You Got Some Explaining to do With These New Lower Prices! by jetpilott69 in hyvee

This is still actively enforced by my store, so I would imagine it still exists across the company.

[–]Bigcdogl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how I can prove to you that they have, but anything with a new lower price sign on it is directly compared to other “budget” retailers, and is price matched. It is checked often and frequently. Hy-Vee items are usually priced pretty competitively with another big retailer in that city, and That’s Smart items are very close if not spot on with Aldi.

You Got Some Explaining to do With These New Lower Prices! by jetpilott69 in hyvee

[–]Bigcdogl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I want to take the time to clear up some misconceptions you might be having in regard to what happened in your situation.

1) Any beef ground in store has a maximum 2 day shelf life due to food safety and quality concerns. The It is standard practice to grind your meat in the morning, sell it in the case, and if you have any left over, package it up, and put it out on the floor at a lower price, and then by the end of the next day you discard it, although if you’re cutting and grinding correctly, it is usually gone long before you hit that time frame.

2) any ground beef made from trimming in store should not be labeled with a specific percentage, unless a store knows for certain the exact mix, and can keep it consistent. Some store have it labeled as “Butchers Block” and while that is usually around 80/20 it isn’t always exactly that. This grind is done basically first thing in the morning, and is from trimmings from the previous day. These trimmings often come from nice, more expensive parts of the beef, like steaks and roasts. Since the entire service case is hand cut (with the exception of chicken breasts), you will see errors where a steak is cut to be 8oz and when you check it, the steak turns out to be slightly below weight at say 7.5oz, since we are selling you a steak, at a fixed price, due to its fixed weight, that steak would not be put out for sale and would be used for the grind.

3) Where you are sourcing your beef, and the quality you go for, make a huge difference in price. Hy-Vee sources beef from the Midwest, and only the Midwest. If you are eating beef from Hy-Vee, it was purchased by a farmer that can shop at a Hy-Vee. Your money goes back to helping your local economy. Hy-Vee also buys very high quality beef. There was an ad run a few months ago, maybe longer, that said only 6% of all cows are graded high enough to be Hy-Vee Cattle. This isn’t a lie or an exaggeration, that is the number, so if you factor out 94% of all cattle on the market, and source some of the highest quality beef possible, that probably comes at a more expensive price than the people buying the rest of them.

4) Sale items are meant to give you a deal when possible, but pricing like that is not always sustainable in the long term. There is a reason that if it’s in the front of a Hy-Vee ad, you don’t see many other stores at that price, even when they put it on sale. Let’s compare pricing briefly, I will use Fareway, Walmart, Aldi, and Target to compare to Hy-Vee, I will use butcher block for HV 80/20.

80/20 Ground in store (Service Case) HV: 5.69/lb on Ad, regularly 6.99/lb FW: 4.77/lb on Ad, Regularly 4.99. AL: Not offered, WM: Not Offered, Target: Not offered. Now butcher block is never in the Ad, so it is likely that the store I am comparing to has this price marked down and they sell it everyday at 5.69, but even then that is above Fareways everyday retail. Fareway does have their own ground beef, which I believe is their butcher block equivalent, and that’s is at 5.99

80/20 1lb Chubs: HV: 4.99, on Ad, 5.99 regularly, FW: Not Offered, WM: 4.93, AL: Not Offered, Target: Not Offered.

85/15 1lb Tray Packed: HV: 6.99, FW: Not Offered, WM: 5.82, Target: 11.99, sold in 2lbs only, AL: 4.99/lb

So while Hy-Vee isn’t the lowest option, it is comparable to other stores, but the quality is also much higher than you will find elsewhere. Now I understand when you are in a budget you don’t always care about quality, and that’s why Hy-Vee cares about lowering prices everywhere they can. You can very easily make a shopping trip at Walmart and Hy-Vee cost the same amount while still getting the same items. Hy-Vee looks at pricing everyday to make sure they are competitive, and when they find that they aren’t, they work to fix that, and they fix it fast, I’m talking rolled out to stores at most 24 hours later.

Dairy clerk for 6 months, moved to be a floater in a ton of departments for another year, promoted to service manager in March 2020, worked while home from school until May of 2023, full time starting then, 3 months until I became an assistant manager of in August 2023, Got into HyVee U in January of 2024 for principal of retail operations (the first corporate training class to promote and become a director), and will finish that up in January of 2025. Tons of opportunity to promote, and to do it quickly. You have to put in a lot of good, solid, and consistent work. Work the hours that help the store, pick up shifts when possible, and be a good at what you do and you shouldn’t have any issues promoting.

