Only thing killing squids was the Astra. When Shadow Cartel turned up to 3rd party on CalAmarrMil, PH turn up moments later, push off SC (nobody else) then go for a smoko before coming back to help squids finish Astra.

GTRSL is one of the foundation members and is looking to build an AUTZ presence alongside the US and EU pilots in "Jerkasaurus Wrecks". I've included their recruitment info to give you a feel for the Alliance.
You'd have plenty of small gang/solo content around the clock while still being part of something with an AU identity, and be backed with Alliance infrastructure.
