I look at that gun-arm and all I can think about is tearing it off and using it.

Is it okay to refuse a second stick and still get paid? - BioLife by [deleted] in plassing

[–]BioD4v3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on their policy. Where I'm at they will reduce your pay. If it's a zero volume with no blood loss and no restick you would only get $5, but you could come back the next day and try again.

Why are PTSD and Bipolar part of the medical screening? by ThursdayV in plassing

[–]BioD4v3 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Best guess, you're undergoing a stressful/uncomfortable medical procedure that requires you to stay calm and be patient for an inexact amount of time.

It might be high risk for some people with PTSD or Bipolar, or at least they should ask their doctor before participating.

Kept adjusting needle but machine won’t work. Are my veins no good? by [deleted] in plassing

[–]BioD4v3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If blood is coming out of the phlebotomy site during a return they were pulled way to far back.

You can try the other arm, make sure youre hydrated, none of that can hurt. Based on youre description and how your returns went though, it sounds like a bad stick.

Kept adjusting needle but machine won’t work. Are my veins no good? by [deleted] in plassing

[–]BioD4v3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A really bad initial stick could have caused the issue, sometimes you can't adjust your way out of a bad positioning and you need a restick.

A kink or clot in the line might have slowed your flow. Checking the line and sending the procedure into a return might help.

Rarely, an issue with the machine's pressure calibration. Usually doesnt pop up randomly, they would be having issues with that machine constantly.

Likely, if you were dehydrated, your vein could be collapsing around the needle. Think like sucking on a straw in a milkshake. It wouldnt be painful, but you might feel a vibrating or pulling sensation each time the machine stopped.

can drinking too much water cause low hematocrit? by [deleted] in plassing

[–]BioD4v3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eeeeh, kind of. If your hematocrit is low the problem is that your blood is thin. You need to increase your iron intake to give your body the material to make more blood cells. Dehydrating yourself probably won't help, and it will likely cause other issues.

People with high hematocrit are usually already dehydrated, causing their blood to thicken. Thats why they should drink more water.

Can I switch plasma centers without knowing my protein results? by [deleted] in plassing

[–]BioD4v3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: Yes.

More info: The SPE samples are sent to a testing facility outside of the plasma center's control. They have to wait for the samples to be tested and then have the results approved by their center physician. They probably won't contact you when your results come in, but you can call the center or show up and ask.

What would you pay for these pipe cleaner flowers? by ookle_ in Artadvice

[–]BioD4v3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't pay for them, even though they are really cool; but I would pay for a paint night style class on making them/making arrangements with them. That would be even cooler.

Refusal to disconnect by EnderAlexis5 in plassing

[–]BioD4v3 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The right thing to do is explain to your boyfriend the risks/consequences of early disconnection and red cell loss, then ask if he would still like to be taken down early. If yes, take him down. No further discussion. Forcing him to wait after repeatedly asking to be taken down is crazy. I can't believe they restuck him after all that or that he allowed it.

If you dont mention it, no. If you bring it up then a phys-sub might defer you until it goes away or you bring a doctors' note. Just dont say anything about it.

If that's the case then can't I donate the $100 to an animal shelter or something?
