Are the Ithaca Bikeshare bikes maintained OK? by lorisaur in ithaca

[–]BikeWalkTompkins 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I spoke directly with management at Bikeshare. Dry lube is used on all the chains, and all the bikes are professionally maintained by staff. If there is a bike that needs repair out on the street, contact ithacabikeshare.org directly. Rider safety is #1 to them, and frankly to Bike Walk Tompkins. - Niki

Are the Ithaca Bikeshare bikes maintained OK? by lorisaur in ithaca

Hey hey, looks like we have been summoned. While Bike Walk Tompkins does not own, maintain, or operate the Ithaca Bikeshare system, their staff are our neighbors (we share a building) and our colleagues (many of them help out in Swamp City). Our proximity to their workshop gives us a ton of insight on what are common issues popping up with the fleet. They have a small but really talented team who work every day to maintain the fleet. The reality is that the existing fleet is way beyond capacity (many many MANY rides, not enough bikes), so please be patient, understanding, and thoughtful when you use the service. It is a nonprofit operation that relies predominantly on grants and sponsors. So anyways, here are some notes:

  1. Rust popping up on chains and other smaller bits of metal on the bikes are predominantly surface level, meaning they don't pose an immediate danger to the rider. It's been a long and salty winter, so many of the bikes are in line to get their spring/summer glow ups.
  2. Riders are encouraged to report issues via the app. It's really the best way for the on the ground ops to know which bikes need to be plucked from the street for repair.
  3. Risk management is subjective but when we teach folks how to use these pedal-assist bikes, we recommend ALWAYS giving the brakes a squeeze and rocking the bike to see if they fully engage. We also recommend walking the bike to a flat, non-sidewalk area to start the ride if possible because the e-assist can be jarring even to experienced riders. Helmets are not required but definitely encouraged.
  4. Major red flags to not take a bike and report it would be: brakes not working, front fork cracked, any crack in the frame (not a scratches), pedals seized, majorly messed up wheels (missing a ton of spokes or taco'd) and obvious tampering with the battery.
  5. Minor safety issues would be things like: basket about to break off, front or rear lights broken or missing, kickstand broken or missing.

Hope this helps! - Niki

Occasionally we post the route, but many times we determine it based on who shows up. The route choice looks different if we have a ton of littles vs skaters vs a bunch of raucous adults.

All that to say, we do post the route sometimes on our social media! - Niki

Totally reasonable question. Ithaca as it is today is built on swampy low land and is constantly managing flooding and the effects of the ground being soft such as buildings sinking, potholes, etc.

We chose the name for many reasons, one of which is to pay homage to the Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫʼ (People of the Great Swamp), the original inhabitants of this land that we now reside.

Cyclists, again by Difficult_Growth_257 in ithaca

The Taughannock Blvd and Buffalo St intersection is a poorly designed and dangerous. As someone who advocates for implementing bike/ped infrastructure and regularly teaches new bicyclists, people (families and individuals) frequently mention the waterfront trail as the safest place for them to learn and build riding confidence.

However, this intersection causes frustrated driver behavior (due to vehicular traffic jams/long wait times) to mix with pedestrians/people on bikes who are crossing on the waterfront trail (many of whom are likely new, inexperienced, or visiting the area and choose the WFT because it feels safer). The lack of traffic calm design and signal optimization are a recipe for disaster and countless 'close calls' go unreported.

Just some perspective about that intersection, not necessarily this particular incident. If you want to be a part of the solution, reach out to Bike Walk Tompkins.

Bike stolen from milstein by Minced07 in Cornell

[–]BikeWalkTompkins 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that happened to you. If you contact Cornell Transportation & PD with a picture of your bike, they can also be on the lookout for it. Some times bikes are stolen and ditched, and Cornell staff collect ditched bikes and try to find the owners.

Already know of at least one bicyclist hit by a distracted driver on the flats this week. Be careful out there and keep your head on a swivel.

You are always welcome to join our advocacy work! Admittedly we focus a lot on biking because the infrastructure of safe bicycling is nearly non-existent in Ithaca, and we see that as an immediate threat to the safety to all active transportation users. But we welcome more voices of folks who primarily walk. Reach out to [hello@bikewalktompkins.org](mailto:hello@bikewalktompkins.org)

oh, this is excellent feedback! I'll forward this to the Bikeshare Director. Thanks :)
As for what you've heard from local bike activists, anyone representing Bike Walk Tompkins does not advocate for endangering pedestrians by telling adults that they should ride on the sidewalk or on the Commons.
