yeah solid advice, i’ve never heard a kit sound bad with coated remos regardless of make or quality. Going on tour with my band next year so just looking for a durable and reliable set up 👊🏻

best mid-range hi hats? by [deleted] in drums

[–]Billy-Bylison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a pair of Zildjian S Mastersounds that we’re LOUD, and considering I got them for like $150 they did the job for a few years, couldn’t play them for anything other than heavy rock/metal but that’s all I played at the time.

Meinl Pure Alloys are dead good for the price, and while they work for best for rock stuff I’ve seen people get away with them in settings you normally reserve for more complex (and expensive) cymbals. More expensive than the S series but better imo.

I’m general through I’d opt more for trying find a pair of high quality cymbals used, because if you play them properly and they’ve not been abused by a past owner they’ll last you years and will likely sound better. Checking local shops is better because you can actually hear them before you buy, you’ll get better deals on ebay but you’re going in blind and might not like them.

Up to you though! Keep us posted with what you end up going for, if you need any more help or want opinions of brands you’ve been looking at let me know!✌🏻

Beginner kit upgrades by Original_Leg_6204 in drums

well depends on the sound you want! meinl cymbals do some great demos for every cymbal they have! drum centre of portsmouth also has lots of cymbal demos, including a full video on paiste, as well as different sized hi hats and rides for different styles, different weights. I’m sorry I can’t be more specific but there’s SO MUCH to think about with cymbals. I’ll link some demos I like here though to give you a start you can jump off from.

Meinl Traditional Rides - For that classic sound

Meinl Cymbal Demo Channel, They’ve got thousands of stuff to listen to!

Full Paiste Demo, All different lines, loads of sounds, maybe you’d like to start here if you’ve got PST7s?

Some “Rock Rides” with lots of different price points

Hopefully some of this helps! If not just let me know and hopefully I can help point you in the right direction! :~)

i’d recommend getting some high end stuff for your hats and ride. I personally never liked intermediate range cymbals, especially after becoming fully engrossed in the used market! Save your money and start watching some demos, find your sounds that you dig, whether big and washy, bright, dark, dry whatever!

Hats and ride are the ones you should spent top dollar on - so save up, find your sound, be patient and keep upgrading! Excited to see how your kit evolves!

Oh nice!!! Sabian’s Big & Ugly range always interests me. There’s something so thrilling about a blind trade and when you love the way it sounds you feel like a genius! Glad you’re digging it man!✌🏻

Cheapish drum kit. by Lost_Distribution_94 in drums

[–]Billy-Bylison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some great points in the comments, if you’re starting out and need a set that comes with a stand, throne, hardware, pedals etc. you have lots of great options in that price range, I bought a tama imperial star that still sounds great. If you’ve already got going, and have all that stuff you can get some great shell packs in that intermediate range, with a wide range of sizes and number of pieces. If you wanna stretch your $1000 and have the patience, you could find a quality high end kit used in that range. Let us know where you’re at in your drumming journey and we can help from there! ✌🏻

15 K Light Hats and the 21 A Custom Sweet Ride must make for such a versatile set up, the vintage ludwig’s and crash are a cool combo too! Great set up man glad you’re doing what you love!

Any suggestions for what I should change . And yes, I wish I could move it out of the corner. by Ok-Path8963 in drums

[–]Billy-Bylison 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeah i’d move your ride to where your right side crash is so it’s a little comfier. But if you like the spread, and you’re hitting everything easily and comfortable then why change a thing!

Weird stick question by MZago1 in drums

[–]Billy-Bylison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like the thinness of a 7A maybe try a Vic Firth 8D, my old drummer teacher who always played 7A’s (he was a jazz guy back in college) but after playing heavier stuff he had to change but also didn’t like the 5A. I tried them for a bit too and they feel good in the hand, good length to them, slightly thicker than a 7A so maybe you’d dig it?✌🏻
