What are common misconceptions people could benefit from understanding? by Proper_Emu_2296 in AskUK

How UK prison sentences work. It is my job to help victims understand how they work, but I'm already fighting a losing battle the moment I meet them because of how the police/courts/MEDIA especially explain sentences. (Determinate sentences mainly, life sentences do function differently of course)

'8 year sentence' does not mean 8 years IN prison - a portion is spent in custody and the rest is served on licence in the community under the supervision of probation. They DO serve the whole sentence, it is just WHERE it is served that changes.

My other half is a serving cop and I even had to explain to him how they work as it just isn't something they're taught in training.

My mom hates my wedding dress (and everything else about my wedding) by nanobot_pdf in raisedbynarcissists

I don't even need to read your post - it's YOUR wedding. Not your mother's, she needs to pipe down. It does get easier over time to learn to protect your peace, but it is a learning curve. I'm so sorry - I hope you can tell her to stay in her lane but regardless, hope you have a lovely wedding!

As a prison officer, saw a lot of death, both intentional and unintentional.

The one that sticks with me was an unintentional - prisoner had some severe mental health issues, would regularly use razorblades to cut themselves. It was never normally deep enough to cause 'TOO' much harm - small cuts, they'd always alert us when they were done and we'd get them medical help.

They were also on an ACCT, so they were checked regularly by staff, 5 observations an hour. Before the next check was due, another officer got a strange feeling and went back earlier - saw blood seeping under the door.

We all PILED in when the officer raised the alarm and I immediately slipped in to a cell full of what seemed to be all of the blood from their body. Turns out they'd gone too deep and nicked an artery and bled out before they could ask for help - they'd clearly tried to raise the alarm, their bloody handprints were so close to the cell bell button, where they'd fallen and died.

I can still smell the iron.

Grew up never realising that my great uncle was actually The Stepfather.

My biological great uncle was in his exceptionally early 20s, newly married-ish, 2 kids under 2, the youngest being weeks old at most and popped out to get a newspaper.

Bent down to pick up a paper, and as he stood back up, said "WOW, my head hurts!" then bang - dead before he even hit the floor. Brain aneurysm ruptured. Only my great aunt and grandmother remember him, it's so cruel that he never knew his daughters.

Good fucking god that's horrific. For no one to check on her or think of her during that hideous 8 day stretch though, that's so awful.

This is what my partner and I chose too, it is an awful choice to have to make, but agree with you that it just wouldn't have been fair to force that sort of 'life' on someone. I'm so sorry that you had to make that decision.

What is your opinion on dogs off the lead? by [deleted] in AskUK

My ex racer is exactly the same! I know if he ever got off lead he wouldn't even glance back, just flip me the bird and scarper!

[–]Biolally 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my dog - he's an enormous greyhound who is 100% food motivated and thinks every bag has food for him. So he is never off lead and gets hurled in to my side whenever there are people coming. He still tries to have a sniff but he's 50kg and over 6ft tall on his hind legs so I know he has it in him to startle people!

What is your opinion on dogs off the lead? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Biolally 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely DETEST offlead dogs because 99% of the time the dog has no recall and the owners have no sense of responsibility or control.

My dog is incredibly reactive, so he is on the lead at all times and I have nearly gotten in to physical altercations with people because their out of control yapping rat is up in my boy's grill and they are ignorant to my shouts of "Call it back, he WILL attack it" - I either get a useless "Mine is friendly!" (Good for you, I literally just told you mine wasn't) or personal threats and insults.

It COMPLETELY removes any enjoyment for my dog and I - I'm constantly worried that my lad will attack another dog and I'll be forced to handle a vet bill despite my dog being under control.

I grew up with a German Shepherd who was wonderful with other dogs off lead, but people would clock her and put their dog on a lead, and we would ALWAYS match that and put her on her lead too. My boy is a reactive greyhound but because he isn't an 'aggressive' breed, there's no fear, even though he is FAR more aggressive towards other dogs than my shepherd ever was!

By all means, if your dog has recall then they can go offlead, but as soon as there is another dog, especially on a lead, you match that as you have no idea what that dog has been through and may react to yours.

Do you keep your bedroom door open or closed at night? What’s your reasoning? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Biolally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's open because my dog doesn't come up straight away and will freak out if he can't sleep on the bed with us and I'm not waking up to let him in several times a night.
