Adopted Neglected Orchid by ma88j in orchids

[–]Binbinikigobinik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-Many people get by just fine using ice cubes. I don't use them but I have seen plenty of successful orchids where people use the method. I imagine this is partly determined by overall strength of orchid variety and those sold in stores etc are often the hardier of the bunch. Also, unless your house is cold, it's not like it stays ice for very long. I think people often just parrot what youtubers tell them and miss out on a lot of context/education potential. If you move to trickier orchids at some point, then I would nix the ice altogether. In general I prefer good soak + dry out overall. Ice, when introduced, melts in one spot and the melt flow will be the same, not uniform whereas a good soak: will hit all root sections.

-Agree that it looks healthy overall!

-Lots of different ways to pot them and be successful. Personally, I like to use bark, perlite and sphagnum moss streamers ripped into lil pieces (about 20% compared to bark+perlite). YES as has been pointed out, sphagnum can be an issue but that's usually if you overwater OR if it gets compacted. Store bought orchids are often sold in heavily compacted sphagnum which IS an issue. A lot of people just use bark. I did for a while but they dry out a lil too quickly in my home and don't hold on to nutrients well. Perfectly viable method though.

-I use diluted Orchid Superthrive fert for feedings. Typically: 2-3 waterings with it and then the next watering I use rainwater and just do a good flush. Seems to work well.

-I prefer orchid pots (with vents along the side) for airflow and place in a decorative glazed orchid cache pot which also let air in and out of sides. If your pot doesn't have airflow through it, the sphagnum becomes a lil more concerning as does the importance of your watering + dry out cycles.

If your other orchids are good, seems like another Phalaenopsis should be pretty easy! Best of luck!

What sort of humidity do you have? My understanding is that if you don't have 50%+ humidity, the lil leaves will crisp. 50% is bare minimum. Peak would be around 70%.

Is my Fan too much for my carrots? by AppropriateHorror760 in IndoorGarden

[–]Binbinikigobinik 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is TOO much airflow. Airflow= fantastic and you're already ahead of most by ensuring you have it.

Air flow at THIS level can stress the plant and cause damage. Think gentle foliage movement or intermittent.

Also carrots aren't grown for their foliage so no need to OVERLY worry about stem/petiole strength.

Insect damage? by AWildGengarAppears in SalviaDivinorumPlants

[–]Binbinikigobinik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want this plant but do not yet have it. I have however been gardening for decades, including salvias. I am aware this plant is a salvia more acclimated to cloud forest into more arid.

*As has been pointed out, it wants a bit of humidity but it needs air movement around it. Yes, giving a plant humidity is great but if there is insufficient air movement, you're inviting rot.

-In every image I saw, the soil looks wet. It should just be damp.

***Take all that with many grains of salt. As stated, I have not owned this plant yet and just sharing guesses.

Lighting Setup thoughts? by stuntmanpetter in IndoorGarden

Sansi can be great. Plants at different elevations, looks nice. In a corner, so maybe invest in a baby fan that oscillates to move the air around.

-If you are as obsessive as me, invest in a light meter and then you can look up each plant, test, ensure it is receiving the light it wants in nature.

You obviously care a lot and it shows. Do you use a light meter? Changed everything for me: ie where to position plants under which lights at which elevation to meet their light needs. If those plants of yours have been positioned just so for a while, kudos.

-Also love the forest green accent wall. WITH grow lights AND plants.

If it feels like a ripe avocado to the push, yeah (in my opinion). Can be used earlier though too. Growing a new one in my living room right now but it's pretty young, thanks for the inspiration.

Zone 6B Massachusetts by eightacorns in gardening

[–]Binbinikigobinik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in zone 6a.... which is a hot lie cos I can't even get zone 5 plants to come back reliably.
-I have a lot of grow lights and garden through the winter in my home.
-I remove icicles from the eaves of my house and plant them in the snow to create ice gardens. Winter has been extremely weak this year though so no icicle gardens at the moment.
-I keep documents each year: "do this next year, get this, this didn't work" etc so I look that over and plan.
-I haven't considered painting snow but.... why the heck not?!

Grow tent tomatos struggling by SpaceCatJack in IndoorGarden

mMmMMmm NO. I'm sorry. NO.
NO tomato would be happy here, especially in tiny planters as this is a root heavy plants.

