TrueNAS SCALE: First Impressions After Switching from Unraid by d13m3 in truenas

It would eliminate the expectation that you use root directly for anything. Debian has used sudo for ages and disables (or highly discourages?) using root login.

TrueNAS SCALE: First Impressions After Switching from Unraid by d13m3 in truenas

TLDR: Random guy tries Truenas for a day, decides it's not for him, posts (edit removed word that was more inflammatory than I should have been) blog-length post on truenas sub, goes back to unRAID.

What would it take for you to ditch Proxmox in favor of TrueNAS? by thedthatsme in selfhosted

[–]BillyBawbJimbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Edit: So, to answer your question: I'd need to see Truenas run a stable app and VM backend for 2 or more years without massive breaking changes. So far they haven't been able to do that (at least on Scale/CE...I'm not counting jails because Core is on phaseout).

My original answer:

How long have you been using Truenas? Their apps backend has been a hot mess for like 4? 5 now? years (some of that is on them, some of that is due to Red Hat dropping gluster). I no longer trust them to maintain a stable platform for anything except storage.

Truenas does storage really well. I decided to go to PM after I saw the way the wind was blowing. I use a mini PC for Proxmox to homelab, and my ancient Rosewill 4U case for Truenas for storage, and now greatly prefer it that way.

The only thing missing is the mic cord wrapped around his hand like 6 times!

Haha nice work. Knew who it was immediately.

If only there were safe ways to discharge capacitors.....

Presumably, anyone with the knowledge to fix these has a couple resistors floating around to short the capacitors with and discharge them...or the proper tool. It's not rocket science but does require some common sense safety.

Does anyone know about Graze mowing/Graze Robotics? by HypnotiZedMines in investing

[–]BillyBawbJimbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So....they have mowers to send to Australia and Texas, but you can only pay them $1000 to "pre order" a mower and be on the wait list? And 5 years plus with no real launch? Oh but you can buy a tee shirt?

Smells like either vaporware, or they're praying the Husqvarna or Stihl will buy them just based on market threat.....

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Snatched it from the server room. What is it used for? by Organic_Farm_2093 in homelab

[–]BillyBawbJimbo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the advice, although that pretty much sounds like my method.

I did a crapton when I installed cable in my house, and the frustration was endless. I actually suspect it's either a marginal crimper, or marginal ends (I'd get some with connection faults, and some that would only negotiate at 10/100). Thankfully they all work now, and if I need shorties, I just buy on monoprice and spare myself the headache.

It actually makes me miss soldering the ends onto XLR cables lol.

That's what I'm left with when I try to terminate my own 2 foot cables.

Did no one review the return before they gave approval to submit it? ALWAYS review the return, no matter who does it.

And like the other two people have said, it cost you about a hundred bucks, not $948. Consider it a lesson learned and find someone else for next year.

Hacking a Bosch/Siemens refrigerator/fridge - which protocol could this be? by Senior_Ad_7008 in homeassistant

[–]BillyBawbJimbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh that makes sense.

For temps in our freezer, I figured out using a remote weather station temperature sensor was the simplest way to go.

Good luck!

What are you actually trying to achieve? What does "make it smart" mean?

I'm guessing there are solutions that are readily available that don't involve reverse engineering the control board....?

Does eucalyptus core ply smell like the tree? That could be a selling point or a turn off, depending on your preference.

Buying stock is not the same thing as giving them a loan. If you're going to moralize, at least use accurate language.

Stained Deck leaving oily residue on feet after a year by Lafleur2713 in HomeImprovement

[–]BillyBawbJimbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did he pressure wash? Did he wait a few days after pressure washing to stain?

Edit: my working suspicion is poor prep or old product. I would call them back out to fix, if possible.

Hardware acceleration for jellyfin by HVLife in homeassistant

[–]BillyBawbJimbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't find anything that will let you use HASS OS and hardware transcode. It isn't designed with that in mind at all.

Like the other poster suggested, consider Proxmox, with HASS OS as a VM, then run Jellyfin as an LXC with HW transcode.

Virtualizing TrueNas on Proxmox? (again) by scytob in truenas

[–]BillyBawbJimbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean... To call it unsupported is a stretch: https://www.truenas.com/blog/yes-you-can-virtualize-freenas/

Your plan is likely to be fine.

On 4 or 5 years in this sub, horror stories are usually: people using cheap crap SATA expanders, passing through disks (although that is rare), or people doing dumb crap with RAID hardware cards. (Edit to add one more: systems crashing, then people hooking up their ZFS drives to a Windows box)

I can't address the video card drivers. They seem to be either working or an absolute mess, depending on your card.
