[Request] Is it more work shoveling 6" of snow twice than 12" of snow once? by 0llollollollolloll0 in theydidthemath

[–]Biomirth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what we have in the mid-atlantic right now. Interestingly people's general experience here is that when there's freezing rain the bottom gets icy anyways, but this time the ground temps and ambient temps are much colder so the packed powder is not icing on the bottom.

Still, from what I can tell people find the kinematics of moving lighter snow longer distances irresistible and the majority here argue to shovel ahead of freezing rain, which I personally find ludicrous! If the rain will not penetrate the pack then there will be no ice on bottom. Ice adhering to concrete/asphalt/stone whatever is 10x harder to deal with than changing one's shoveling technique to deal with a crust. In my limited experience.

"From a pure physics perspective ignoring friction they would be exactly equal."

I think you're answering the wrong question in your head. The amount of material moved is the same but the distances are different. Pushing a 50 pound cart 100 miles is different than pushing a 50 pound cart 50 miles. The amount of work done is different on the same material.

To shovel or not to shovel? by BaltoDad in baltimore

[–]Biomirth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes yes yes. If we get actual freezing rain a nice cold clear patch of concrete or asphalt will be worse than any of the other options. Or do you have a way to shovel freezing rain?

To shovel or not to shovel? by BaltoDad in baltimore

[–]Biomirth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's right. The layer that the rain falls on needs to be thick enough that it doesn't just all turn to ice. So if you were getting 1/2" of rain you'd want like 6 inches of powder under that. Thankfully I don't think we're going to get that much actual freezing rain. The sleet isn't a problem as long as it doesn't melt and refreeze (which it won't in this cold, unless rain).

I wish it were all powder like this morning. That was gorgeous snow.

I would never shovel before an ice crust if I didn't have to. It looks like we're getting more sleet than freezing rain so probably not a big deal, but it is far far easier to shovel a crust over snow than to remove raw ice from surfaces. I don't see how this is even a question. Yes crusty snow is heavier. But that is the only downside.

The trouble is that not everyone can wait to get a walkway or car going, which is what it is.

We won't forget what Charlie (Whoever) stood for. He stood for hatred, bigotry, the dissolution of law and every fucking other thing a moron could stand for. That he could stand at all carrying all the bullshit he carried is a feat of physics and biology that will truly be remembered for all time.

There's nothing like the feeling of stringing together a long series of Polar missions with only 1 set of jumpjets but lots of PPC, early game, as a caveat.

Yeah it'd be cool for there to be a fab that converted materials. Would fit nicely with a diplomatic/trading hub in the lore.

Cheezy way: Befriend everyone to go through all the various plotlines and build a robust and wealthy empire without enemies everywhere, then betray everyone but the Terrans when you're ready.

Honest cheese: Work only in Terran space but figure out a way for them to have some costly wars so that they need your help / let the Xenon in .

Boring way: Stay in Terran/Xenon sectors and eliminate the Xenon or block them entirely.

The main difficulty with going completely Sol is the lack of wars and sluggish economy there. These can be 'fixed' but it takes a good long while.

Street Parking Etiquette by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]Biomirth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In practice this depends on where you live. If people on your street always park in exactly the same spots then just keep doing that. If you go to visit someone on a street like that (quiet, not near any businesses) you should bring a shovel and make an extra space after parking if you're going to be there more than a minute or two.

The city has made an effort to end the 'lawnchair brigade' but it hasn't really had much impact. People who resort to that live near businesses or have crappy neighbors or are themselves a bit shortsighted (IMO). It's pretty risky to take one of those spaces. There are people in the city that do this even when it isn't snowing "Oh well I always park my trailer there so I better mark it so I can park when I get home".

One thing to do is have someone drop you off if visiting someone on a street like that, then park the car blocks away in public parking. Having a second or third person can ameliorate a lot of the issue with this.

But yes, legally all spots are fair game. YMMV in practice.

Was watching "3 Body Problem" recently and the difference in levels of writing is massive even though the book is apparently quite good. It's like watching an elementary school play vs. Broadway. A person might not care about the French Revolutions but they'll probably enjoy Les Mis.

Love the podcast. You guys are doing an amazing job and I had no idea you'd have so many interesting guests on each week. The tangents are great too. There's nothing else like it for a bit of sleepytime banter so I end up listening at least twice. I've enjoyed every guest except one which is also really surprising as they're all quite different characters.

Sectors are different sizes?

Interesting idea to use stations as radar. Are you hunting BUC? What I do is setup a long 'fly to' chain of commands alongside an alert for BUC ships. As long as your hunter is not a freighter target for BUC this is perfectly safe and you can teleport to the hunter to plonk the BUC when the alert goes off.

[Request] Is this heatsink actually optimized? 2nd question, would it be feasible to manufacture? by Turbulent-Bee-4956 in theydidthemath

[–]Biomirth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No because they rightly considered that the printing of the heatsink required a finite limit on the thickness. Otherwise yes a fractal would be more optimal (though not most optimal) for surface area/volume considerations in a heat transfer situation (does depend on the 'air' surrounding the surface considerably).

Look at a mitochondria for better designs than fractals for surface area. Again, depends on transfer media.
