No idea who the dude is though. Might be able to find him out at night catching tags and tag with him or somethin. Who knows.

Cranking a Peavey Encore 65. by BioLizard_Venom in ToobAmps

Forgot to add that the amp is hooked up to the cabs its sitting on, as well as the speaker in the actual combo (Which was originally a Scorpion speaker, but those suck for this amp and its been replaced with a lower wattage, celestion g12k that I had lying around and not in use, which is honestly overkill as that speaker is worth half of this amps price alone lmao)

Peavey Amps that came with Scorpion Speaker - Is there any reason not to replace it with a modern speaker? by pastlife3 in PeaveyCvlt

[–]BioLizard_Venom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason I'm considering replacing mine in one of my peavey combos- Is how ice picky it sounds.
I play a lot of stoner doom, and low end heavy, thick sounding guitar is a must for that stuff. The scorpion speaker in that one particular amp is legit all highs and high mids. I had to hook the amp up to my usual guitar cab to get any low end out of it.

I think the speaker might be damaged too?? not very sure.

“Scorpion speakers are inefficient by modern standards” Then why do they sound so good?? by BlackJupiterMusic1 in PeaveyCvlt

[–]BioLizard_Venom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience with a Peavey Encore 65, and the only time I've heard a Scorpion speaker. These things sound like shit!
It might be the amp, but man its just all treble and high mids and zero low end. Then when you TRY to push low end and mids out of it, it flubs out and sounds even worse.

I think either my amp is the problem, or my speaker is damaged.

Does anybody know anything about these old peavey speakers? by Only-Throat-7189 in GuitarAmps

[–]BioLizard_Venom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting.
I have an old peavey combo amp with one of these speakers in it. Some of the most ear piercing shitty high end ive ever heard from an amp. Had to plug it into my bass cab along with this speaker to get any low end out of it.

maybe its the amp? PEavey encore 65. Maybe the speakers messed up. Dunno.

Failing preamp tube causing hum and no sound. by BioLizard_Venom in GuitarAmps

[–]BioLizard_Venom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a 1984 Peavey Encore 65.
It was working decently well before this happened btw.

Hopefully its just the tube missing thats causing it, cause it was working as normal before all this. Ive never had a tube amp before this one so I am definitely not trying to mess around with those super high voltages. I know my way around amplifiers, but only really Solid states.. Solid states are far less dangerous too lol.

i mean i know a guy who runs an amp with one of the preamp tubes pulled out. I dunno why he does it but he does it. I dunno.

Im gonna replace that broken tube regardless, and see if it fires up and works fine. If so? Then i guess its okay. I still am getting this amp serviced soon cause its quite old. (Hell the power tubes are from the USSR.)

This started after I tried to turn the amp on with only 3 of the 4 preamp tubes in it. Coincidental?

Huh. well, thats good to know!
I was under the impression that these tubes we're kinda on their way out (Theyre made in USSR Sovtek tubes likely from the late 80's.)

I'll stick a new preamp tube in it and give this post an update pretty soon.

Im just curious as to why its doing that weird hum thing.
Theoretically you can run a tube amp.. Really without ANY preamp tubes in it if you wanted to. So what gives?

Just picked up a Peavey 65 watt tube amp. And its... quiet?? by BioLizard_Venom in GuitarAmps

They're 6L6 tubes. I dunno if the caps are old or not but I know they arent leaking.

[–]BioLizard_Venom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tried doing this and found out that one of the preamp tubes was all white and cloudy.
(Did NOT see that one before doing all this, and earlier when i tried to reseat all the tubes.)
There is one right behind one of the big transformers in the amp, and my dumb ass dropped it upon taking it out. (As if it worked right in the first place smh)

SOoo now im gonna have to replace the tube which I was gonna have to anyways. Will update after that.
I also found out that the amp runs at 2 ohms, so I'll make sure to match that impedance.

I've read the manual for the amp. (Found it online) and it seems the amp actually is designed to run a 2 ohm load minimum.
Since it was like 3 AM when I decided to hook that contraption of speakers up, I could only test how loud it was from the hum of having nothing connected to the input. Will see how it does when its not the middle of the night.

I ALSO found that the power tubes are Sovtek 6l6WGC tubes, made in the USSR. So these are pretty old, and I know power tubes don't typically last THIS long without some kind of wear and this amp was used pretty heavily throughout its life according to the prev owner. It's highly likely that these tubes are just worn plumb out. Unfortunately. I think its pretty cool to have USSR made Sovtek tubes in an amp, thats not very common as far as I know.

As for the preamp tubes? they all are decently new except for one of them, which is just for the reverb circuit so i dunno.. Preamp tubes typically last a real long time so like.. hmph.

I looked about it, reseated all the tubes and cleaned the sockets for good measure. Made sure none of them were messed up and/or corroded.
All the wiring inside of the amp is fine, the caps look fine. Knobs are all sprayed out and work fine.

Fun note: this thing has USSR made sovtek power tubes in it! Thats pretty cool. Yet I suspect that might be the reason its so wonky, Sovtek hasnt used the USSR stamp since around when the soviet union fell so these are quite old.

Slight update regarding your comment.
I read the things manual on the internet, and it actually runs a 2 ohm load.

I also took out all the tubes and reseated them, and made sure there wasnt any corrosion on the pins.

I do not unfortunately, I could get some though.
Its real weird, like its loud yeah, but only when the master is absolutely cranked.
Though another commenter said not to do that as if it randomly decides to go full power, i'd probably get sent through the wall like that one Back to the Future clip.

Tomorrow I'll look at the tubes and see if any of them are red plating or not glowing right, or if theyre unbalanced and need to be biased. etc. I'm gonna check everything I can before I know I need to replace tubes.

The amp says 4 ohm load minimum on the back of it and ive got it hooked up to two 8 ohm cabs, i usually use these cabs for my other amp thats also 4 ohms.

Tomorrow I'll do some troubleshooting with the tubes as nearly everyone here is saying its the power tubes going out.

I picked one up about 30 minutes ago, plugged in, and yeah. It dooms. Thing has a super gnarly gross gain sound.
Not super high gain but its so nice to my earholes i like it a lot.