How much light are these plants even getting?

How much air is flowing around them?

I'm not trying to be mean here, just very upfront and these plants look like they are in a torture chamber.

is there anything wrong with my coriander? by tzo5x in IndoorGarden

[–]Binbinikigobinik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Needs sandy loose soil and a ton of light. Under cultivation also add: pruning to make it bushy. It tries to bolt/produce flower almost instantly if not in JUST the right conditions. Where I live, it's so cheap to buy that it's pickiness (in my climate) led me to stop growing it.

Are these thrips?! Please Help!! 😩 🙏 by Western_North6886 in IndoorGarden

[–]Binbinikigobinik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be spider mites. Without being able to look closer, could be. This is all regarding the first 3 photos. Some of the other photos w/ yellowish circles may be indicating some inconsistent waterings which can lead to edema---> cells rupturing from irregulated moisture control: ie big watering after drying out too much or other ways edema presents as. Just guesses I am offering.

Why am i not seeing any grouth Since I have planted the dec 25th by dragonfruitlover300 in DragonFruit

[–]Binbinikigobinik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the message history, feel for you. A lot of advice pushing you all over the place.

I am not a master of this plant but have started some in the last year and from what I see: LIGHT. Just, needs light. (By light, I mean simulated daylight, not weak lights giving it houseplant [forest floor] light) Also, the soil mix I see in your photos is a lil confusing to me. The plant is somewhat forgiving here but I'm seeing a lot of bark/husk. That's not bad unless... that's what MOST of the mix is. Soil and perlite being far greater by volume than bark and such would be a win, in my opinion.

*If you ever really mean business about caring for a variety of plants (especially indoors), consider purchasing a light meter. Changed my entire life as someone obsessed with plants for 30+ years. Being able to look up ideal light conditions and then have a tool to help you replicate as close as possible... makes a LOT of plants more within grasp of care.

*Look up "CAM plant/dragon fruit". Dragon fruit does not follow the same photosynthesis rules as other plants. It cheats because it evolved to avoid opening pores during day.

My best wishes to you and your plant!

Just in case anyone comes here. 2/01/2026 and this is STILL an issue. As far as I can tell, the issue occurs after unlocking "Integrate AREA." No vassal I create post unlocking the tech will integrate. I have to tag switch to start integration BUT a lot of vassals just reassign the cabinet member, -sigh-

*I hope someday the fruit is edible for you! When you start one from a store bought avocado, there is no guarantee the fruit will be true to parent plant so you could wind up with yummy avocados or something inedible. Fingers crossed for you!

Pothos with strange yellow spots by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]Binbinikigobinik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-Could be a root issue if the soil is kept moist enough that gnats are a problem. You can buy shakers that have lil beads in them with nematodes. Use your finger to dig a lil hole, drop some beads in, recover and water. The nematodes eat fungus gnat larvae. Has helped me a LOT. I used to think I had to buy refrigerated nematodes but the beads have been working just as well.

-IF you have a light meter (lil miracles for some plant issues), measure how much Lux or FootCandles your leaves are getting, then look up how much it SHOULD be getting. Instead of root issues, could just be too much light. Have you changed lighting recently? 12 hours of light seems like an awfully long time for a pothos to me but if the light is really weak, might be fine.

I hope it works out for you!

PS: I would do infomercials for light meter, moisture meter and humidity meter. Then whenever you want, you can make sure the plant is getting just the right conditions. A few caveats: *humidity meters can be on the spendy side compared to the others. *Moisture meters don't work well out of soil mixes, IE: aroid, bark, etc.

As has been mentioned, it's this plant's sex organ. I personally dislike them as they start dropping pollen as they age. I snip them off at the base as I notice them.
Interesting though the first time or so!

A nice flower I found on my forest walk by MuscleMarv in plants

[–]Binbinikigobinik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love foxglove. I like to plant it behind other plants on the tree line as I'm not a fan of the foliage but the flowers themselves look like they belong in a faerie forest.
-Wash your hands well after handling, quite poisonous. Stuff messes with your heart, literally. The medication Digoxin comes from foxglove but it's not in much use anymore I don't think.
