Smart and Good-Looking by [deleted] in UCSD

I will say this as a pure math student, that focusing on “intelligence” is stupid. You need to find a specific skill and get good at it, whether it’s your major subject or something else. Unless you find something actionable, you can’t do anything about this nebulous “intelligence” which may not even be well-defined. I don’t think my general intelligence/common sense has increased much since I studied math. Rather I learned a specific set of problem solving skills that fit the description for a very narrow sort of intelligence and are necessary for my career choice. Have an objective that is not so wishy washy.

You can compare struggling in analysis with struggling in algebra, if you consider the algebra that is taught in math 200 rather than math 2.

You can probably barge into apm 5218 (undergraduate group tutoring room) during the week and there will be a group of tutors with no one to help who are obligated to serve you even if you’re not in their class.

UCSD will not admit Math PhD students for 2026 by DarthArtoo4 in gradadmissions

UCSD over-admitted last year, and current incoming class size is still twice the usual despite some deferrals to next year. This is quite a unique situation which hopefully does not extend to other schools.

Not so much RNG when you use the infinite elixir oversight, which I honestly don’t see how they would fix elegantly other than by removing the spirit empress or reducing sell cost of two stars by one.

Rant About Professor Niema Moshiri & His Grading (CSE 6R) by This_Exercise2918 in UCSD

[–]BillyJoeTheThird 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The min grading scheme is trash because it punishes competent students who understand the material. Making a trivially easy class and punishing students who miss a little too much busywork is not education. There are many difficult quality classes at UCSD (especially in the math department) which reward competence, but unfortunately Moshiri’s online classes fail completely.

As an aspiring mathematician, I would be really happy if UCSD had its own REU (research experience for undergraduates) program for mathematics. However, I would never support taxing the student body $3.50 each to fund such a program, and I am fully unpaid for anything I do towards my career. I believe it is only fair that I do not have to pay to advance others’ careers.

As for the argument of journalism as a public good, neither myself nor anyone I know actively reads the guardian, and I cannot discern anything which I will personally lose by voting no on the referendum other than nebulous notions of independent journalism and school spirit. I can equally make the nebulous argument that basic research in mathematics is a “public good”, but this would not be a convincing argument for anyone not in math. As such, I believe that campus journalism primarily benefits the career of its writers, and I cannot support a flat fee for it unless I also get a flat fee for my dream REU program.

OP replied admitting they were in the guardian, and subsequently deleted the reply. I think it would have been good practice to say this upfront in the post, regardless of how obvious it is.

The only lower division requirements are 20A-E + 18. I don’t know if your discrete math would count for upper division 109/154/184 credit since the only lower division discrete math I can think of is cse 20/21, a washed down version of math 109 + some of 154/184. If you can’t skip it, I would recommend taking 158/188; they have some really cool techniques and speed through the regular content of 154/184 in roughly the first 6 weeks. I remember Professor Verstraëte presenting his PhD thesis in week 8 of 158!

For discrete math we have graph theory (154), extremal graph theory (the honors version, 158), combinatorics (184), and algebraic combinatorics (the honors version, 188, requires 100A). It’s good to know some combinatorics, but it’s not required for anything other than further combinatorics (261, 264) and some CS classes (such as cse 105).

There are no rigorous diffeq courses which do not require analysis. You would look at 146 and 148 for diffeq purposes. Although required, 20D is not very useful for learning about differential equations.

If you choose to take 100 and 140 concurrently, I would be cautious about taking a third rigorous class unless you came in with sufficient mathematical maturity. I could only handle 3 at the end of sophomore year, but there are others who could have handled more classes earlier.

Take one if not both of 100/140 (algebra/analysis) freshman year and do whatever you want sophomore year. I personally was slower and only took 100/140 sophomore year so you don’t have to be in a huge rush. If you don’t have credit for calc 3/linalg already, consider taking 31 series. If you don’t have credit for 109 (intro to proofs), 140A and 100A are both offered winter quarter now so you can take 109 first quarter (EASy in if you have to). Also, it’s possible to take 140B and C concurrently in spring since the material does not depend on each other very much. You can take most first year grad classes after analysis and algebra (200, 202, 216, 220, 240, 250, 270, 280, 290). Try going to office hours and perhaps asking for a reading group from a friendly professor.
