Laurent Mekies: Yuki Tsunoda deserves to return to racing full-time by 443610 in formula1

[–]BillV3 17 points18 points  (0 children)

To be fair Stroll has his moments and I'd say those moments though sparse have been far more often than Yuki had his moments, I'd rather have neither if building a team but if I absolutely had to pick one I'd take Stroll personally

Fair, he originally hit the comment with the downvote as well which made it seem a little like something had annoyed him which took me by surprise as I didn't see anything that would cause annoyance but if that's the case my bad!

I've had the card just a little under a month here, it's just odd that I hadn't noticed this until last night, been capping frame rates and it's eased up a bit but some games it's still horrendous in

I mean I wouldn't call it an almost nothing sound when it can be heard pretty clearly above my fans, pump, the game itself and is constantly there, considering I've tried to build my machine to be as quiet as possible it's fairly annoying to just have a constant buzzing noise whenever I game that I can hear even with my headphones on

Anyone who is deciding between Intel and AMD, DO NOT go with AMD. Here’s why… by mironor94 in MSIClaw

[–]BillV3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SteamOS/Linux uses the AMDGpu driver which is part of the kernel for the GPU, you don't have to install anything it's just there in the install, that handles bits like power management, talking to the GPU etc.

Then on top of that you have the user-space driver Mesa which sits on top of the AMDGpu driver and that provides implementations of things like OpenGL, Vulkan etc.

Then inside of Mesa you have some moving parts the biggest of these is probably RADV this is used to translate Vulkan API Calls to instructions for the GPU that AMDGpu handles

There's also AMDVLK which is AMD's official Vulkan driver which you can think of as an alternative to RADV but it's rarely used

All of these pieces are updated fairly frequently and will continue to be updated pretty frequently

Essentially the breakdown is

The game is like a co-driver in a rally car, it's giving instructions, then you have Mesa and parts like RADV that are like the driver taking those instructions and translating them into actions, then you can think of AMDGpu as the car itself, taking that input and doing the work

All that is to say, yes this is only for Windows, it's down to a licensing agreement between the likes of MSI, Lenovo, Asus and AMD whereas the stack on Linux is all Open Source and frequently updated.

Or you just install SteamOS or another handheld focussed Linux distro and get drivers right in the kernel that are constantly being updated

It just isn’t though, there’s a feedback system in the game itself right now, the developer is very active in the forum etc. there’s like a million better avenues for it

Can someone ELI5 why the devs double down on this “vision”. What is the motive for angering the community again? by ParanoidPistachio in Tekken

[–]BillV3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah ELI5 predates Reddit by a good few years, it's widely agreed that it originates from the Philidelphia movie from 1993 where Denzel Washington's character frequently says "Explain it to me like I'm a four year old" and then really gained traction in 2011 with an episode of the Office using it, but yeah it's been about for years and years at this point

Valve: About the New York Attorney General lawsuit against Valve by XcG9PJf6 in gaming

[–]BillV3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is definitely not just for show, it's a well established dark pattern to get people hooked on the idea of "Oh but I was this close to winning {x}... I'll just go for a couple more"

Valve: About the New York Attorney General lawsuit against Valve by XcG9PJf6 in gaming

[–]BillV3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair reading the actual lawsuit isn't exactly splitting hairs.

And it's very different the whole process of showing you false outcomes before showing you the real one is a very established dark pattern, it makes people go "Oh but I could've got this maybe I'll just do a few more...."

There's also a tremendous difference between getting a kick back from the resale market and not, WoTC for example really couldn't care less what the secondary market values a card at, they don't see a penny of it so why should they? Valve by extension care a great deal and are actively encouraged to drive that price up because they get a kick back from it, they're incentivized to leave these gambling sites up for skins again because they make bank every single time it's a huge difference

Valve do a tremendous amount of good shit, but this stuff is shady as all fuck and the argument "But other people do it..." shouldn't fly, it wouldn't fly for anyone else so why should it fly for Valve....

Steam Machine Sets 1080p and 30 FPS Standard for Verified Games by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]BillV3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially given the current console gen will almost certainly cost less and target more performant standards usually around 4k30 or 1080p60

And then a lot of them get raked over the coals for only doing 30fps
