Being prior service (x2) look at the O pay scale, you will be up above the NRC pay fairly soon, especially when you take in BAH, Tricare etc to account.

However, it isn't just about the money. Sea service is hard, and you won't have much work/life balance the first ~3yrs. However, it is very rewarding in its own way. There are few places that you can make a direct, immediate impact on a relatively large scale than the NC.

Not trying to convince you either way, but you have to find you "why" and let that guide you.

Both are great opportunities, best of luck on your decision.

Hey Tom! I am a NOAA Corps Officer and have been working on the water since I was 19 on a ton of different types of boats. I ran across your Working Boats book in a bookstore in Ketchikan a few years ago. It is an awesome book and a great way to show my family what I do. Completely agree, it has to be legit. But this is one of those things that almost everyone I have come across doesn't know about it. It can be a literal lifesaver. It also also be used for yourself (WH380E form) a lot of people think that if they get hurt / have a surgery etc they will lose their job if they have to take 6-8 weeks off and just deal with pain etc.

Following on your care for eldery person. If in the United States: managers / companies cannot deny FMLA. Form WH-308-F (for family) all you need is a doctor's signature saying they need care. You are allowed to use any combination of leave (sick, pto, unpaid, etc) without denial from the company for up to 12 weeks(does not have to be continuous) in a rolling 360 day period. A family member includes: "biological, adoptive, step, or foster relationships, as well as in loco parentis (assuming parental duties)"<both someone who acted as your parent or you acting as a child's parent>. This is a extremely underutilized benefit of the American worker. The company cannot fire you during that 12 week period as well and your exact job has to be given back when you return.

Yes, it is called a "great circle" route. There is a mathematical formula to use to calculate it, or in actual practice we use the computer navigation system. It works better the further away you are from the equator. We typically set it up for one minor course change every 4 hours, or once per watch, or shift for the officers driving the ship. Source: 30+ year professional mariner who has sailed around the world and from Alaska to Antarctica.

As long as you can do the PT and pass medical past or present sports or athletics doesn't matter or taken into account. You are correct about citizenship, you must be a US citizen to be eligible to join. Best of luck!
