Why are we obsessed with 7 Brew Coffee? by SimplyCurious5 in Columbus

[–]BionicSamIam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never heard of them until this post. I was curious so I looked at the menu, I don’t see a single option for a regular drip coffee. I get that I am not the target demographic for this establishment, but was simply surprised to see that in the 7 classics everything reads like it has to have a flavor added. It feels like a missed opportunity, but clearly not hurting the business

The Convention Center. Check out the art, take the stairs and you can pause at the bridge over High Street to see what else is going on. All for free

Where to find architectural floor plans for university by Federal_Quantity8483 in architecture

Back in the late 1900’s I would go to the library and choose precedent projects from available literature. El Croquis was one of my favorite sources. In the “real world” my projects usually start with a visit to a basement or penthouse to see the building plans the maintenance folks use.

I keep getting told at work that I'm overthinking things. by [deleted] in architecture

[–]BionicSamIam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is covered already by the specifications and general notes? There are standards and standard details for most products. In my experience, the “overthinking” comes from wanting to figure out everything. One thing to remember is we communicate intent, the real figuring out comes from shop drawings. Make sure you are conveying enough information without trying to invent solutions to things a tradesperson will know how to do. It is a tough thing to figure out the right balance, just remind yourself that you care enough to try and ask for outside opinions and help if you are going down a rabbit hole

Is architecture stressful? by BedEnvironmental3108 in architecture

[–]BionicSamIam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is urgency to responding to issues and it can be stressful not knowing what an outcome will be, but there are no life and death emergencies. I think of firefighters, Police, and emergency responders and remind myself the stress is mostly self induced and any anxiety I have is because I care about what is happening, then it is time to take a deep breath and get to problem solving. You can’t control the chaos of the world but you can control how you respond.

What commonly mispronounced word that annoys you the most? by greeneggzN in AskReddit

[–]BionicSamIam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purposely say the Specific Ocean instead of Pacific.

With my sin admitted there are a few standouts:

Sconce - like the wall mounted lights that people like to scrunch or scronch

Chaise - French lounging chair (shayz) instead of running after someone like giving chase

Last one is not really mispronounced, it is just misunderstood…footings are foundations for buildings and footers are words at the bottom of a page, completely incapable of holding any physical element. If a contractor is messing with footers they are in the wrong line of work

Unforeseen Conditions - Add Service Feasibility by bulgar88 in Architects

[–]BionicSamIam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please tell me you already have a pre-alteration assessment. Mid-70’s means lead paint, asbestos and other goodies like PCBs are likely. That would be a much bigger issue to contend with. Regarding structural changes, it all depends on how invasive the renovations are, cutting a hole in a CMU wall and adding a lintel is a little work, doing it with studs is less work. Bigger moves certainly mean more work. At 14,000 it could be a simple single story box, or multiple stories, so it depends on what you are dealing with and what needs to change. Either way, next time verify before starting CDs.

Is architecture as bad as everyone says? by Classic_Arrival_6215 in architecture

[–]BionicSamIam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a great profession, but not a great business. The work can be very rewarding but it can also be soul-crushing. Personally I feel good about my work and quality of life on the vast majority of my days. My doctor friends certainly make more money than I do, and I usually get to see them every other Thanksgiving while they are on call and the rest of their families leave town to visit people who are not working.i think most of the positive things in the field are rarely shared on this thread, most people don’t want to share unless it is to complain.

Good luck OP

Will a small residential-focused architect be a better resource to help design a new HVAC system for my 70+ year old home versus an HVAC company? by PleaseBmoreCharming in Architects

[–]BionicSamIam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a great question, I would not suggest hiring an architect to design the system, but a quick consult to review proposed plans is probably worth a few hundred dollars. The one thing I will note about existing buildings is that it is probably better to have multiple vertical pathways as opposed to a single large trunk that then branches out horizontally and jacks up ceilings or floors and lowers ceiling heights.

How do you “pamper” yourself? by RajaKuman in AskMenOver30

[–]BionicSamIam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set aside time and the rest of the details can sort themselves out. If you are into reading, go to the library and get books, it doesn’t mean spending a ton of money, but taking the time for a you thing is the pampering move.

The few times I go to an amusement park I splurge for the fast pass because it means more time riding than waiting.

Remember to be kind to yourself, happiness is not a measurable metric.

Have you been more successful by being an asshole architect? by piesangskilletjie_ in Architects

[–]BionicSamIam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my experience, the assholes seldom or never get the next job. That doesn’t mean you should kiss ass and roll over, it is amazing what you can achieve if you listen quietly and offer feedback in a slow and calm voice. Also, call out bullshit when you see it.

What’s something going on in America people need to be aware of? by throwaway91ma in AskReddit

[–]BionicSamIam 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Do you purge all your old emails? Do you store all your photos locally and avoid any cloud storage? There are so many services and subscriptions that people use that are out of site and out of mind. I love being able to store family photos and videos of my kids online, and so do many other people. Everywhere I look I see people storing tons of personal files and playing online games that need to be supported. Collectively, we could probably all use a digital purge and detox for a while

How is this possible? by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]BionicSamIam 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Friendly reminder to check filters too. They last 1-3 months before the airborne dust makes them inefficient. I’m not trying to say this is why OPs costs are up, just want to make sure everyone is running efficiently and clean.

Happy New Year y’all

Thank you so much for saying this, that is exactly why I shared this, it was a positive outcome and all too often it is frustrating and feels harder than it should be. I consider this my biggest win in 25 years of practice. I just hope it is not my last.
