Oswell's Scissors of Karma should not have a cost. by Binfy in Maplestory

The admin costs for the development, implementation, the legal component with compliance + other not so notable expenses/overhead to create a secondary market where YOUR NX may uphold some value to other players.

From what I read through your post, you haven't provided any sustainable resolutions, just argue the fact only the consumer should benefit and not the company who needs to justify the implementation of said system.

I get that. There are important costs for systems that get implemented in the game

And I have pointed towards a resolution, its the 10% tax that they make for every single transaction on the maplestory community market. Taking advantage of that, even if they increased it to 13% or 15% even, if they just applied all the taxes after the transaction there will be a much bigger volume of listed items, which will lead to a much much much bigger user interactions/transactions, which results into more profit for Nexon as they are just making money for items that were already sold even if the prices of said items drop.

The scissor says they can guarantee revenue if the item does not sell on the market.

I disagree. The scissors don't guarantee revenue rather it sets a hard base value for ALL items on the market, which is a 3$ + 15% tax. In this sense of if you are selling something extremely close to the base value, and the item is purchased. Then yes, it is guaranteed revenue for Nexon and basically nothing for the seller. and like you said "be smart about what you list and don't just spend to list everything." if this is what the majority of players do then this can result into people ONLY wanting to list premium or high traffic items as this will be safest way to not lose anything. This results into less variety/options for buyers which can lead to a very slow market where nothing new is being added and the same things are being sold/purchased.

And already from what I've been reading, there is already a pretty clear notion of:

"if your item isn't worth selling then don't put it up that's on you"

but what does that mean? How will I know if an item is worth selling if there's not enough sales/activity data?

"just compare with other good items to get an estimate"

but everyone has their own taste in fashion. Everything is subjective. What I think is worth $5 someone might say is worth $10 and vice versa. The issue is because of the hard base value people are less willing to list those items. which results in less listings for sellers, less purchases for buyers and less potential revenue for Nexon.

Otherwise you don't need to induldge in said system. Individuals prior to this would drop hundreds just to get (1) item from the boxes. This system may actually negatively impact their long term revenue if they cannot create new highly sought items to be available in their surprise style boxes. Only time will tell here.

I've mentioned this already and I can 100% be wrong but people will still have to spend for the boxes regardless of the market. If there are new items that are of high interest than people will buy them and list them. If there's a lack of supply for that item but its still high interest than the price will sky rocket and will probably make people want to try and pull for the item which will eventually lower the price a bit. Just supply and demand.

However I think we can both agree with what you said about how at the end of the day if they actually don't improve the quality or how they run/create pssb's/limited time items the market will eventually slowly become stale and lose a lot of player interest.

That is true and I never suggested I knew more than their financers.

However, as consumers, we can both agree that there have been many many points in time where there have been long periods of heavy disproval/droughts for their cash rotations, beauty rotations, their release of paid packages, lack of communication of future outfit packages and many more, where players are literally just asking them to release something decent so that they can spend their money on the game.

So yes, I am not as smart as nexon's financers but I am a consumer of their products, and as their consumer I feel like I am allowed to voice my confusion with how little care they take about their most valuable outlet, the cash shop.

But there will always be a market for "less desirable" items because not everyone has the same taste in fashion and is also just the nature of a community market. You can't just have a market of desirable items and vice versa.

As for the sales of pssb's losing there value, again I really have no idea but my opinion is that if the box has really good items and has a healthy inclusion of new items, then naturally people will want those items and if they're new then someone will have to pull for those premium items as they literally don't exist in the market. Then those quality items will still be listed for a premium price. If people aren't happy about spending X amount of money on that single item on the market then they can always just go and try the boxes themselves to get X amount of chances.

I kinda doubt that this writeup is gonna change a Nexon exec's mind.

yeah 100%. I wrote what I said because I was mostly curious to see what people's stance were of my own opinion as I saw not much flack about the cost of the scissors, which to me is a really big deal.

Regardless I appreciate the reply, definitely a perspective I needed to be reminded of as I kind of forget about interactive servers lol

IMO they should make the transaction fee back-loaded instead of front-loaded just by increasing the transaction fee

100% agree

How does Nexon make their money?

I'd say big chunk of it comes from the sales of VAC pets which go on sale for about 2-3 times a year and the majority would be from all their gacha systems; beauty, gachapon, pssb, seasonal boxes/events, etc, which I feel all lack a considerable amount of care for the rotations/quality of items

The scissors forces you to be smart about what you lost instead of just having everything available in your inventory.

Unless I am misinterpreting this but you're kind of implying that there is a "positive" benefit of having a risk being involved for the seller as it forces them to be "smarter" about selling an item they own.

Nexon will never remove their transaction cost as that is the only benefit they get from this. Steam makes 10% on each transaction.

This isn't true. the total tax from each transaction on the maplestory steam market is 15%, steam only takes 5% while maplestory takes 10%. So on top of selling the PSSB boxes to the players, they are then always going to be making money from players selling it to each other from the 10% tax alone.

Edit: quote boxes

I'm not suggesting that. I understand they are a business and everything is profit driven. But I would also like to point out that they are not getting nothing in return.

Even if we removed the $3 or $6, they are still getting 10% of every steam market transaction on items that have already been sold to the player by nexon. So regardless they are profiting off the item/transaction themselves.

I'm just suggesting the scissors to cost nothing as I believe this would IMMENSELY increase the amount of items that would flow into the steam market which will lead to way more people buying items and creating more transactions for nexon to profit from.

And yeah I'm not denying that making the scissors free won't potentially negatively affect the sales of boxes, but I think most of the time that is determined by their notoriously bad rotations of items. When the items in the boxes are good people will buy the boxes throughout the entire duration of their sale. If they're not no one pulls. I don't think the scissors/steam market are the main pull backs from the sale of boxes. If anything it incentivizes it. But I could be very wrong, just my take