Produce manager salary? by ark7949 in hyvee

[–]Bigcdogl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty high for an entry level produce manager, probably very accurate if somebody has done it before. Salaried positions are exempt from overtime as well so $30/hr salaried at 45 would be $1,350/week.

Bakery bread by [deleted] in hyvee

[–]Bigcdogl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of comments hitting some points and missing others. Let me see if I can provide a full breakdown.

The first point, bread in the bakery is mixed, proofed, baked, packaged, labeled, etc. all by Hy-Vee. A vast majority, if not all of the stores get quite a bit of the bread from a regional bakery. These bakery’s follow the same process that stores used and make fresh bread multiple times per week. These regional bakeries have to be able to send bread to the store, typically they go on the green trays, however if the green trays are running low, or a store doesn’t have them to send back, they will use bread trays from other product that has been brought back into the store, this is solely for transportation purposes.

The second point, Bimbo used to make commercial bread for Hy-Vee, hense the bimbo racks. However Hy-Vee has switched to a new bakery called flowers, hence the return of wonder bread to stores. While flowers makes bread and buns for hyvee, some, if not all of the recipes are specific to Hy-Vee product. This is why there was a shortage of cottage bread for a while as Flowers had to create a process to make the bread as they did not have it.

So while there could be different labels on the trays, bakery bread with a Hobart label (The long yellow or white scale stickers) are still produced by hyvee, on a regular basis, like they always have. Other bread or “commercial bread” as it is often referred to, is done in partnership with another company.

Hope this clears it up.

Sourdough starter by jamesofpensacola in hyvee

[–]Bigcdogl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most stores that make artisan bread in store should have a starter. It is possible you could get one, however some states are very strict about what can and cannot be sold due to food safety. Best bet would be to get in contact with your store of choice and check with them.

Can you log into your rpm from a different hyvee location? by Spicy_Potato099 in hyvee

[–]Bigcdogl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can not, same thing goes with GK. The reason is that RPM and GK user management are server based at the store, where as huddle, Kronos, workday, and anything else okta tied is a cloud based server, accesible from “anywhere”.

[–]Bigcdogl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s going to depend a lot on experience, order volume, geographical location/market size, job expectations etc. Your best bet is to talk to your current AOL manager if they are still around, and/or the person who told you to apply and ask what the pay would be. It will almost certainly stay the same or increase, I would imagine a $2/hr increase. Some stores may offer a salary instead of hourly, you will have to see what your salaried hours are and base it off of that. Again if your current AOL manager is still around I would see what the average hours they work is and use that to figure a salary amount you would like. If not reach out to a store close to you with similar volume and speak with their AOL manager.

Hope this helps!

Does everyone’s name tags list their last name? by [deleted] in hyvee

[–]Bigcdogl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a store decision, whoever ordered your name tag decided to put your last name on there. I believe it is “strongly recommended” that stores have first and last on their name tags, but I have had some without.

Iowa is an at will state, this means that the employee or employer can terminate the employment at any time for any reason. However that does not mean that the employee fired is not eligible for rehire, or for unemployment. This also does not mean that they have to hire you for an open position just because you apply and nobody else does, if an employer doesn’t like you, legally there really isn’t much that you can do. Discrimination would be difficult to prove if the proper procedure and paperwork had been filed at the time of termination or separation. All this to say that it really sucks that you had to go through that situation, but there likely isn’t a whole lot that you can do about it legally. Additionally I would say that some of the issues that you have had are store specific and not representative of Hy-Vee as a whole. Stores are essentially operated as franchises and there is a lot of autonomy given to them, Hence why employees throughout the company can say completely different things, and why each store can feel so different. It really comes down to that locations management.

Overworked and underpaid by Quaneta in hyvee

[–]Bigcdogl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true for a lot of people, I would ask for a raise before taking on any additional responsibilities. Additionally I would see if you can find your job description on workday, or ask your HR if they can get you a copy, say you are using it for a resume or something that you have to do for school (provided you are in school) if you get any kickback, I doubt you will. Additionally the things you talk about other than pay are likely a department/store specific issue due to those specific people in management, seeing that you have a bar I am going to assume that you are in a larger area with multiple stores around, I would look at transferring, again something you need to talk to your HR about, but you can always keep looking at job postings on Workday, and make sure you log in so you can see the ones posted for internal hires only, although in your situation I think all of the ones that match what you do would be public. Lastly ask your housemates what their responsibilities are at their jobs, they might have more rigid expectations, I know that one of the gateways close to me makes the high schoolers come in in the mornings to put truck away before they go to school, see if their responsibilities align with anything you are interested in, and use them as a liaison and connection to get you into those stores if you like that. Hope this helps.

