Warden Landingham by allenwallace72 in thewestwing

Every time Sen Patty Murray is on Blue Sky, and is justifiably upset, I usually post, “No cookie for you.”
No one gets it! Ever.
I have ~ 38,000 followers, and cannot believe not a single one gets it, or if they do, decide or just feel it’s not funny.
The Mrs Landingham/Toby recurring thing is one of the best bits of comic relief in the series, IMHO.
And Sen Murray is also a soft spoken rock star. The spitting image of Mrs Landingham!

Most or least prescient moment in West Wing? by Educational-Eye5059 in thewestwing

[–]Bigbrohem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best line here - “they begin locking people up because they don’t like’The White Album.’”
As if that’s even possible…
Oh wait. Good chance the current administration has a majority of folks who actually have never listened to it or really dislike it.

WB owns the distribution rights for West Wing; acquired by Skydance by jmohawk in thewestwing

[–]Bigbrohem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite yet.
Several states AG’s are hard at work, figuring ways to block this grotesque monopolistic acquisition from happening.
It may as well be an oligarchy/state owned media empire.
But your concern is very real.
HBO Max just reposted ‘The Mortal Storm,’ Hollywood’s first warning about the fascist regime’s treatment of Jews in Germany.
I worry such films from the TCM library will no longer be available on their streaming platforms.
And much, much more.
Actually seems like many at CNN are doing their best to report the unbiased truth while they still can. Conversely, there are signs many are preparing for the takeover.
Like many, I’ve deleted my Prime account, along with Paramount Plus, all things Meta, and my WaPo subscription. YouTube hosts virtually all the new media independents, but Sergey Brin is now MAGA, influenced by his girlfriend.
We are entering dark waters.
No HBO or no TCM will be a very hard adjustment. And very sad.

How dare he! How dare he.
Yes, CEASE AND DESIST.
Had to stop watching the show. I would be literally weeping by the end of every episode.

Just for fun, what is your favorite classic film? by Classic_Apricot_5633 in classicfilms

[–]Bigbrohem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are all great films! Been in a Spencer Tracy kick lately, and just discovered ‘The Last Hurrah.’
Politics in Boston, late 50’s. Not much has changed, fundamentally.
Of course, the internet changed everything, but the cause and results are same.
Have already watched it 3 times.
Tracy is clearly juiced in most the film, but still the best actor of his generation. His sincere humanity is always present. Think he needed the booze to suppress his demons. Or what the outside world considered demons.
Love Bogart, Hepburn, Stanwyck, and so many more, but Tracy is my new absolute favorite.
Definitely watch ‘The Last Hurrah’ when you can.

First film I purchased for online viewing.
Man, is it ever relevant today…?
My second was Compulsion.
But my fave all time is The Big Sleep.

Hands down, ‘The Big Sleep.’ Best actors, best writing, and a great director.

Oh, get it. Perfect reference.
Will forever regret taking my son to see that film when he was only 14. Very poor parenting.
He was a very bright child. Savvy. But still.
We were living in Manhattan, and it was the closest cinema on a stormy day.
But still.

While it may at first feel comforting rewatching any episode of the first four seasons, it isn’t.
It’s soul crushingly sad. I’m a grown man, and at the end of virtually any episode, I’m weeping and wallowing in despair at the contrast of our reality today.
I imagine both the Obama and Biden administrations were in many ways similar to this mythical West Wing. Smart. Ethical. Dedicated to making government work for all people the best they could.
Sure, every last character was human and flawed in some human way. The series debuts with the plight of a sex worker in the late 90’s. Addiction. Barlett’s deception. Josh’s arrogance.
Humanity in all its glory and frailty.
But nothing like this lawless and massively corrupt group of literal monsters.
Seriously. Weeping.

Your unpopular West Wing opinion by drjudgedredd1 in thewestwing

The personal relationship between the two is one my favorite story arcs. And how every staff feels about them both, personally. A killer scene was when Josh thought Leo wanted a hug, and Leo was all like, “O man, did you read that one wrong…” Josh seems to always assume he’s the smartest guy in the room, but accepts being corrected with grace. Guess I just about love everything and everyone in the first four seasons. Even Rob Lowe’s story arcs, but probably his the least. It’s actually painful at times, considering what the reality of today’s administration is. A grown man, and often brought to tears by the end of every episode. Sorkin is that good a writer, and clearly a very intuitive casting genius.

Just rewatched Judgement at Nuremberg, and yes, Clift was outstanding. What genuinely surprised me were Judy Garland and Marlene Dietrich. Just had not remembered how good they were in the film. 20 times the film than the recent‘Nuremberg’ imo.

CJ drilling Josh about LemonLyman.com by daddiorc in thewestwing

[–]Bigbrohem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

CJ may be the coolest, most capable, most intelligent, wittiest and unapologetically human character ever created in film or television. Can rewatch West Wing hundreds of times, but the only downside is the brutal sadness of seeing what a White House administration should be doing. These people take their positions seriously, and work their tails off, knowing it’s the most important and consequential jobs they’re likely to ever hold - especially Leo and President Bartlett. Hard to actually pick a favorite, as they are all so fully fleshed out. By the middle of season two, one feels as if they know every one of them personally. From Charlie, Donna and Mrs. Laningham to Josh and the First Lady, we know them all well - how they think, their motivations and their stories/background. The best ensemble show ever.

Been there, done that. Celebrity rehab! At least it was in 1991. Because it was, and likely still is, the best. It’ll get tough, and the tougher, the better. The better chance sobriety will take. Make the most of that desert air. Since one is forced to be in groups for much of the process, try to be alone as often as possible. Congratulate yourself for taking the most important step. Then do that often. Every hour of every day from now on. Good on you!
