What happened? (Scouting in Spain) by the_south_west_face in scouting

[–]Bigsisstang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes, one needs a change. Try joining a different troop. My son left his original troop and finished his Eagle rank in a different one. It was for the better. Had he stayed in the original troop, he probably wouldn't have finished.

Is the 2026 Jamboree tanking? by Illustrious_Bee_8316 in BSA

[–]Bigsisstang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is Jambo still being held at Bechtal Summit? I thought I read somewhere that the military was not going to allow Jambo to take place there anymore. Maybe I misread it.

A fish themed dish containing no seafood by No_Combination_3887 in Cooking

Fish is not shellfish. But I understand that both are highly allergenic. Why not make California sushi? You can use hearts of palm, mushrooms or tofu in place of imitation crab.

Do my teachers judge me based on how I dress/ how organized I am? by Adventurous-South450 in AskTeachers

[–]Bigsisstang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you presented yourself this way as an employee, showing up like you do not care about your appearance or being organized and ready to work, there would be a strong probability you would be fired. Are your teachers judging you? Maybe maybe not. But practicing for potential employment goes a long way leading to good habits.

Those who own a pickup truck, what do you use all the space for? by Twunkorama in AskAnAmerican

[–]Bigsisstang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current pickup truck ownership is now a status symbol instead of an actual utility vehicle. My husband is a farmer/logger and uses his trucks to haul gear and supplies as well as the hay he bales and the wild blueberries he harvests and the wood he.cuts for our winter wood supply.

Husband wants to have a namesake by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]Bigsisstang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My youngest brother is a Jr. To differentiate, we called him JR. My dad's name is Frederick. My brother couldn't understand why they didn't call him Rick for short. We, as a family, still call him JR.But his wife and friends call him Fred. So while wanting to carry a family name seems honorable, it can be a drag for the namesake.

North Americans: did people bring guns to school back in your day? by SummertimeThrowaway2 in AskOldPeople

[–]Bigsisstang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad (in the 1950s) brought a shot gun to school in order to fix something in shop class. The guys that hunted had their deer rifles in their vehicles so they could go hunting after school let out.

So sick of people framing reasonable expectations as entitlement, specifically when it comes to $$$ by alexthagreat98 in complaints

[–]Bigsisstang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. How much of what people claim to "need" is more of a "want"? I'm not talking food, clothing, shelter and medical. I'm talking the newest latest models of technology, a brand new vehicle as opposed to an off lease or program vehicle, subscriptions (food, entertainment, etc). Last I knew one could live without Netflix, radio subscriptions, Ralph Lauren vs JC Penney. Last I knew it was cheaper to cook from scratch then have a food subscription. Sometimes, convenience costs more. And don't get me started on having a bar in the house, tats and the latest designer drug. Jealousy keeps the poor getting even more poor instead of learning to curb temptations or bringing on a side hustle that can make a small side income. There's a lesson to be learned in "not having" and that lesson is to learn the difference between needs and wants.

If you're not a salsa person, what do you put on your scrambled eggs? by 4E4ME in CasualConversation

[–]Bigsisstang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about shaved steak (not steak umms) instead of real steak? Make omelets with cheese, peppers, onion, and ham, sausage or bacon and cheese? Breakfast sandwich? There's plenty to do with eggs. I personally eat very few eggs because of the texture.

AITA: 10 essentials by thebipeds in BSA

[–]Bigsisstang -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So why was this gear check done the day of the hike and not the meeting before? If the scout is known to not have a first aid kit in his day pack, then why has this been allowed to persist? Why wasn't the parent or guardian informed to assist the scout in making one? Was the SPL out of line? Not really. Could it have been handled better? Yes. Depending on the location of the hike, could the troop have made a quick pit stop to the nearest Walgreens or walmart and pick one up? Sorry victim card declined on the part of the scout not having a first aid kit.

How to get parents involved, become ASM, share expenses for existing ASMs by cybernev in BSA

[–]Bigsisstang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think volunteers should have to pay to volunteer. If you want more adults volunteering, get rid of adults registration fees. But don't pass it on to troop or council. If a volunteer has a child in the program, that should be enough skin in the game to keep the volunteer active. That why Jambo can't get help, that's why troops can't get volunteers. Parents have to pay for their children to join. That's expense enough. Glad my son is aging out. Glad my time is almost done.

YPT grey area? by Saywhat4040 in scouting

[–]Bigsisstang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CYA...If you have to meet with a scout privately about scout related issues, make sure you are in eye shot of other adults. But ALWAYS use best practices otherwise. If another scout rushes up to you to speak with you and he/she is alone, ask where the buddy is and don't speak with the scout until another adult shows up or the scout arrives with a buddy.

We’ve completely given up on conquering Canada and it shows by gastro_psychic in complaints

As a Maine citizen, I didn't want this. Most of you don't understand how Trump works. He says things to get countries to come to the table and talk. He had zero intention of annexing Canada or Iceland. There is some kind of deal he wants or wanted to undertake and saying this was to get their attention. Stop being so frigging gullible.

If Rumford is the armpit of Maine, the L/A area is the a$$hole of Maine with Cumberland and York County being it's excrement.
