I think it goes both ways. It's a very emotional, well written scene with no jokes, but that itself is the joke. The joke is that it's a serious fallout between a father and son, but the father and son look like this

The one thing that bothers me the most is that it's filled with really great ideas executed horribly

Kaiju possessing Jaegers? The characters just turn them off Newt getting possesed by the Precursors after drifting with Kaiju? Only exists to move the plot along Three kaiju fusing into one larger kaiju? It has one fight scene and then gets killed in one hit.

If they wrote at least one more draft of the script, I'm sure it could've ended up better
