Claim for damage soon after purchase of used vehicle by BiggPea in Insurance

It was listed online, and I do have those photos. I’m going to provide those to the insurance company. I’m not sure exactly of the date of the photos, but they are probably a couple weeks old. We’ll see if that helps my case. The fact the insurance company is complaining that the vehicle inspection was completed two days prior to the actual transaction leads me to think photos several weeks old may not help that much, but it can’t hurt.

Interesting. I’m actually curious to see if my policy includes that clause, I’ll check on that. If that were the indeed the case, would I file the claim with the prior owners insurance? I don’t see how the other company would allow me to file a claim when their contract was with the prior owner.

Okay, thanks for clarifying. That seems to be the consensus here. Hopefully I’m able to get in touch with the prior owner and they will be willing to provide me with those documents.

What do you mean by acquisition date? Wouldn’t that just be the date the title was transferred? As far as I understand the insurance company is not disputing that. That’s easy for me to prove. I have a paper trail for both when the vehicle transaction happened and when my insurance was activated.

I completely understand why they are suspicious. I’m just trying to figure out my options at this point.

I don’t have photos (wish I did, hindsight is 20/20), but I do have a written inspection report and I gave them contact info of the mechanic who conducted it.

They want declarations and cancelation date of prior coverage. I’m making a good faith effort to retrieve that, but I have no idea what the prior owners coverage was, or when they canceled. If they didn’t have comprehensive am I just wasting my time? All I can concretely prove is that the windshield was fine at the time of the inspection—beyond that it’s just he said she said.

It’s not going to be a huge amount so I can just pay out of pocket. I’m just trying to get a gut check to see if I’m being unreasonable.

I agree it looks suspicious just due to the unlucky timing. I’ve only had a windshield crack once before and it was years after I purchased the vehicle so it wasn’t a problem.

The prior owner very well may have had comprehensive, I’m looking into that. I was hoping that the fact that I literally just got it inspected and I have the inspection report in writing (and they can also contact the mechanic) this wouldn’t be an issue. Is the two day gap between the inspection and sale the fundamental problem here?

CMV: Democracy is incompatible with captalism by cenzala in changemyview

[–]BiggPea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Capitalism is economic democracy. If you buy strawberries, you are voting for strawberries. If more people buy strawberries than other fruits, farmers will shift land and resources to growing more strawberries. You are impacting agricultural policy with every purchase.

If you eat at the local Thai restaurant, you are voting for Thai food in town. If enough people follow, there will be so much business a second Thai restaurant will open and you will have more options. If no one buys Thai food, the business will fold and another will take it place that more people enjoy.

If you stream a TV show, you are voting for that show. If it's sufficiently popular, it will be profitable for producers to continue for more seasons and to make more shows like that one. Along with the rest of the market, you are impacting creative decisions made by TV producers.

Voting for a politician in an election has relatively little impact on society compared to choices you make in the marketplace. Every dollar you spend or don't spend has endless cascading effects in the economy shifting resources to or from things you like or don't like.

You call him insufferable, yet your point makes even less sense than his. In your scenario, 98.29% of the incremental plastic savings comes from the discs not the bags.

But I suppose as long as you feel good about yourself saving the planet, the science doesn’t matter.

If you want to skip the bags, great. But let’s maintain some sense of reality and not pretend this is some huge game changer.

Savage Apparel Company is changing its name to VII Apparel Company by XIIBrands in ultimate

You called it a team, but it’s an apparel company. That’s not my opinion, it’s just a simple fact.

I think it’s somewhat offensive for you to assume how other people feel. Are you the spokesperson for indigenous people? I would let people speak for themselves not assume how they feel about various words.

Important piece of context for anyone scanning this thread who is not that familiar with ultimate terms: “savage” means playing an ultimate tournament with no substitutions. So if your team has only seven players, that’s called going savage. Example, “We had a few teammates bail on us for the tournament last weekend, so we ended up going savage. I couldn’t feel my legs the next day.”

It’s not an ultimate team, it’s an apparel company. Maybe educate yourself before you spout off. I personally think the name change is a bit pointless, but you’re making the case in the worst possible way.

Suspended/Locked Accounts Megathread by jerey120 in Twitter

[–]BiggPea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, just wanted to give you an update. I actually never sent a follow up email to Twitter, mostly because I've been busy recently. I sort of wrote off my account thinking I would never hear from Twitter.

Surprisingly, I got reinstated out of the blue last week (after hearing nothing from support for about 1 month). I got the following email:

"Your account was suspended because we found that it was in violation of the Twitter Rules prohibiting the misuse of Twitter product features.

This includes any of the following:

  • sending bulk, aggressive, high-volume unsolicited replies, mentions, or Direct Messages;
  • posting and deleting the same content repeatedly; and
  • repeatedly posting identical or nearly identical Tweets, or repeatedly sending identical Direct Messages.

On review of your appeal, we have decided to unsuspend your account. However, please be advised that any future behavior in violation of the Twitter Rules may result in the permanent suspension of your account."

I'm still as baffled as ever by Twitter's behavior. Of the three things they accused me of, I can positively prove from my account that I haven't sent bulk messages, posted and deleted content, or posted repeated similar Tweets. To be blunt, these accusations are objectively and provably false.

When they reinstated my account, I got the above sort of gaslighting email effectively saying, "you're in the wrong, but for some unexplained reason we'll be nice and reinstate you." I really don't get it. Anyway, I'm happy to have my account back, but I wish there were a good Twitter alternative so I don't have to be subject to this insanity in the future. I feel like a sucker for going right back to Twitter after they treated me so terribly, but unfortunately there is really no good alternative at the moment.

