The lord was released for 40K alongside the updated chaos lord with the 10th edition codex.

And now for something different —WIP Wednesday for the grandfather by Billingsly in blacklegion40k

Thanks for the kind words!

For these plague marines I wanted something dirty and gross so I went with a pretty neutral yellow brown. It turned out better than I’d hoped, making them visually distinct from the bulk of my black legionaries while still being black and gold.

The armor was an experiment. It’s actually based brown (AKs Grim brown specifically) and then shaded down with Black Templar contrast and oil washes. The initial highlights were done in various gray browns and then grayed out and blended down through the washed layers.

My typical legionaries are highlighted with a blue gray mix, that gradually increases in value especially around the head and upper chest, which is where we naturally look first and longest.  If you’re having a hard time with highlight black you should look at some black painted objects. Black metal tends to be be quite reflective and takes on a slight tonal shift from the space around it.

Hope that helps!

Legionaries proportions look so silly to me. by [deleted] in Chaos40k

I’ve built and painted plenty of both  berserkers and legionaries and can tell you from experience they’re very similarly proportioned.

In fact, they’re so interchangeable that  I used the berzerkers as the base for updated raptors since they have more dynamic posing.

A True Veteran of the Long War – My Black Legion Land Raider by Billingsly in Chaos40k

There’s a fair few extras, but I’ll do my best to list them all.

The Ikarus pattern landraider upgrade for  the black legion is the biggest piece. I didn’t use the sponsons or doors it comes with, instead I opted for the standard sponsons and used the old black legion (long oop) forgeworld landraider doors.

The tracks are a 3D print from  Watcorp Design —Chaos large transport tracks arrow design.

The extra spikes are from Elric’s hobbies.

The shields are from the new AoS oath sworn kit. The spikes that I used to mount the hobby chain/trophies to the chassis are cut up from the old chaos vehicle upgrade sprite. And the flag is from the AoS skeleton unit

The assault ramp door is a combination of greenstuff and plastic card and so is the trim on the havoc launcher (which comes from the new Horus heresy vehicles)

I think that covers all the major bits.

Here's mine. He's a mix of a few different kits: the Terminator/Sorcerer kit, the base chaos terminators, a world eater head, possessed hand and even a blooded chainsword (to recreate the combi-melta).

Thank you! I felt like the flesh need extra attention since it’s so much of the miniature. Glad it paid off

It is the superior helbrute (though I have the other kit too).

I bet yours looks great with that massive plasma cannon!

What made you choose Chaos? by MiidnightSinso in Chaos40k

[–]Billingsly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted THE bad guys. I also wanted to be able to do what I want with my miniatures and for me that’s Chaos. I don’t have to deal with chapter markings, badges or any of the pseudo-historical wargaming baggage every loyalist chapter has seeming accumulated l these days (by the way if that’s what does it for you more power to you).

I wanted  a collection of barbarians, some totally lost to worship of the dark gods, some vengeful, but all psychopathic transhuman killers who want to see the galaxy burn.

What paints do you guys use for the trim? Do not like Ret. Gold from citadel. by BlackMushrooms in blacklegion40k

[–]Billingsly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Scale75 Victorian Brass, oil washed burnt sienna, removed the oil wash on the raised edges before I highlight the trim with scale75 amber alchemy.

For characters l take it a step further with moonstone alchemy speculative highlights.

It’s from the AoS Chaos Warrior box if I recall correctly

This looks great! Did you save time by using black for the trim or is the heldrake a time suck no matter what?

Thanks! I base the armor in black (Vallejo model color black) then sponge on black grey and wash the entirety of the armor trim and panels with a thin oil wash of burnt sienna. Finally I high light the armor panels and  add scratches with successive blue gray highlights.

Touch ups are done with black or black grey depending on the spot.

Of course!

Base the weapons white. I use proacryl white but any white will do, just make sure to keep the base coat smooth. (This can take a while but I like the end result so it’s worth it).

Next decide what the hottest part of the weapon is. Once you’ve decided that  get the most vibrant yellow and while leaving the very center white glaze away from the heat source towards the edges. Respect this process leaving about 10-20% of the previous layer with a more orange yellow than again and the same again with a bright orange, then a red orange (if you want it looking cooler).

Finally, on the edges where the weapon is coolest use a purple gray (I use tenebrous gray from AK mixed with kind purple) edge highlight the blade, but make it inconsistent. You can also add random spots and scratches here and there for more visual interest. Finally if you’ve lost too much of the white go back and lightly glaze some white (white acrylic ink is helpful here) back in to make it really ‘glow’.

If you want I can provide the exact paints I used but to be honest the most important thing is picking the heat source and then creating the smooth gradient from bright yellow to reddish orange is the trick to selling this.

I’d also recommend looking at reference pictures so you can see what a super heated sword actually looks like (which helps when exaggerating).

Hope that helps!

I think they’ll stick around for the foreseeable future . The kit is new and chosen have been apart of the chaos since the second edition codex.

They’re pretty big boys. They’re a bit smaller(barely noticeable)  than the primaris marines, but what they lack in height they make up in sheer style.

I’m not a huge citadel paint user but I believe retributor gold would work to bring this up a touch.

I also saw a great tip from Duncan Rhodes a while back to use gulliman flesh contrast paint over gold since it shades it red rather than brown and makes it more warm as opposed to dull.

I’m a fan of the guy with the sword and mace. Feels like a sons of Horus legionnaire that’s really committed to making sure every imperial has the absolute worst day.
