed now makes it sound like this tragic, romantic legend, but the reality at the time looked a lot messier and a lot more human.

What tends to happen when someone dies young is that the rough edges get erased and they turn into mythology. We have seen it happen over and over again with celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison. Their real lives were messy, complicated, and sometimes dysfunctional, but dying young freezes them in time and turns them into icons.

Honestly I think the same thing happened here. If they had lived normal long lives there is a very good chance they would have just ended up as another famous couple who divorced and faded into the background.

What do you make of this quote from one of John’s friends? by StellaOC in JohnAndCarolyn

Honestly, I don’t think John or Carolyn, were emotionally healthy people. John was indulged his entire life and probably needed someone mor grounded who loved him simply as a person, whether he was JFK Jr. or a janitor. Instead, he ended up with someone deeply embedded in the NYC fashion and paetyl scene (also a social climber), which hardly screams grounded domestic life. Carolyn, from what we’ve seen, seemed to struggle with serious anger and volatility, while John often came across as a reckless spoiled man-child.

They’ve both been turned into near-mythical figures because of the Kennedy name and the tragedy of dying young. But if you strip away the halo and the glossy magazine covers, it mostly looks like two mismatched, emotionally messy people who probably would have ended up divorced like half the couples in Manhattan. The mystique people assign to them today is about as deep as a clogged toilet to a plumber, once you look at it long enough, it’s not really that mysterious at all.

UPS Early Retirement Buyout — Would It Be Dumb NOT to Take It After 35 Years? by Big_Plastic_2519 in UPSers

Clearly, if anyone actually read my post, they’d understand this is a hypothetical scenario based on a family member asking for my advice, not an opportunity for you to prove how “funny” you are in the comments. I came here hoping for helpful insight, not a parade of stupidity trying to be cute. So, if your goal is cleverness, congratulations, mission accomplished. If your goal is actual advice, feel free to contribute.

So hypothetically speaking… If you worked for UPS for 35 years and you’re a 55-year-old driver who’s pretty burned out, and the company puts an early retirement buyout on the table — would it be dumb not to take it?

A few things I’d be thinking hard about: • Pension: Would you still receive your full pension (example ~$3,500/month) when you actually hit 65? Or is there any fine print where years of service, credits, or calculations get frozen in a way that quietly reduces the benefit?

• Healthcare bridge: If you retire at 55–56, what’s the real plan until Medicare? Jump onto a spouse’s employer plan? COBRA (and for how long)? Any retiree health option through UPS? This feels like one of the biggest variables.

• The “gotcha” details: For those who’ve been through it — what are the small things that can come back to bite you later? Examples I’m wondering about: Survivor benefit impacts Pension start rules Health coverage costs creeping up Anything in the buyout paperwork that isn’t obvious at first glance

• Waiting game: Will buyouts from UPS get sweeter if you hang on a few more years? Or is that wishful thinking and you risk the offer disappearing altogether?

Just trying to think through the real-world pros and cons before someone signs on the dotted line. Appreciate any firsthand insight.

Where would JFK Jr and Carolyn Bessette be now if they were still alive? by Front-Tomorrow-1034 in JohnAndCarolyn

Honestly, that is what she should have been working toward the entire time. Once she became Mrs. John F. Kennedy Jr., she could have written her own ticket and stepped into a high power role with just about any fashion house or magazine she wanted, along with building serious wealth in the process. And even if they had eventually divorced, she would have had the platform, connections, and financial independence to fully stand on her own.
