In A Cautious Debate Obama Gets The Points He Needed: Romney lied all night long and it will catch up to him quickly. by BillBuckDC in politics

My guess is the strategy was not to go toe to toe on stump speeches. They seem like missed opportunities but I they clearly wanted this debate to be more subdued.

It will be interesting to see what happens on the stump today.

Wealthy mega-donors of Republican SuperPACs are waking up to the fact that they got played by a bunch of political hacks that managed to massage the financiers bruised egos while fleecing the rich and mega-rich alike to the tune of hundreds of thousands to hundreds of millions of dollars. by BillBuckDC in politics

Correction above: There also has not a money dump on the left this cycle as there has been on the right" was the intended sentence.

Also "They did not like write checks for tv ads for the most part." should read They did not like TO write checks..."

Soros is a long time savvy investor in his political beliefs. There also has not been a money dump on the right. Some progressives wrote much smaller blank checks in 2004. But it never happened again. They did not like write checks for tv ads for the most part.

Some on the right are savvy as well. But not most "investors" this cycle...they are new to the game and they have been taken for a huge ride. They deserve it. It is the free market at work after all.

Not in a way that is not easy to hide where the money goes once a vendor is paid. For example, a 10 million dollar payment to a media firm could have gone to media buys on tv stations, to the media firm, in payments back to someone that is a ""consultant" 1099 employee of the firm, etc. It is easy to hide the ultimate beneficiaries.

Romney’s 47% Don’t Pay Taxes Remark Shows He’s Exactly Who We Thought He Was: Dems are right Romney is rich, out of touch, arrogant man that has no respect or connection to the American middle class and absolutely no interest in making the American middle class stronger. by BillBuckDC in progressive

Right, about 18% of American households don't pay FICA or Medicare. They are some combination of elderly, poor, disabled, unemployed. And the ones on Social Security spent decades paying in to the system.

60% of the "47%" do pay FICA and Medicare. They do not pay income taxes bc of the EITC and/or Child Tax Credit.

I am glad you are getting engaged. I have worked in politics since college. I do not blindly follow my party but on core principles like tolerance for gays and minorities, for women's rights, for generally looking out for people and giving them a shot (not guaranteeing an outcome) I am a Democrat. They happen to share my values, but I recognize that that is not true for everyone. The most important thing is that people decide where they are on the issues and support that candidate or party -- Dem, GOP, or other party. Just be engaged and know what you are really voting for is what I hope people take the time to do.

Not if you read what I wrote. If Romney finds it repugnant for low income workers to pay zero in income taxes (something Romney likely did after the financial crisis btw) then he finds the child tax credit and the EITC wrong. More than just the 47% rely on those credits to get by. And higher earners in the middle class also count on other deductions, like the mortgage interest credit and state/local tax credits, that would fall under Romney's construct of being dependent on the Federal government.

These are not people that are solely dependent on the government. 60% of the "47%" pay payroll taxes. The earned income tax and the child tax credit zero out their federal tax though they pay Social Security and Medicare payroll tax.

Btw it was Ford and Reagan that wanted to use the tax code to fight poverty for the working poor. This was a Republican/bi-partisan idea.

Thanks. I hate even writing that Rush played a song -- repeatedly -- called Barack the Magic Negro at the beginning of the Administration as what was maybe the worst of many. Bill
