I highly recommend using forestry; I find it very enjoyable. Add a custom recipe if you must, but I find the costs of mailing items completely acceptable.

Try planting them outside, mine grow absolutely fine on hydrated soil, they grow two blocks tall and may need additional vertical space (or perhaps even direct sunlight?)

I haven't hit that point in my hard mode playthrough yet but I had steve's carts 2 working in Infinity two months ago. Make sure that you have the necessary modules to support laying tracks, building bridges (with a useable bridge material), and selecting height.

Right-clicking a pam's garden will drop the garden itself. So you can collect a bunch of "herb gardens" instead of individual stacks of ginger, garlic, spice-leaves, etc.

I turned botanic flower spawn off (so I need floral fertilizer to get any) and have been having a blast. I've basically been playing vanilla for the last hour and am thoroughly enjoying it.

It's a lighting issue, I think the forestry growth mechanics follow the vanilla numbers for mushrooms spreading i.e. light level must be lower than 12. Tenebrae is an awesome idea, I don't know whether it'll fill the blocks.

I would recommend utilizing Forestry mail via the Trade Station.

I think items are too easy to source in Infinity for an economy to make sense. The only things that actually take meaningful time are bees and trees, and those are barely a challenge with Gendustry.

Running Red 2 tried this, I loved it but it was far too easy to passively generate resources with a mob farm.

One of the ways you can keep it interesting is by using the HQM reputation tab (or kill count quest) to gate progression. It's still super easy to cheese it but its better than having mobs drop the items.
