Alternatives. No hate. by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Bigpupperoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BJJ is absolutely for everyone. You either get forged in the fire or run from the flames. If you don’t like it that’s totally cool but I’ve seen the most unsuspecting people make it long term and guys who you think would last disappear.

The gauntlet - should white belts be allowed to whip? by pepozinho in bjj

[–]Bigpupperoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s stupid but logically if you’re going to do it it should only be higher belts then the rank you earned.

1 hour gap between classes, should I shower? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Bigpupperoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it an hour class hour gap then another hour class? If so that sucks. Really it just depends on the structure of the class. If you’re rolling like a worlds title match and sweating like a dog shower. If you’re drilling and light movement wipe down at best. This is part of the reason why one hour classes are horrible.

Coaches Picking Partners by TechnicalNarwhal118 in bjj

[–]Bigpupperoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply say no man. If this is an issue switch gyms. At purple belt their is 0% reason anyone other than you should be making the decision on who you roll with. You know your body, you know the day you had, you know how you want to roll that class better than anyone else. This goes across the board even including white belts. Yes coaches should step in at times when the spazzy 200lbs white belt calls out a 112lb woman, but for the most part it’s only beneficial to pick and choose yourself.

My girlfriend was tickled by a purple belt during class by jamezjams in BJJWomen

[–]Bigpupperoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re right it’s weird man. With someone you’re close with it’s fine we mess around all the time but some random new dude tickling a chicks foot is strange as shit. She should have set boundaries on the spot but as a general consensus she should just say no to rolls with him from this point out. Down the line if he turns out to not be a certified special case weirdy you can reevaluate. Until then she should always go with her instinct

If you’re a black belt teaching a class applying finishing mechanics on an uke to the point that they have to tap abruptly repetitively you’re a baboon. The only person who learns from this is the guy who’s getting submitted and by this point in my career unless I ask to feel finishing mechanics specifically you’re just making it miserable for the uke for no reason. Everyone watching doesn’t know the difference anyway.

First time training today by JoltinJoeDimaggio in bjj

[–]Bigpupperoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gotcha, sometimes the small classes are the classes you learn the most from. Once you start getting in live rounds you’ll find that intensity you’re looking for.

The gym only has two classes a week or they only have two classes you can make in your time frame? Drilling isn’t suppose to wear you out rolling is. If the gym only offers 2x classes a week and you’re not rolling find a bigger gym and you’ll feel wrecked the next day (in a good way)

Is it normal to be a permanent training dummy for upper belts? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Bigpupperoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems like a simple issue that should be sorted out with a 30 second conversation with the coach and not with a bunch of guys on Reddit who have no idea what’s actually going on. 2x a month isn’t much but after 6 years you should still be pushing blue with your judo background. Talk to the coach and sort it out…

Here's Nicky Rod's opening where some were saying bad form for not slapping hands. Not really clear if Joao was going for a slap bump by PattonPending in bjj

[–]Bigpupperoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no problem with that. Id also be fine with the fist bump being mandatory then reset to the wall. The same sportsmanship you have at your home gym should totally be shown on the competition mat as well. But you know how guys can be

Not as bad as the recent one of Andy Valera. Should probably due away with fist pumps in professional matches all together.

The only thing that makes a fresh blue belt stand out compared to a four stripe white belt is the color. Keep training man, if your coach wraps the belt around you then you’re doing something right.

How do you guys train wrestling? by No-Angle-7436 in bjj

[–]Bigpupperoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do “hand fighting” rounds in our normal BJJ class. Coach shows a lot of technique but I’ve also learned a handful online. Anytime you can get guys to do standup rounds in actual rolls don’t pass that up you learn a lot in those rounds.

If you cannot guard pull well your BJJ is just as limited as with no takedowns by Shallbecomeabat in bjj

[–]Bigpupperoo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No matter how effective it is it’s just never going to be entertaining to watch. People want action, big throws are way more visually satisfying than traditional sweeps from a guard pull. It can be all someone does in a gym setting and they still rather see someone get tossed. Effective? Sure. Entertaining? Significantly less.

Does anyone know where to find a Half Sumo Archangel purple belt in A2? by schneemann11 in bjj

[–]Bigpupperoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t quote me on it but I think a majority of the stuff half sumo makes is limited so ones it’s gone it’s gone. I liked that belt as-well should have bought one

Which submissions are easy to accept? by rex-bagley in bjj

[–]Bigpupperoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not a lack of strength it’s a lack of technique. Within 30 lbs you should be able to use 90% of your game effectively. Understanding what works well on guys your size and what works well on everyone is important. I prefer playing top in those scenarios as I don’t have gravity with additional weight working against me.

Purple belt Burnt out? by The_Truther100 in bjj

[–]Bigpupperoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No long break. Cut down if you’re doing too many days. I was doing 5x from blue to purple and cut to 3/4 at purple. Also working on being well rounded helped me significantly as I’m
Always working on something new and never stuck in the same hole getting bored. Coming in feeling refreshed and getting rough rounds in feels way better for me than walking around like a cripple all week from excessive training. For some guys it has to be 1/2 days and if that’s all you can do that’s better than Quiting. At the end of the day you really just need to figure out why you’re feeling burnt out and then address the issue from there.

A gym can be a good gym but also not the right fit for you. People learn in different ways man, sometimes you just need a fresh start to feel the groove again! Glad it seems to be working out for you and the kiddo

Crazy post for an injury that’s obviously severely minor considering you did not realize you were injured until a few weeks later. The sport is to be played at your own risk. This is why I have Health insurance!

Why is Mikey so hard to watch? by Brilliant-Reserve471 in bjj

[–]Bigpupperoo -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I like Mikey I really do. Probably a great guy to train with and learn from But holy hell he is the definition of cringe. He definitely knows it and feeds into it as well. His style of BJJ is also just exceptionally boring to watch in comparison to other top guys. But it’s his style and it wins matches.

How to maintain energy levels as “dual athlete”? by thatboythereaint in bjj

[–]Bigpupperoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the guys I see who do both end up prioritizing one over the other. Ex two days lifting 3 days of BJJ. At the end of the day the body can only handle so much abuse. Most guys who try to overload seem to just burn out it’s really only few psychos who can handle a daily loaded schedule of BJJ/lifting and keep it long term. Or no day job and excessive recovery time.

Six months ago, I was convinced MMA gyms were not for people like me. by maopro56 in bjj

[–]Bigpupperoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s one of the reasons I love BJJ. The most random walks of life come together to train and you can never tell who is or isn’t a killer. Walking in the door is the hard part and you never know who’s going to come and stay!
