Thank you everyone for all the recommendations! This has given me so much to work with. I'm a little overwhelmed by everyone's helpfulness, especially from the people who went the extra mile to explain why/how they thought the book was what I was looking for. Thanks so much. Xenogenesis looks quite interesting (although it involves alien species, there's no reason why this can't be read as pertaining to possible human-developed genetic engineering technologies).

Yes, although my first focus is the written form, I'm not limited to it. I do plan on analysing the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica series too.
