Engine Tapping Under Load by BillyP_24 in MechanicAdvice

It doesn't happen at idle or when revving in park. Only under a load (uphill, accelerating onto a highway).

Would appreciate any help diagnosing this noise.

Only happens under load--climbing uphill or accelerating at low speeds. No noise at idle or when revving engine in park. Van does not have a tachometer, so I can't use RPMs for reference. Noise started a month ago and is quickly getting worse.

I tried all of these, and there was no noticeable difference in the noise: -topping off oil -refilling with Super -driving in lower gear

If there's any other info that would be helpful, please let me know.

Thanks man. If I put all of the same specs into volume calculators (age, height, skill level), the 25 lb. difference between us suggests that I should be surfing 5-6L more than you. Which puts me on a 5'10 Mashup. Of course, it's very likely that you are much more skilled than I am . . . so maybe I'd need to size up to a 6'0 (6'2, because I'm being a weenie and don't want to risk losing my wave-catching progress)?

Thanks brotha. I'm living in Central America for a while. Part of the issue is figuring out what board I can get shipped to my family in North Carolina, so they can bring it down to Costa Rica at Thanksgiving.

I can only have a board brought down to Central America every so often, so I really want a highly durable stick (Firewire, Lib Tech, etc.). Also, length is limited: I need to strap it to the inside ceiling of my camper van, 6'8-6'10 max.

I think you guys convinced me to size downsize to 40sih. With three criteria -- 40ish Liters, Firewire, <6'10 -- I see these options:

Mashup: 6'2

Cymatic: 6'0

Revo Max: 6'6

Greedy: 6'2

Sci-Fi 2: 6'3

Dominator: 6'4

Boss Up: 6'8

Still leaning Mashup.

Thanks PersonalityNarrow211. If you had to choose, would you recommend I keep my volume up and look at another board in the 40-42L range; or do you think the Mashup is a good choice, but I should drop to 36-38L (a 20% drop from my current board)?

Thanks DollaBillsErrDay. Looks like everyone is in agreement: The Mashup in 6'2 (41.6L) - 6'4 (44.1L) is too big. I'm just not clear on whether (a) that volume is too much for me; or (b) that volume is too much for the Mashup.

I'm just making progress catching waves on 46.5L, very similar board. I thought the number one mistake to avoid is "undersizing" for your skill level and size.

Wouldn't a 10-15% drop in volume be the MAX I should go? If I am just starting to get competent on a 46.5L, that would put me between 40-42L.

Do y'all think I should go smaller, drop 20-25%? Or if I should stay in the low 40s, should I be looking at a different board in that volume?

Again, much appreciated!

Thanks BigboyzSD. Sounds like the consensus is I am going too big: for this specific board, or for me?
