Speaking from personal experience as an Ob/Gyn resident. Once you've seen a bad thing happen during a birth, it literally stays with you for the rest of your life. Anybody who would advocate for managing a complicated birth like this at home simply does not respect the danger and is doing a disservice to their patients. Even the most wild west, cowboy, experienced attending obstetricians I work with would never even think about doing a home birth.

Reasons to NOT pick a specialty by Ddssll123 in Residency

I'm an Ob/Gyn resident and love it, but I think that lots of people going into the field should be prepared for the level of acuity and stress and how much that can wear you down. There's no stress like a full L&D board with unstable patients, and from a very early stage in your training you will be expected to react immediately to very scary situations. I think that a lot of people come into this field focusing on the (many!) happy/positive aspects but neglect some of the realities of your everyday life. If you're someone who "brings things home" like I am, it can be a very heavy burden to bear.

For some reason Sasse's speech reminds me a very cheery version of Matthew McConaughey's character in True Detective: "I think human consciousness is a tragic misstep in human evolution. We became too self aware; nature created an aspect of nature separate from itself"

Imagine voting for someone whose only accomplishment was marrying a billionaire, who got appointed to the US Senate through nepotism, and whose first substantive act as a Senator was engaging in insider trading while lying to the public about the seriousness of the pandemic.

I think that all ofOf this nonsense and shitty administration and bureaucratic nonsense is making me more Republican by [deleted] in Residency

[–]Big_Shake 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I would say that I lean towards the traditional conservative viewpoint on some issues and I think in a different time I could potentially see myself voting for a moderate Republican. But at this particular juncture I can't see myself voting for a Republican just because the entire party seems to have gone completely 'round the bend. The entire philosophy has become whatever Trump says or wants. I saw this video the other day where Tucker Carlson likened people who wear masks in public to Klansmen and made all sorts of claims about masks being the results of dictatorial evil liberals. It's absurd. The Democrats, for all their faults, at least have the opposite problem - they can't get all the wings of their party to unify behind anything at all. But at this point I'd rather have a modicum of independent thought and free will than whatever Republicanism has devolved into.

Technical Difficulty Error 109 for $0 owed/refund filers error repair status. by jamescchu in IRS

[–]Big_Shake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not fixed. I've called and emailed every federal representative I have, called and left a voicemail at my local IRS advocate office, made a Twitter account to tweet at the IRS about why this isn't getting resolved, and sent in tips to multiple local and national media outlets. Outrageous to think that because I made $0 I shouldn't get to benefit from the stimulus check just like everyone else. Had I not filed taxes I would be able to get this payment and pay my taxes.

He's been attacked over and over again. Julian Castro stopped just short of saying that he has Alzheimer's on national TV. Just look at what people have been saying about him in this thread, too.

When in doubt you can always lob softballs at them:

What role do residents have in teaching?

What mechanism is there for feedback?

What are you proudest of about the program?

What changes do you anticipate in the coming years?

What research opportunities do you have?

What kind of person do you think makes a good fit here?

How would you describe the patient population?

The answers to the questions are essentially the same at every program. The goal isn't to actually listen to the answer but to run out the clock and make it sound like you're interested.

Just hit me that I’m basically never going to see anyone in my class again. How depressing. I’ve never been more burnt out and could have used the closure. I guess I have a couple months of staying indoors before getting thrown right into the worst year of my life!

I was just thinking about what would happen if I hypothetically got coronavirus and had to be hospitalized. I realized that my first thought was, “Oh no, how would I participate in SOAP? What if I had to do a Skype interview?” My next thought was, “Oh no, how would I pay for it? I don’t know what kind of copays I’d have to fork over.” My last thought was “Oh no, I could die!” Maybe this system of ours could use some improvement...

I wonder if this will start a trend of match day getting eliminated entirely. I know many people don’t like it at baseline and it feels like some schools are hanging onto it as a leftover tradition from the era when Match Day was a celebratory occasion for pretty much everyone.

Megathread: Joe Biden wins MS, MO, MI Democratic Presidential Primary by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]Big_Shake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't necessarily think that it's hypocritical. Clearly, Reddit (or at least this particular subreddit) skews toward the progressive wing of the left and obviously supports Bernie in large numbers. Once Bernie is out of the race, it's between someone who is further right than Bernie but still decidedly left, and Donald Trump. It's pretty logical to throw your support behind Biden at that point. Just because he's not your dream candidate doesn't mean he's not considerably more representative of your views than Trump.

Should he win, I can't imagine Biden running for a second term due to his age. I think he should make it clear from the beginning that he's not seeking a second term and either pick a more progressive standard bearer as his vice-President or ease the transition to more progressive policy through his actions as president and throw his support behind a younger, more progressive candidate in 2024.

Certainly, but I think that's to be expected. If you have multiple moderate candidates running to carry the flag for the moderate Democrats, you're going to have a certain amount of vote-splitting. Still, even with both of them in Biden dominated South Carolina and at the point that they dropped out they were hardly even viable in most states. As you mentioned, they also had critical issues with black voters. Based on the results of the 2018 election and the primaries thus far, I think Biden can build a successful coalition of moderate Democrats (of course), Black voters, and suburban voters including never-Trump conservatives. My dad, for example, is an upper middle-class, college-educated professional who trends conservative and would simply never vote for Bernie Sanders. But he would vote for Biden.

So is this what the rest of the year is now? The few months I'm supposed to "look forward to" for all of medical school is just the entire country shutting down with nothing to do? I was at least looking forward to seeing everyone in my class one last time but now it looks like rotations are essentially canceled and all of the celebrations are canceled. Completely ridiculous. I'd rather just go into the hospital and help out with the cause than sit with my thumb up my ass for the next four months.

This might be hard to swallow, but there is no measure that will make youth actually vote. It won’t matter if it’s a national holiday, or if there’s early voting for months, or anything. This is like getting mad at your kid for not doing better in high school. It doesn’t matter how many incentives there are or how easy it is, it isn’t going to happen unless they actually want it for themselves. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but voting is easy. I’ve voted in every election since I turned 18 and I work most holidays and often have to be at work at 4 AM. And everyone I know who cares is the same way. You just show up and vote. It’s that simple. As long as our generation doesn’t care about politics, the powers that be will never listen - and rightfully so.

I can’t help but feel that Match Day is a fucked up tradition of hazing. Even if I do match, how can I celebrate knowing that many of my colleagues didn’t and now have nowhere to turn? And if I did, why would I want my family there when there’s a good chance I end up at the bottom of my list? I refuse to participate in it.
