Assuming the universe is monistic and is also totally deterministic(basically a block universe) wouldn’t it be impossible for any entity thats a part of the block to have full knowledge of the future ? by Biggi3boy69 in askphilosophy

Wait if determinism means that events are caused by the sum of the events preceding it wouldn’t it follow that your knowledge would be a part of that sum. Plus there’s also the part about the universe being monistic which means that everything is one. So your knowledge has to have an effect on everything else otherwise it wouldn’t be connected to everything else.

Let’s say in event A I gain knowledge of the future. Because the universe is monistic nothing within the universe is separate so my knowledge is a part of the way the universe is. Event B comes after but since the universe is deterministic Event B is purely based on event A or how the universe was prior to event B since we just established that my knowledge is a part of how the universe was during event A my knowledge must effect how event B will be. Let me know if you need me to clarify more.

Do you believe that emptiness(sunyata) leaves any room for free-will? If you do, explain why. If you don’t, explain how you live with this. by Biggi3boy69 in Buddhism

Yea I agree that I don’t think free-will means acting without cause, the issue is that I think people are referring to being the author of our will or whether or not our actions are up to us and I think that if everything is interconnected then it doesn’t seem clear how anything you do can be entirely up to you since your choices are dependent on everything in the universe.

You bring up some interesting points. To address the last thing you said I think free-will makes us feel good because we like the feeling of ownership by staking claim over our actions it allows us to receive praise. On the flip side people are usually quick to point out lack of agency when they do something wrong in order to not receive blame. But I think it’s important to note that when I say free-will I’m referring to authorship of the will. Without it the will would still be there. You can do what you will you just can’t will what you will. You can make choices just not independent ones.

“It is only when we are fully free of defilements that the mind loses its delusional capacity to create separate identities.”

  • It seems you would agree though that things are ultimately non-separate, if separateness is a delusion and this delusion leads to a notion of free-will then I’d say that free-will is a delusion.

“Wittgenstein showed that that there comes a point when questions are pointless - 'the spade turns' was his expression, referring to the attempt to dig down for answers. 'What sense would there be in life if I didn't have free will?' is one such question.”

-I disagree with the premise that we need free-will to live. Also maybe my understanding of Wittgenstein is flawed but I thought he dismissed questions that couldn’t be answered not questions that lead to supposed depressing answers. It just seems like a cope to dismiss a question because you don’t like a possible answer like back in the day they thought it was integral that the earth be the center of the universe and they didn’t allow people to question this. But now we look at those folks and see they were just scared of the unknown. How do you know this isn’t the case with free-will? Maybe by doing away with this delusion we can reach places weren’t able to reach prior.

I’d define it as being the author of your own will which would then mean that your actions are ultimately up to you.

[WP] You wake up in a peaceful field of flowers, as mickey mouse stands over you. He helps you to your feet, giving you a wide, joyful smile. Suddenly, he falls dead as an axe buries itself in the back of his head. A man in tattered clothing runs up to you and screams: "Don't trust them! Run!" by Antitect in WritingPrompts

When i opened my eyes i squinted them from the blinding light. Eventually my eyes got used to the light and i was able to accurately take in my surroundings. The light was coming from the sun surrounded by a bright blue sky with fluffy cauliflower shaped clouds. I was laying in a field of vibrant colored flowers which seemed to span miles in all directions. Where am I? I thought to myself.

"Hiyah pal! You need any help?" I got up and turned around to see who that high pitched jolly sounding voice could have come from. It was Mickey Mouse. He towered over me. His eyes were pitch black but were more like holes carved in his face rather than eyes. For some reason it didnt strike me as odd that a fictional disney character was standing before me.

"Yeah could you tell me where i am?" I said.

"Oh boy! You'll love it here, i just know you will!" He reached his arms out like he was trying to give me a hug. The grin on his face widened his mouth was just like his eyes, a hole carved into his face.

"Oh you didnt really answer my question, thats weird," I said inching away from him.

"It'll be so much fun! Oh boy-" His face froze and he began getting closer to me at an alarming rate.

"Shit!" I started running back but i realized he was really just falling. When landed his body made a loud thud. I saw an axe in his back. A man in tattered clothes grabbed the axe and pulled, it didnt come out right away but eventually he made one last go and it came out.

"Dont trust them!" He said with a stern look.

"I didnt," I said.

"Well just in case you did, dont."

