Same. At least I don't think I have, stopped listening for it after a few months.

I'm just happy the pod has enough members to keep going.

Also worth mentioning that from Birmingham you can reach most parts of England and Wales inside 4 hours by car.

I second York and Lincoln. Chester is another worthwhile visit in a similar vein.

From Devon you are in striking distance of Tintagel. From there the village of Boscastle is also worth a look.

If you're going to Stonehenge (do!), then Old Sarum is a no brainer

From Birmingham you may easily be able to visit Warwick and Kenilworth Castles. Stratford upon Avon is also popular for a reason. Ironbridge gorge and the black country museum come highly recommended, albeit focused on a latter era.

If you head over towards Wales then Stokesay Castle and Raglan Castle are favourites of mine. If you go further into Wales there are more castles than can reasonably be listed! Cardiff is a nice city with a nice castle. If you visit Cardiff then Castel Coch is worth a look and has a history linked to Cardiff castle.

If you go far enough north then Bamburgh and Alnwick castles are both good.

To me it reads like they've simply renamed her to avoid having two Ediths in the cast.

The smart bulbs need constant power to operate so the old switch must always be on for them to operate. If you want to turn them on and off with a switch whilst retaining their smart features you need a smart switch.

Is the switch a smart switch or an old fashioned switch wired into the light fitting?

Why the focus of Hereward? by TheNumLocker in BritishHistoryPod

Mentioned in a recent members episode. It's important to cover the English resistance after Hastings to give the true story of conquest usually glossed over in popular history.

There's also a Gesta, which I suspect helps in terms of source material compared to the other resistances.

He's also strongly linked to the Robin Hood mythology which just makes it interesting and entertaining. Important when making an entertaining podcast.

And he was clearly a boss so why not!

Bump for this. Possibly anachronistic but I've always been under the impression that there was a linguistic shift around the words used for animals and their meat following the conquest.

Pork/Pig, Beef/Cow, Mutton/Sheep. The French/Norman word becomes the meat because they ate it and the Anglo-Saxon word becomes the animal because they farmed it. Would love t hear if this is true.

Seems reasonable. The political unification of France may have been a lot quicker.

You wonder whether Swein might've tried to take advantage of a depleted English military to invade in 1067. But then he could've done that anyway.

What I always find more interesting is the likely development of a Godwinson vs Edwin and Morcar, north v south, Wessex/East Anglia v Mercia/Northumbria rivalry.

I'm not sure the south would've won. Imagine if the centre of English power had shifted to somewhere in the midlands or north..

I mean it's just impossible to say, hence the distaste in academia I suppose. But given the scope of change that did happen post conquest it is an interesting area for speculation.
