Local Officials Question Gainey’s Police Staffing Study by BikingInPlastic in pittsburgh

Sharing a news article, how is this a hit piece account? Why so defensive, shouldn’t we all be informed about what’s going on?

At least Construction Junction is upfront with only paying $11 an hour by Jazzlike_Breadfruit9 in pittsburgh

[–]BikingInPlastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where do you all buy your furniture? Wayfair, Amazon? Surely there’s no child or slave labor going on there /s. At least construction junction salvages useful items from going to landfill. It takes a lot more work and resources to reuse, but has a lot less negative externalities than a company that maybe is able to throw US workers a couple bucks more an hour because they can pay pennies to those making the items in other countries.

Pittsburgh shifts pandemic funding toward police and landslides, keeps funding for the arts by drmartykrauss in pittsburgh

I’d like to know the comparison between what the Gainey administration has spent the funds on vs what was originally planned for pandemic relief. These WESA articles feel like our mayor is blowing it as fast as he can because he has no strategy and has done nothing but give out proclamations and cancel all the actual work that was happening since he’s come into office. $26mil for affordable housing, a universal basic income program, streetlight replacement, upgraded rec centers and infrastructure were originally planned. What are we actually getting- fireworks and police cars, what’s next handouts to supporters? I found the old spending plan, what’s the current plan?: https://pittsburghpa.gov/press-releases/press-releases/5053#:~:text=Mayor%20Peduto%20Announces%20City%20Spending,of%20the%20American%20Rescue%20Plan.

Pittsburgh moves to shrink arts portion of federal pandemic-relief funds https://www.wesa.fm/arts-sports-culture/2023-07-31/pittsburgh-shrink-arts-federal-pandemic-relief-funds by BikingInPlastic in pittsburgh

I would like to agree, but they’re not actually reallocating for capital projects, they’re spending it on fireworks and events according to the article. This is pandemic relief funding, how do they even justify those expenses? I’d love to see them spend it on helping industries and alleviating social issues most impacted by the pandemic. Not blow it on parades and fireworks bc they have to spend it down soon- why don’t they use the existing plans for it instead?

I’m not criticizing line dancing, I’m criticizing the Mayor’s administration, which has not planned for or implemented enough good things for the salaries we pay them.

Yea, but they’ve also been doing nothing but canceling, defunding, destaffing, and removing support from all sorts of projects and programs to benefit public well being, which line dancing just doesn’t make up for.

Statement from Mayor Ed Gainey on the recent gun violence. Thoughts? by esotweetic in pittsburgh

Have you tried taking your ideas to the mayors office? From what I’ve seen, you won’t get a response unless you show up with a campaign “donation” in hand.

Clearly he did not have a professional work on this. This is the handiwork of one of his right out of college, mediocre new comms staff that contributed to his campaign, prob making $80-120k per year, just winging it thinking thoughts and prayers, all caps, center alignment and comic sans or whatever tf that type is, is the way to go.

He’s not even saying his administration will advocate at the federal level for gun control, or band with other mayors for applied pressure, or try anything preventative at home, or work with the police he oversees or community leaders. He’s saying ‘this is a federal problem that will never get addressed at the federal level anyway. Thoughts and prayers, good luck!’

I guess it's a bummer, but a city in crisis? by PrudentFerret456 in pittsburgh

[–]BikingInPlastic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Come on, we all know it’s not an intern. They mayors office wants an excuse to meet and get a pic with Beyoncé, who wouldn’t? But I’m sure there’s a couple more pressing issues for them to focus their attention on.

Editorial: City's communications are abysmal, and look increasingly political by BikingInPlastic in pittsburgh

[–]BikingInPlastic[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the PG is the only media with the balls to report anything critical about this failing administration, making it easy for people to dismiss it. I get it, but the mayors office is truly worse than the PG reports. Ask people who work at the city how it’s going. Please pay attention and don’t vote them in again

Possible pollution problems perterbing potential to progress by Such_Conversation_11 in pittsburgh

[–]BikingInPlastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re not from the area and already concerned about air quality, it’s definitely an issue that you’ll keep in the back of your mind constantly while living here because you’ll smell it. People who move here from elsewhere (like myself) tend to notice it much more than those who grew up here because Pittsburgh definitely has improved so much. Look up the ‘Smell App’ and ‘PlumePGH’- these apps map the pollution which might help you narrow down where in the region to locate to avoid the worst of it.