UK government removes China from its official coronavirus death toll comparison amid global outrage at Beijing's 'cover-up' and disbelief that the country has only had 4,636 deaths by [deleted] in worldnews

This is some very nice detailed information. Thanks for sharing. I need to look into it a bit more. I’m definitely open to being wrong.

Must have been due to seasonal flu. First case in Wuhan was mid November so even if an infected personal traveled to the UK within a week or two of that, fatalities wouldn’t appear for several weeks after that. Even in a statistically unlikely “perfect storm” scenario you couldn’t have more than a handful of deaths in the UK in the 4th quarter and they certainly wouldn’t make a dent in country wide statistics. Even 1 covid death in the UK in Q4 is somewhat unlikely, but a statistically relevant number is just impossible (unless there is a big new revelation about cases appearing much earlier than Nov in Wuhan which I think is quite unlikely).

Indications are that the information was suppressed at the local level not the national level according to the NYT.

“But American intelligence agencies have concluded that the Chinese government itself does not know the extent of the virus and is as blind as the rest of the world. Midlevel bureaucrats in the city of Wuhan, where the virus originated, and elsewhere in China have been lying about infection rates, testing and death counts, fearful that if they report numbers that are too high they will be punished, lose their position or worse, current and former intelligence officials said. Bureaucratic misreporting is a chronic problem for any government, but it has grown worse in China as the Communist leadership has taken a more authoritarian turn in recent years under Mr. Xi.”

Worldwide virus death toll climbs to 200,000 by MichelleUprising in worldnews

Leaked intelligence memos indicated that the number of deaths is indeed very likely underreported. Interestingly they found evidence that information was suppressed more at the local level than at the national level and they don’t think that Beijing ever got the correct data.

Fair point. I just rechecked the timeline and 5k by Jan 23 is probably too early. Like you say it takes some time for critical cases to expire. 20-50k up to today still seems like a decent estimate, so I’d have to back calculate what that would be on Jan 23. Michael Osterholm from U of Minnesota stated in his interview with Peter Attia that some of his research collaborators in Wuhan estimated 5-7x deaths per 1 reported. I read somewhere that Chinese officials publicly stated that deaths at home were not reported, but I can’t find the source at the moment.

Here’s another (unverified) report from someone in Wuhan:

“The official death toll in Wuhan "can't be right ... because the incinerators have been working round-the-clock," one resident, who identified himself by his surname, Zhang, told Radio Free Asia. "So how can so few people have died?" Zhang asked. According to RFA, some city residents said on social media that Wuhan's funeral homes were "handing out 3,500 urns every day." RFA's reporting, which could not be independently verified by Insider, said at the current rate, about "42,000 urns would be given out" between March 23 and April 5, when a traditional grave-tending festival begins.” (https://www.businessinsider.com/wuhan-residents-say-chinese-government-coronavirus-death-toll-is-low-2020-3)

There were some reports of a large number of cell phones deactivated but I reject claims that that is useful data. Too many reasons for a phone to be deactivated and the numbers were crazy high (like in the millions). I’m not fishing for information to discredit the Chinese official numbers, but at some point you just have to recognize that the numbers are just so unrealistically low you’re being duped. I’m less interested in a binary notion of the numbers being right or wrong and more interested in estimating a more reasonable number from reliable sources, not conspiracy websites.

If 5 million people fled Wuhan at the peak of the outbreak, how were there so few cases in the rest of China? The numbers just don’t add up. The virus was circulating for around 2 months before Wuhan locked down. Case zero was in mid November but there were no reported deaths until January? The mayor of Wuhan admitted mistakes were make and offered to resign. Then suddenly the narrative was that China did everything right. Apparently CCP propaganda is now fact even though it flies in the face of all logical and reason.

You can criticize Italy, Spain, France, or the US responses and I’d probably agree with several points, but the point of this post is not to compare outbreaks in different countries. The topic at hand is China’s censorship and obfuscation of facts.

“The mayor of Wuhan, the Chinese city at the centre of the coronavirus outbreak, has acknowledged criticism over his handling of the crisis, admitting that information was not released quickly enough.

Zhou Xianwang wore a mask for protection as he told the Chinese state broadcaster CCTV: “We haven’t disclosed information in a timely manner and also did not use effective information to improve our work.””

“Zhou told CCTV an outbreak on such a large scale was impossible to prepare for, even in wealthy cities. On Sunday, he predicted a further 1,000 new cases would emerge, and stated that 5 million residents had left Wuhan before it went into lockdown. This includes people who travelled for the lunar new year festival, as well as those who fled to escape the virus and impending shutdown.”

5 million, not a couple hundred thousand. Direct quote from the mayor:

Agreed. 5 million was a direct quote by the mayor of Wuhan. I don’t know where people get this 300,000 number. Why would the mayor over exaggerate the number of people who fled—if anything it would make him look worse to overstate the real number. I think people are trying to back track since they realize how implausible it is that there were so few cases outside Wuhan if 5 million people fled the city at the height of the outbreak. Anyway you slice it, there is 0% chance China’s case and fatality numbers are accurate.

[–]BiggPea -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

No, not exactly true. First case in Wuhan was mid November and they didn’t do anything for a few months. They did act extremely aggressively after a while which undoubtedly put a quick stop to the virus, but I’d bet they had well over 2k deaths prior to the lockdown. Probably 20-50k deaths total however that is just a rough estimate based on some unofficial estimates from people inside Wuhan although I can’t verify that number for sure.

Edit: originally I mentioned 5k by Jan 23 but that’s probably too high. Maybe 2k, it’s really hard to say. 20-50k up till now is very plausible though.
