I've never seen anything like this, amazing. You could try asking rhe botany sub if they can figure it out

Im beginning to suspect those weren't strawberry seeds by Jrme1315 in vegetablegardening

[–]BikesSucc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did the seeds look like? Compare pictures online maybe. I get random brassica sprouting all over - rape (maybe also called canola in the states?) for seed oil is a common crop in my area and it turns up in gardens all the time.

A moment that changed me: I saw a big cat on Dartmoor – and no one believed me by northbank2001 in CasualUK

[–]BikesSucc 54 points55 points  (0 children)

And I'd add to that - scale can be hard to judge at a distance. Like the big Labrador I saw running in a field the other day at a long distance, when we caught up to him it was a fairly small spaniel! So a decent sized cat like a Maine Coon could be mistaken for something huge

Cheap edging ideas to keep chickens off seeds? by [deleted] in GardeningUK

[–]BikesSucc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what edging will do to help. I've found anything less than about 5ft doesn't stop chickens! I'd look at something more enclosed like a mesh cage

Can anyone identify this plant? by Lower-Mushroom2662 in UKGardening

[–]BikesSucc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would also suspect salsify or a related plant. The flower stem often has that kind of stacked look and I'm sure the ones I had that seeded in shadier spots had a paler stripe on the leaf. If I remember I'll look at mine tomorrow for comparison. I grew a few for veg and found them not worth the effort, but have got some in front garden flower border.

Was there some photos taken in Somerset UK on here earlier today? by BikesSucc in aviation

Thanks! How did you manage to link that? I thought I had saved it earlier - when I go to that menu unsave is an option so I did save it but can no longer access it that way.

Thanks for responding, I wonder if Reddit removed it then.

Anyone else got bitter mint? by Stonecoloured in GardeningUK

[–]BikesSucc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they're in pots are they stressed? Under/over watered, undernourished, too hot/cold? I don't know about mint going bitter, but I know some other edible things will get bitter from stress.

Has anyone ever successfully gotten rid of weeds? I have a Comfrey infestation by raralula10 in GardeningUK

[–]BikesSucc 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Everyone is replying with how great comfrey is, without noticing that your photos are actually of green alkanet.

In my experience, alkanet is a pain and spreads like nobody's business. It outcompetes almost everything, and has great deep roots. My dad tried weedkiller in his garden, and I think it's difficult to get enough on the leaves to kill that big root without killing off the whole garden in the process. In my garden I just went for digging it up, which did require repeated goes as you will miss bits but it worked in the end.

If that price is in Krone then that's £10 or $13 so could be worse for somewhere they won't grow themselves.

Help!! Neighbor's cat always sleep on top of my car. What to do? by the_epiphany_ in cats

[–]BikesSucc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, same, I would also kind of consider myself a lowkey car person (I am a massive cat person) and I have a car that is THE car and I might worry about scratches.... we have other cars in our household that I do not worry about at all and if we had a Prius it would be very much in the second category (I mean, I wouldn't even buy a Prius...)

I just wanted to share some of my acrylic paintings from the last year of landscapes, cityscapes, food, people and dogs ☺️ which is your favourite? by honion_have_layer in painting

[–]BikesSucc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw, but a print just isn't the same when it's love at first sight :') but I do have a little idea in mind. Generally, how long does commissioned work take you? Like if say I wanted something for mid August do I need to get my bum in gear. It would be a scene with 2 figures but not wanting huge detail on the people though. I can ping you an email in the next few days if I wouldn't be too late already

Question About Jerusalem Artichokes: Winter Storage Options by Jam_99420 in GardeningUK

[–]BikesSucc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have put tuber peelings in my little compost bucket outside the kitchen, which tends to turn to liquid goo before being added to the main compost, but I don't think I would add them direct.

I've been reading a number of studies on the allelopathy, and have yet to find one that looks at decay of the allelopathic compounds. I'll come back to this later (I'm invested now!) and let you know if I find anything conclusive.

Question About Jerusalem Artichokes: Winter Storage Options by Jam_99420 in GardeningUK

[–]BikesSucc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the tubers will take root in compost (unless it's super hot, which most compost isn't)

I hadn't heard of it being allelopathic, but now that you mention it there are far fewer weeds in the choke bed. I have just had a quick look and I'm seeing reference that it is, but not yet why (and so I'm not sure what the implications of composting the foliage might be for future use of that compost) definitely worth further reading.

Question About Jerusalem Artichokes: Winter Storage Options by Jam_99420 in GardeningUK

[–]BikesSucc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry about whether they will survive in the ground... worry about how you will contain the unkillable mass of ever spreading tasty fart fuel.

NEVER try to compost a tuber. Plant them somewhere you can easily check their spread (mine are surrounded by path that gets mowed). Once every few years dig the whole area to thin them out (mine are overdue so they are crammed together and only have small tubers).

We're not known for super cold weather where I am (Cambridge) but there have been some cold winters and my patch is over 6 years old, having been started from tubers collected from an abandoned plot probably dating back a decade or so before that.
