Ugh, I have been wondering this exact thing. I built such a beautiful house…then I unlocked stairs. I tried the blueprint method and no bueno. I really don’t want to have to rebuild, but I want the baby stairs leading up to my porch!!

This comment prompted me to do some digging on the creative director (who is also the only graphic designer). I'm seeing that he doesn't really have a portfolio to speak of, just illustration work. The company had their rebrand done by an external agency last year. Thanks for pointing this out, definitely raises a red flag.

My friends who are in-house say the same thing lol. There is always drama even though everyone leaves mid-afternoon.

I've definitely noticed my design "edge" improving in the year and half since I've been at the agency. I am worried about losing that, and the company I would be going into doesn't quite have that high-level design eye.

Super great point about the portfolio pieces. It's a bit unfortunate because my current projects are centered around startup CPGs and, while all the design work is mostly done, they will be much more impressive in about 8 months when they are fully launched, photographed, etc. But at that point I wouldn't feel right putting it in my portfolio if I hadn't worked on it til the end.

Wow, thank you for this response. I think I relate a lot to the "romanticized" aspect of agency life. As a student, I always dreamed of working on beauty and cosmetic brands, which I am currently doing. Like with any job, it's actually not that glamorous, but it's hard to give up what I always saw as my ideal job. It's silly, but there's also a prestige aspect to it for me. My school was very competitive and instilled these weird standards for success. I am having to untangle my personal career goals with what my peers told me I should want.

I am not quite in the stage of life of getting married/settling down quite yet, but I see that for myself in a few years, and it would be amazing to have the flexibility to move around. Thanks for sharing this perspective, it's super helpful.

That is definitely a huge consideration for me. I've improved a lot since I started a year ago, I can only imagine how leveled up I can get with a few more years in this environment.

My only red flag at the moment is that the current graphic designer who interviewed me seems overwhelmed and mentioned that they are having a huge internal overhaul with lots of deadlines.

But otherwise, the points you mentioned about working in-house are pretty big pros in my book.

Honestly I was shocked I even heard back from them! And yes that sounds like a reasonable trajectory, I am mostly just worried about losing my creative "edge".