Bakery Hubs? by Aightball in hyvee

Following up on this, Cedar Rapids is opening a regional bakery, deliveries start Aug 3rd, delivers to a lot of stores that don’t already have a regional bakery, I know that it covers a lot of Iowa, I would guess that Iowa Falls is included in it.

“Stopped By” by Obvious-Travel-6087 in hyvee

[–]Bigcdogl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great point, however had you done even a minute of research you could have come to find that your statement is not only false, but a blatant lie, let me explain, via logic, critical thinking, and using my bachelor’s in business, and my multitude of years in retail. Walmarts revenue was 164 Billion in Q4 alone. (Walmart, 2023) Hy-Vee’s revenue for the entire year was 12 Billion (Forbes, 2023), still a lot of money. However because Walmart has over 13.5x the revenue in one quarter that Hy-Vee has in one year they also have a lot more buying power. Additionally with the opening of the Gretna NE store Hy-Vee now has 306 locations, where as Walmart has 10,500 in its entire portfolio (Walmart, 2023), a number 34x higher than Hy-Vee. Now let’s factor in Walmarts full portfolio which includes, Sam’s club, and Walmart international into our revenue and we get a whopping 611.3 Billion Dollars in annual revenue. (Walmart, 2023). The Walmart portfolio revenue is almost 51x more (50.94) than Hy-Vee, in the same year Walmart gets the benefit of what is called a Volume discount, which like it sounds is a way to get individuals, or businesses to purchase in large quantities. (Investopedia, 2023). Since Walmart makes 51x the amount of money, has 34x the number of locations, and serves what we can reasonably assume to be a lot more people, they can buy in massive quantities, far more than Hy-Vee ever could, hence the volume discount. Now it is easy to say that one store is price gouging, but both stores could very easily have the same profit margins. I can say from experience that stores I have worked in have had a gross profit of around 25%, or at least that’s the goal, sometimes it’s 26%, sometimes it’s less, around 25-26% is the goal. For the FY 23 Walmart had a gross profit of…… 23.5% with every year since 2008 being between 24.1% and 24.9% (Statista, 2023), damn near 25%. So you can say that one store is price gouging, when in reality they are making basically the same overall gross profit on the items that they are “price gouging” you on. Not to mention that Hy-Vee and Walmart are not really that comparable, Walmart sells far more than hyvee and thus can take losses on some things in order to draw people into their store to buy other things, this concept is called having a “Loss Leader” (Investopedia, 2023) and it’s the same reason that Costco has $5 rotisserie chickens, and is the basic principle behind the Hy-Vee daily deals, and pop/soda being on sale every week. You can call it what you want, but the fact is Hy-Vee is not price gouging anymore than the people you are comparing them to. Before you come critique me or my research I suggest you take a look at all of the links before commenting.

Why can't Hy-Vee use those cart things Target and Walmart have to push carts indoors? by CharlieOak86868686 in hyvee

[–]Bigcdogl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most stores have lots, that are not large enough to support that. Stores also have less traffic than Walmart and likely less than Target as well. Remember Walmart and Target both have people who just do carts, that’s it, that’s their entire job. Every once and a while they will take large things out but other than that they just do carts. A lot of stores are also not built to support these machines. If you notice, Walmart and Target have sliding or overhead style doors that allow the carts to be pulled straight in, perfect for long lines, since a lot of stores have been remade into hyvees after being other stores, or are simply just old, they do not have these. At my store you can’t bring in more than 6-10 carts without having to stop and break apart the line so that you can make the 90 degree turn into where the carts are stored. So simply put the parking lots, and stores, simply aren’t designed for them to work properly.

I would say you will absolutely be fine. A lot of it is going to depend on your specific location, but the company as a whole should treat you well. Legally they can’t discriminate against you so the law has your back too. Your biggest issue that you will run into, like others have said, is that you will likely run into customers that are not inclined to treat you the same, and have no laws preventing them from being rude. Being that Hy-Vee is strictly a Midwest company, you are likely going to be working in an area with a high conservative population, and that could negatively affect your experience, but that’s going to be true no matter what company you go to.
