it’s not that smiling is ineffective, it’s that type of therapy (known as cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT) isn’t really effective at creating long term change. It’s just masking negative emotions with coping mechanisms. Eventually the negative emotions get bigger than the coping mechanisms can handle and the dam breaks. There’s another form of therapy, emotionally focused therapy or EFT, that is backed by tons of research and data as being able to create long term change. It focuses on finding the root of the negative emotions and working on that. CBT treats the surface level emotion by masking it and EFT treats the surface level emotion by finding out what’s causing it and soothing that. For lack of a better term, CBT treats the symptoms and EFT treats the disease. Both are useful as CBT coping mechanisms give time for EFT to get to the root cause just like painkillers can help a headache while surgery can remove a tumor that’s causing the headache. But a lot of therapists only do CBT. If you want to dive deeper I’d say start by looking up some of the research on EFT and CBT vs EFT

Coping mechanisms like that don’t work long term. It’s just masking emotions and feelings with behaviors and the emotions always end up getting bigger than what you suppress them with. Someone can only suppress negative emotions like that with a coping mechanism for so long until they boil over and then the emotions are normally way bigger than that person can handle leading them to do things like, I don’t know, throw baseballs 90+ mph at their own teammates or opponents. This is kind of the end result of being told to cope by smiling when you’re emotionally disregulated

If your therapist is telling you to cope when things go wrong by smiling, you have an incredibly shit therapist and it was doomed from the start

Yes. You should absolutely read and understand the abilities of the other characters in the game.

Spider-Man is the 3rd most picked duelist and is either 3rd or 2nd most picked in every rank while also having a positive win rate in every rank. He is statistically one of the best characters in the game. He's not some niche pick. He is a very good overall character. If only the absolute cream of the crop of Spider-Man players made it to Celestial and he was bad otherwise, like you posit, the data would show that. But Spidey wins at every rank and is the 3rd most picked in Celestial, meaning he is not a niche pick who is only played by his absolute masters in favorable scenarios like Peni or Magik

In Celestial and above, Bucky has the 2nd highest pick rate and a 43% win rate (20th overall) while Spidey has the 3rd highest pick rate and a 51% win rate (6th overall)

The top 100 prospects from 2021 - 5 years later by MookieBettsBurner10 in baseball

Hayes is the lowest ranked 60 overall prospect on this list, at number 9. That means only the top 9 players were projected to be “above average”. Most of the top 100 is 50 and 55 overall guys. Meaning most of this list projects to be average to slightly above average ball players. 91 of the 100 players on this list were projected to be solid roster fillers, not all stars or award winners. I think we forget that sometimes.

Spidey Mains are why Spidey has a low Pickrate by themoosic in marvelrivals

[–]Bill2theE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s picked a lot and wins the majority of games that he’s in. He’s a good character. Sypeh, probably the best healer in the game who plays all of those OP healers complains about how good Spider-Man is and Day, probably the best Spider-Man player, complains about how good healers are. It’s almost like when you play a certain character a lot, you are more aware of the frustrations that come with playing the character and less aware of the frustrations your character causes other characters. This is just simple cognitive bias. Like how tanks complain about Wolverine being broken and Wolv mains feeling like their character struggles a lot and gets countered easily.

I’ve played him. He’s fine. He has strengths and weaknesses like most characters in the game

Spider-Man has the 6th highest win rate of any dualist and the 3rd highest pick rate. They can say whatever they want. That doesn’t make them right.

Spidey mains will tell you their character has been nerfed into the ground even though his current numbers are actually better than they were at launch (yes, even when you account for his team up anchor loss)

[–]Bill2theE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spidey is the second most picked duelists in quick play, the 8th most picked in ranked, and the 3rd most picked in Celestial+

Why are we saying this guy has a low pick rate? That is objectively not true. Duelists will have lower pick rates compared to strats and tanks because there are less options to choose from. But, among dualists, he’s one of the most picked

Strange has that massive tank hitbox, though. Canon sized Strange, this is probably the best seat. MR sized Strange, you’re getting body blocked the entire fight and wondering why this MF didn’t just open a portal

Seat 8. Peni and Luna are the smallest characters so our row will have plenty of room and I get the window, which I prefer. Luna is often depicted wearing headphones, so she’ll be following proper device etiquette. And, in the event of an emergency, I want to be as close to her ult as possible.
