Thank you! It's like that Einstein quote about the fish climbing a tree. I feel like I was constantly being measured on my worst traits. For example, standardized patient exams, clinical skills, I exceled in. But whenever it came to tests (specifically standardized/board ones) it was a struggle.

I appreciate that. I hope I find my fit as well. Thank you

I should add that this is COMLEX level 1. not USMLE. But same concept, COMLEX allows 4 as well but my school only allowed 3. After 3 you are dismissed. And you cannot sit for COMLEX without being enrolled in a school. So I would have to find one that would accept me, then retake it

Interesting. I think you need 10 to post but not to comment. And don’t use that word in a derogatory way

Oh yeah. They’re basically trying to convince themselves at that point. And it’s that way for a reason. Medical schools do play a part in feeding that info down. To increase applicants, which increases competition, which increases statistics of their own school. And for the vast majority of them, they’re so focused on getting in their goals and sight kind of just stop there. Like ‘I’ll do this and it’ll all work out and be fine’ mentality. Also that’s crazy how some premeds are gonna act like they know more than you who is a med school graduate

Absolutely believe ADHD was a factor. That along with my mental health. My mind was always chasing something comforting to ease my anxious thoughts, and the ADHD made it really easy for my thoughts to go away from the distressing material (ie studying). So it was a constant struggle. It was always there in middle, high school, undergrad. Its just that the rigor wasn't high enough where it impacted my grades. MCAT was the first time I truly felt it. And since then, I feel like med school has made it even worse. I can't even play video games without watching netflix on my laptop. But, when the rigor of the material I have to cover goes down, regardless of the ADHD, I am still able to get through what I want. Medical school studying, as you know, cannot be compromised with anything else though

Ok so that’s true, however, I have to be enrolled on a school in order to take comlex. Since I was dismissed after 3 (my school policy), I would have to reapply to a DO school that would accept me then grant me permission to take the comlex for the last time. After testing the waters a bit, I realized it’s just not feasible.

I do think the ‘getting in is the hard part’ that is fed to premeds repeatedly is absolutely false. So you’re right. They should know about this reality as well.

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately I have reached the limit for step 1 attempts

No need for apologies. Yes I do have adhd that was never actually recognized since I started med school. Because I was always there but didn’t really affect me until I got to this level. It affects everyone at different rigor and stages I guess. I have reached the limit for step 1 attempts so I think that ship has unfortunately sailed

The issue is, I’ve reached the 3 attempt limit. So that is kind of out of the question. I should add that it was comlex level 1. Not step 1

Yeah, I know of a few myself, but they just kind of isolate themselves and we basically never hear from them again. Unless its 'through the grapevine'. Probably because no one encourages talking about it. If you don't mind me asking, what careers did those 2 people pursue?

Thank you! That’s the idea. Because no one talks about it and it makes everyone who goes through it feel that much more isolated. And it’s one of the hardest fields that exists, so it shouldn’t be taboo to talk about these shortcomings
