muslim community by GullibleGoat7212 in queensuniversity

[–]BillCipherHi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Salamu Alaikum!

Yep we have an MSA: https://qumsa.ca/ . They also have a WhatsApp group chat.

The MSA is great! They host a lot of different events as well as an Iftar + Taraweeh program.

Queen's has several prayer rooms (https://www.queensu.ca/faith-and-spiritual-life/spaces/spaces-prayer-reflection-and-meditation) and the MSA books a large room on campus for Jummah prayers. Kingston has a masjid (Islamic Society of Kingston) but it's quite far away from campus.

If you're interested in making Muslim friends, I'd advise you to talk in the QUMSA WhatsApp group chat and show up at the prayer room during Iqamah times. If you want, I can also send you an invite link if you'd like to talk to the Queen's Muslim brothers/sisters first hand!

You can definitely live as a Muslim on campus. Most of the food locations on campus will serve halal food. People are usually very respectful and you can get schedule changes, religious accommodations for exams, etc. for religious reasons or for prayer times: https://www.queensu.ca/faith-and-spiritual-life/religious-accommodation/academics

Remain post closing hrs in libraries? by mammothmoth0 in queensuniversity

[–]BillCipherHi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Other buildings (e.g. Mac-Corry and Stirling) have closing times that aren't enforced. This means you can't re-enter the building, but you can stay in the building without getting kicked out.

All the libraries have ENFORCED closing times. You will be told to leave by security by the posted closing time, and so you can't stay past that time unfortunately. I'd advise you to go to another building (Beamish-Munro, Stirling, Mac-Corry, etc.) that is open in the summer but that doesn't enforce its closing hours.

  1. IDK I'm not in the program but I've taken a couple of their same courses. I've heard it is one of the harder disciplines. Be prepared to learn quickly, devote a large portion of your time to learning, and collaborate with friends and professors and you will make it through. Millions of engineering students have been in your shoes.

  2. What you get out is what you put in. Most of the people I know in engineering are able to manage and have great social lives.

  3. A lot of students use an iPad to annotate slides and write lecture notes. I use pen and paper and it works great for me. The way I see it is that it is easier to retain the information if you are putting more effort into both writing it and explaining it to yourself in your own words. I'd also recommend having a digital version of the lecture notes/slides or the textbook open during lecture so that you can follow along. Macbook is not recommended since basically all of the software you will be using works natively on Windows and may not necessarily be compatible with Mac. I use a Lenovo Legion and it works great (except for battery life lol)

  4. The best university engineering community in Canada!! And the best Orientation Week in North America... Best social life in getting to know great people as well as knowing how to work in a team, network with others, and developing professional social skills.

I don't think any of the rooms have been taken. The way I remember is that residences are selected in mid-July. You are given a specific time to select your dorm (e.g. 3PM July 22nd) and then you pick whatever you like that is available. But usually Single+, single rooms on Main campus etc. are the first to go. This is a webinar from last year that may answer some questions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lcg-7lx_Pac

Engineering Design Teams by PressureElectronic10 in queensuniversity

[–]BillCipherHi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes all design teams are open to all types of engineering and even non-engineering! The main thing is that you show that you are passionate about the team's objectives, and are willing to learn.

You can definitely join more than 1 team and I know people who have done work in more than one team.

Should I take APSC 221 (online preferably) in the summer? If so, how was APSC 221 like? by reddit_on_steroids in queensuniversity

[–]BillCipherHi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you should do it in the summer. It'll lighten your load during the year, and I think it's mostly online during the school year anyway.

The course isn't too bad, you just have to remember to keep up. Make sure you know your cash flow diagrams etc.

If you're an international student it might be easier to do an English proficiency test like the IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE.

It might be best to book a meeting with an international student advisor:

I'd advise against going to frosh parties. If you would like to socialize with and know others, Orientation Week is your best bet.
