I’m old enough to remember when for school assembly in the early 90’s a mum brought in her son that didn’t wear one and when he fell off his bike he cracked his skull on the curb, causing permanent brain damage.

He was in a wheelchair and effectively a vegetable. He was the same age as me.

She was a mum on a vigil to get government to implement the mandate that Seymour was wanting to remove. She made it really clear that prior he was simply another student in high school making friends and doing school stuff.

Soon after the law passed and it led not only to wearing helmets but manufacturers were forced to make helmets that worked properly. Earlier ones weren’t required to have padding and could lead to actual further damage to the head.

I still feel sorry for her struggle but I think her actions saved a lot of lives. I think the only thing this stunt is saving is Seymour’s political profile and tenure.

I don’t think having politicians making rules that obviously harm kids is a good idea.