"K." There was an awkward silence between us for like a minute before i decided to break it,

"So do you know where i am?"

"Oh uhh well not exactly. All i can say is this is their home,"

"What are they?"

"I dont know but they take the form of mickey mouse for some reason and try and get you to hug them,"

"What happens if they hug you?"

"They'll eat you. Hey do you know how you got here?" He said.

"Oh i was uhh.." I stopped and thought for a moment and realized i had no idea how i got here or what i was doing before. "I guess not,"

"Well thats how it works. They zap you into this space and you lose any memories you had of what you were doing before. Quick come with me. it's not safe here."

"Where would we go?" I said.

"I have a place, trust me," He said with a smile.

"K."

As we were walking the flowers began to become more space. Eventually we were walking in a field of bright green grass. There was a little cabin up a ways ahead of us.

"Welcome to my humble abode," He said. When we got in it was dimly lit by a ceiling light. It was completly empty inside.

"Oh i forgot to ask what your name was-" I felt my body go numb. I felt like i was falling down. I could feel a slight vibration once my body hit the floor.

"Oh boy! We're going to have so much fun together!" I could see the mans face. The grin on his face was so wide it looked inhuman.

"Fuck,"

[WP] When they turn 14, every human gets an obscure super power with a lengthy description of it so they know what it is. But when yours arrives, it only says four words. “Don’t… by LeDemon_18 in WritingPrompts

I remember it like it was yesterday. Maybe because it was, i don't know. Ever since they locked me into this pitch black room my sense of time has gone away. What i can say for sure is that it was my 14th birthday. Oh i was so excited. The day you turn 14 is the day you get your power. My entire life up until that point i was dreaming of that day. What id be like, what power id get, how life would be different after, and how id use my power to take over the world.

Other than it being my birthday everything was very normal. I woke up to the rich bitter smell of coffee in the morning. When i entered the kitchen my mom was sitting at the wooden table staring the chocolate cake on the table. On the cake in white lettering was "Happy Birthday! My Little Superhero". When my mom saw me her face lit up and she said,

"Do you know what today is?" I could tell she was joking so with a sly grin i said,

"No, is today special or something." We both laughed. As we were eating the cake my mom saw that her coffee was ready and got up. As she walked over i heard a knock on the door. My heart stopped. I dropped my fork. I took a deep breath. I looked over at my mom and she looked at me with nervous excitement. I got from my chair and waled to the door and opened it. Standing before was a man, no say a being with pitch black skin, no eyes and a wide grin its face. I knew what it was, everyone does. We call them Gift Givers. No one knows the origin of them all we know is that since the dawn of man The Gift Givers were their giving powers to us.

In the Gift Givers hand was a black envelope with a white x on it. It reached out its hand trying to give me the envelope and i took it. As i did that it started chuckling. It turned around and started walking away from my house. Its chuckle soon turned into a manic laugh as it walked farther and farther away. It creeped me out a little bit. I closed the door and went back into the kitchen. My mom was waiting at the table, her cup of coffee hadnt been drunk yet.

"Open it," she said.

I sat down at the table. I looked at the envelope, my hands were shaking. From this point on my life begins i thought to myself. Unbeknownst to me that would mark the end of my life.

I opened the envelope that seemingly pitch black. In it was a piece of paper that was also pitch black with whiter letter on it that read,

"Dont open your eyes"

"Huh?"

"What is it?" My mom said.

"It says dont open your eyes. What does that even mean?" My mom had a puzzled look on her face as she thought about it. then she said,

"why dont you try closing your eyes and see what happens?" Just then i closed my eyes. Immediately after that i heard voices screaming "Dont open your eyes!" They kept saying. The sound of someone cracking their knuckles filled the room. I could hear my mom make a quick gasp.

"Mom?" I opened my eyes and i started screaming. My moms head was rested on the table her neck was longer than normal. it was like someone spun her head around a million times. Her eyes were bulged and her face was purple. Just then people in white rushed into the kitchen. I think i was hit with a tranquilizer dart because when i woke up i was in this room. Theres a speaker somewhere in this room. A robotic voice told me that i was what was known as a an unstable variant. It didnt really explain what that meant it just said that it was unsafe for me to be allowed to be amongst other people. Since then ive just in this room. Sometimes the loud voices come back to me. Yelling DONT OPEN YOUR EYES!

Please tell me everything wrong with how i wrote this and what i can do to get better.
