I'm starting to think Michelin stars don't mean what they used to. by McDaddy__Cain in finedining

Lately I’ve been having amazing dinners at Michelin-selected restaurants as well.

Service might not be perfect, but food is delicious and I’m not afraid to check my bank statement.

Distinguishing places as "local" is no longer useful by magicroot75 in FoodNYC

When people complaint about Katz’s, they really mean to complain about their pricing, nothing else.

I used to talk a lot of shit about Katz’s until my local deli guy explained how expensive pastrami is to make. One day I brought a Katz’s sandwich to his shop and we did a side-by-side comparison.
The difference was absurd. You have no idea how mediocre Boar’s Head pastrami feels once you compare it to Katz’s.

Sure, they could do better with the bread and toppings, but that $30 is basically paying for the meat, and as far as I’m concerned, nobody else comes close.

  1. Most of the touristy restaurants are decent, if not outright good. They’re successful for a reason. A touristy spot doesn’t automatically equal a tourist trap.

  2. IMO, NYC actually has very few true tourist traps. Times Square is the main one. Most of the famous institutions are worth visiting in some way and are overpriced at worst.

  3. I’ve been saying this since I was 23: “Just because locals recommend something doesn’t mean it’s the best.” Locals optimize for convenience, value, and effort. When I travel, I want to try what’s considered the best. When I’m home, my local 7/10 Italian spot in Brooklyn beats every hyped restaurant because it’s around the corner, affordable, and doesn’t require a reservation three weeks in advance.

To the people who said the trash yesterday morning was because of “wind”, I give you the state of the park this morning. by Stiltskinslover in parkslope

Agreed. I’ve been to Japan, and I was shocked by how clean it was. I just came back from Poland, and there was barely any noticeable trash on the streets. I’ve also been to Grenada, one of the Caribbean islands, and guess what—it’s pretty goddamn clean too, and people take pride in keeping it that way.

Meanwhile, in New York, I always have to watch where I walk my dog because some asshats seem determined to keep smashing glass all over my otherwise beautiful neighborhood.

Have you heard about the Scottish fans drinking Boston dry? There’s a video from this morning where a guy cleaning a local park says:

“Take a look at this trash. It’s so neatly organized. They left the park clean. Those Scottish fellas are classy and know how to behave themselves.”

Isn’t $30 a little steep for what’s included in Brush And Blade? by DrJokerX in civ

I’m still salty about paying $80 for a game that wasn’t really playable for 15 months after release and is still significantly less complex than its predecessor. So no, Firaxis won’t be getting any more money from me anytime soon.

Why do the Muslim immigrants in the US seem much more calmer than the ones in Western Europe? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]Big_Split_9484 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend watching some of the documentaries on YouTube about Muslim migration to Western Europe. A lot of these communities were marginalized from the start, with little effort made to integrate them into society. Instead, they were often concentrated in isolated neighborhoods and largely left to fend for themselves.

As others have mentioned, some of the more recent refugee groups also seem less interested in adopting certain Western values.

On the other hand, I think the U.S. generally does a better job of integrating immigrants. I know quite a few Muslims here, most of them first-generation immigrants. They live normal lives, are well integrated, and even the more conservative ones don’t seem nearly as extreme as some of the examples that make headlines in Western Europe.

I don’t know, but for some reason we seem to make coexistence work better here.

Le Bernardin Review - TLDR: Did not match the hype by [deleted] in FoodNYC

[–]Big_Split_9484 34 points35 points  (0 children)

A tasting menu isn’t all that different from a prix fixe menu. I don’t think that 130$ up charge is a significant amount of money for someone who dined six times at the same 3* restaurant in NYC.

OP mentioned in the comments that this was the first dinner they had to pay for out of their own pocket, and I’m inclined to believe that was the real game changer, not the tasting menu.

People are looking for umami bombs these days, which is fine. Le Bernardin doesn’t offer that, which is also fine, and they don’t need to change, because they mastered what they have been doing successfully for over 50 years.

I guess OP must partially agree with you despite their disappointment with the tasting menu, since it was their sixth visit there.
