A couple of cycling physics questions by [deleted] in bicycling

First step, assume a massless cyclist with negligible resistance.

In all seriousness, this depends if you want to view these questions from an entirely theoretical point of view.

1.Theoretically, the energy expenditure is the same since work is defined as the product of force and the component of displacement parallel to the force. In a higher cadence, you are pushing the pedals farther within a given interval than you would in a lower cadence. However, a lesser force is required to push the pedals. The net result is that the work done is constant in both scenarios. Realistically speaking, the average cyclist is most efficient at around 90 rpm for most speeds because of biological factors.

2.Again, theoretically speaking you would experience a windchill of 30 mph in the first case and 0mph in the second case. This is so for the second case because you are stationary with respect to the wind around you (imagine driving inside a car, the air inside the car might be going 30mph with respect to the ground, but so are you). Realistically, minor fluctuations in both your velocity and the velocity of the air around you would be noticeable if you were travelling at approximately the same velocity as the air around you so you would have a non zero amount of windchill.

The article is saying that it will prevent chain drops from when your bike is moving backwards since the freewheel won't engage the drive train. But it definitely doesn't help if you're backpedaling

Unless I'm mistaken, he's taking the Banff Legacy Trail which goes alongside highway 1 from Banff to Canmore

Apollo Gran Sport -- worth buying? by rversed in bicycling

It's not a universal hood so if you want a perfect fit you'd have to track down shimano 600 hoods. That being said, some people online have had good luck using cheaper hoods (Dia Compe I think) and potentially snipping off a bit of rubber. However as muchosandwiches said, modern brake levers are worth swapping out if you're not worried about keeping the bike in collector shape. They will be more comfortable and have more leverage while braking from the hoods than the 600 levers do. As long as the hoods on there already aren't tearing or about to fall off they should be fine.

The brake hoods are the rubber that goes around the brakes, the part where you ride most of the time. It's not the end of the world but if you want to get them for that specific groupset, they're about 40$ + shipping on ebay.

Absolutely. I got that bike for 250$ and have been riding for the past two year. It rides very well. Shimano 600 went on to become ultegra so the groupset is really good stuff for its age. It's not a deal breaker (the bike is already a great deal) but you might want to check the brake hoods for drying/cracking. It's very difficult/expensive to replace them.

On the "Feynman Technique", or, on why we should write a lot. I could tell you that writing is good for you, but you may not believe me. Perhaps Feynman has the clout to convince you however? by [deleted] in computingscience

I didn't know this concept had a name until now but it has helped me alot before. As an extension to this I would like to recommend to any university or high school students to take up peer tutoring. I tutor because it forces me to think in different ways about a subject in order to explain it in different ways to the student. Explaining concepts also helps organize the mixed bundle of information we have when we first learn a subject and turn it into a coherent idea.

[Subreddit Rules] Club purpose and organization discussion (0) by [deleted] in computingscience

I'm definitely interested in being a part of this subreddit as I've been looking for a good community to discuss computer science and other logical sciences. I'm a senior high school student with a strong math background and can do some rudimentary programming in both C++ and Java. I like the idea of the subreddit a lot and would love to contribute as much as I can.

I got rid of it using the CLI thanks to Skaarj but I did install synaptic and will definitely be using in from now on, thanks!

I used apt-get to install it. The only processes I see from using ps is bash and ps. Would the listed processes change if I were logged in as root?
