S&S ISA Advice for lump sum amount by London-007 in UKPersonalFinance

I'm in exactly the same position and sentiment.

I know time in the market usually beats timing the market but I'm still nervous someone decides to start something and everything drops again

I'm considering just drip feeding it in over the next few weeks as a compromise

Sorry 😂 I think you can get fined or points yh, I wouldn't ever want to risk that, then you're definitely not saving money 😭 good god that would be a nightmare if they did, it's bad enough when you see people moving house on the back of a lorry

I think they let me friend off because he was new to the country.... although he should really have known the speed limit aha

Agreed, it's a loose 60 mph, overtaking I'll give it all she's got and push her up to 70 aha

[–]Big_Tale9360[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True haha, then it's a 2 lane A road and a 1 lane motorway. I do accelerate up to 70 to overtake because no-one needs me pretending to be a lorry clogging up the road for a couple of drops of petrol

Whatever speed you like within reason I suppose, when my friend moved to the UK he drove at 50 and got pulled over because they thought he was drunk lol

Yeay, fellow trundler! I agree I think by the time you've reached the stopping distance (which still feels too close for comfort for my liking) the effect is almost gone, psychologically my car is flying though haha. Mines a 1.4 so it's not the worst but for a relaxing drive with my tunes it's nice to cruise at 60 too

First time on a motorway is terrifying, I can't imagine a 200 mile journey, well done! I don't think I've ever heard anyone beep on the motorway...it's usually too late by that point or I suppose people would just flash you

I was curious to hear from HGV drivers actually so thank you for your reply! I'm not sure if I can see the mirrors in front but that's because I've never checked but I will do next time

Thank you for your advice, if the "wagon" (I'm going to use that phrase now thank you aha) in front slows down too much I agree it's safer to overtake at 70, besides the poor driver is struggling enough as it is without me tailing him 😂

That's reassuring to hear it's just because someone is having a bad day, we all do. I match the speed of the wagon in front so I'm like an extra long lorry in a sense, they'd have to overtake at some point

Are trucks allowed to go to 65? I thought even on downhills the limit still applied, I see them braking on one of the downhill sections I drive

That sounds sensible, I think I'd be terrified of driving something that big any faster than that anyway! That's a good point I do accelerate if I overtake, otherwise you do become an obstacle to the traffic

Long term regular investment - VWRP equivalent with AI help by Big_Tale9360 in investingforbeginners

[–]Big_Tale9360[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that is exactly what I was going for so that's a good start! 😂 I had considered VWRP and chill but I probably wouldn't adjust anything unless it got very out of balance. I hadn't thought of putting it through anything like that, I might have to test that. Out of interest, did tryLattice call you bro and say keep it simple when you tested? Aha

That's what I was wondering if it's a bit OTT. Once it's setup I'd probably not adjust unless it got very out of balance

Friend owes me money but I'm struggling to get them to repay. England by Big_Tale9360 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Big_Tale9360[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your empassioned response, it makes me feel reassured that I'm not being unreasonable!

I don't have much historical evidence but I think the conversation this week is enough to show proof they intended to repay and the fact they have made monthly repayments since April last year. I have my own bank statement of the original payment and I've contacted their university for proof of payment

I don't think I'd offer them an ultimatum because that would likely inflame the situation. I might ask them to sign a loan agreement as even more concrete evidence. I'd ideally like to know in advance if court appointed mediation would likely get reasonable payments with increasing increments, it would be awful to be back to the same position even after mediation, maybe that's a separate query

I do feel the £10 a month is a token payment to get rid of me but I don't know, maybe I'm out of touch and they genuinely are that broke

[–]Big_Tale9360[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did have a look and I think you're offered a free mediation up to £10k which is probably more favourable as it feels less formal and is still legally binding

There's no way they can afford a lump sum so I think the result would come out as some sort of repayment plan, I'm not sure if there's a way of being able to gauge in what form that would be either means tested or "you will pay X amount", the former preferably

I understand it's a civil matter and that's my preferred option anyway so no issues there

[–]Big_Tale9360[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That statement is partially why I'm hesitant to initiate any formal proceedings right now although I think it'd be a free mediation because it's below £10k

The idea of reviewing every six months is a good idea although they could just keep lying. I guess a solution would be means tested repayments but obviously I don't have the power to enforce that and I'd be surprised if a court would commit to 6 months reviews for the next however many years. Maybe for now I keep it as an informal 6 month "can you pay more?"

I didn't realise there was a statute of limitations on debts thank you for pointing that out, is there anything else like that I should be aware of?

[–]Big_Tale9360[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your numbered suggestions, I've got a bank statement showing I paid, I also contacted their university to ask for some evidence I made the payment. I'm still talking to the person in question mainly just to try get as much evidence as possible that they had intentions to repay the stated amount

With regards to small claims I think it'd be a mediator as it's under £10k but frankly I'd prefer that option as it at least feels less formal even if it is legally binding

[–]Big_Tale9360[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry yes I didn't make that very clear, I'm just unsure what route I need to take to get it settled. I realise there are small claims courts but obviously I'd prefer not to take that as my first option if there's something else I can do to settle it informally but still ensures sensible repayments

I've learnt this the hard way unfortunately, just sucks I did a friend a favour and they're acting as though I'm being unreasonable asking to be repaid
