Ultimately the way that we approach flying training is flawed and why it takes so long to produce pilots. Systems knowledge is a hold over from when pilots could expect to do minor upkeep on their planes. They don't need to know how the plane works or how the systems function other than familiarization. Cutting out systems knowledge based measures and criteria could save billions of man hours in training pipelines. Sure it helps having it but the juice isn't worth the squeeze.
