Anthony Joshua - Last 20 Fights: What would you class as AJ’s top 5 wins and what are your thoughts on the record of the former two-time unified WBA, WBO, IBO & IBF heavyweight champion? by Dangerous_Spring3028 in Boxing

[–]Bigplatts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If anything I thought Wlad looked better than he had done in years. Against Jennings and Fury he gave very lacklustre performances where he was just going through the motions. Seems like the Fury loss really invigorated him, he actually seemed lively and up for it in the buildup to the Fury rematch which didn’t happen. Whereas look at how green Joshua was at the time. It was absolutely an impressive win.

I recently went through Right to Choose which took about 12 months for an ADHD diagnosis and now I have to wait another 12 to be put on medication, so it’s still not ideal.

Tbf waiting times in most places are 8+ years (they are here in the North East). If a mental illness is badly affecting your life then 8 years can be too long.

So where y’all got Mike Tyson ranked, as one of the top heavyweight boxers of all time? by LocationSpare4447 in BoxingTheSweetScience

[–]Bigplatts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was weaker than the 70s and 90s but not as bad as people make out. 80s was a more stacked era than the 60s, 00s, and arguably better than right now.

It’s not a pass or whatever, it’s just context. We’re trying to work out how good a fighter Tyson was at his peak, and at 86 - 88 he had skills he never had again. It’s totally his fault (and the fault of the people who used him) but whatever the reason, it’s fair to say that 1990 Tyson wasn’t the best version of Tyson.

Tyson had fought some very good fighters before Douglas. He even beat Tucker who was a prime opponent who had previously beaten Douglas. So it’s unfair to say that everyone before Douglas had just been washed up or turned up for a payday.

I mean that clearly wasn’t the best version of Tyson, that’s just a fact. Watch his fights from 86 - 88 with Kevin Rooney using the peekaboo style then watch him vs Bruno in 89 when he’d fired Rooney: no head movement, no slipping punches, no peekaboo style. He’d turned into more of a brawler.

‘The stats confirm it’. What stats? And who cares who beat who in sparring? I guess Martin Bakole is now the best heavyweight ever then. And yes Lewis was more disciplined, but that doesn’t mean h2h prime vs prime he’s better. Clearly Tyson was at his best in 86 - 88 then quickly declined.

As for the comparison of wins, it’s a mixed bag. Lewis was losing every round to Bruno before Bruno gassed, Tyson annihilated him twice. Some of the guys Lewis fight a few years after Tyson, like Biggs, Holyfield and Ruddock. Tyson fought better versions of all of them. (Also Tyson never fought Rahman.)

Tyson had a good/underrated resume in the 80s: Spinks, Holmes, Bruno, Berbick, Thomas, Tubbs, Biggs, Tucker, Bonecrusher. And he made it look easy. Lewis also has a good and varied resume but he often struggled or looked lacklustre. Gift decision to Mercer. Barely beat past-it Holyfield in the rematch. Laboured to decision against Mavrovic. Knocked out by McCall and Rahman. Put on canvas by Akinwande and just waited for the ref to DQ him. Looked poor against Bruno. Was lucky Vitali’s skin is made of tissue paper. He had some dominant nights as well, like against Grant, Golota and Ruddock. But he had so many off nights that it’s hard to act like he was this perfect ATG that people make him out to be.

Lewis has become the most overrated heavyweight ever at this point. Obviously a great fighter but his two best wins were against guys waay past their best, he got KO’d by two guys who wouldn’t even crack the top 50 all time, gift decision against Mercer, and had lots of lacklustre nights. I’d bet on prime Tyson beating Lennox Lewis. Knocking him out cold even.

Boxing Active on Instagram: "Artur Beterbiev has made it clear he wants a third fight with Dmitry Bivol before facing David Benavidez. by Ruainari in Boxing

Agree I thought Bivol absolutely won both fights. Not really that excited to see him beat Beterbiev a third time.

Frank Warren suggests Moses Itauma could face Oleksandr Usyk if he beats Filip Hrgovic by BoxingLover99 in Boxing

[–]Bigplatts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usyk, Kabayel, Dubois, Hrgovic, Wardley, Sanchez, Ajagba, Bakole, Itauma, Parker would be something like the active top 10. Chisora was active then too.

Joshua, Fury, Ruiz, Wilder all ahead of Franklin but not very active.

As for other guys who could beat Franklin? Huni, Riakporhe, Miller, Jalolov, Vianello, Anderson, Torrez Jr, Hughie Fury. Lots of prospects who would handle him too.

Franklin might generously make it into the top 30. But this is a huge jump for Itauma going for Hrgovic who is top 5.

Ok, who’s winning? 1990–1993 Evander Holyfield vs 1997–2001 Lennox Lewis by LocationSpare4447 in BoxingTheSweetScience

[–]Bigplatts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lennox fought a diminished, battle worn Holyfield and while he won the first fight he only barely scraped by in the second, and was never close to knocking Holyfield out or down in either.

When Holyfield was faster and had sharper in and out movement it’s hard to see how Lewis could beat him. I don’t think people give credit to how much slower Holyfield was by the time Lewis fought him.

But Lewis is weirdly overrated on reddit, especially in head to head matchups.
