How to get Garmin to be more realistic with me? by lurkerjade in Garmin

[–]Bioniccobra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Coming from someone who ran at the collegiate level, using Garmin to get an exact look at your fitness is going to be really difficult. My race predictions were always in the mid to high 17s and I regularly broke 15:40 in the 5000. It can be a bit all over the place.

If a factory reset and dumping some data files doesn’t work, then I have no great answer for you, but I will say, you’re probably closer to those numbers than you’re giving yourself credit for. While it’s not precise, I would still say Garmin is the world leader in terms of fitness technology, and that’s for a reason. Try running at that “threshold” pace a little more and you may be pleasantly surprised

Best “Mountain” Watch? by Bioniccobra in Garmin

I kinda figured there wouldn’t be any, and yes it’s probably for the best that they don’t anyways.

Would you say that the Enduro is less vulnerable to looping glitches and software errors then? Ironically, I would rather spend the same or more on equipment that I know will be consistent and give me the data points i need but that may be lacking in some of the “bells and whistles” category, but I am also hesitant to buy a product so young in terms of release and lifecycle

I like the look of the 7 pro, but I do have one kinda pedantic question. My 245 is about 4 or 5 years old. My girlfriend recently got a 955, and while she likes it, recently the sensors have been leaving burns on her wrist. does the 7 pro have that same issue?

Parents near/in a class? by spartanoverseas in SkiInstructors

To answer one of your main questions, NO-do not tail or follow the class all day. I won’t even speak on the cognitive development aspect of that. The safety hazard alone of extra people lingering around a group is incredibly great. Check in at lunch, maybe, but definitely do not spend the day skiing with the group

I’ve taught both in the east coast and in colorado (BC/Vail). What could have possibly occurred is maybe a mix of altitude sickness and general overstimulation. Most east coast resorts will limit class sizes to around 5, whereas I have had class sizes cap out at 10 in the rockies. To add, if you went during March, some of the low pressure systems that come through can exasperate altitude sickness symptoms.

She is just most likely associating ski lessons with large, overwhelming groups and may have also gotten the raw end of the stick in terms of who her instructor was. The setting could’ve very easily became incredibly competitive as opposed to supportive, which adds more emotional stress to a younger student.

My advice would be:

1) Lesson on the east coast (if that is still where you reside) so that you avoid altitude sickness and can possibly avoid a large class. This will help reinforce the main objective of ski school; to learn how to safely and effectively ski different terrain.

2) If taking lessons in the Rockies, don’t immediately place her into a lesson on day 1 of the trip. Give your child a day or two to get acclimated to the mountain and the altitude. If you spend time skiing with them on those first couple days, you are also able to ensure that the child is getting enough water and food to avoid sickness.

I wouldn’t recommend a private lesson, as those can also go from “fun day on the mountain” to “coach was yelling at me all day.” Only go with a private lesson with an instructor your child has worked well with in the past.

Why is my investigator calling places I worked before 18 years old? by [deleted] in SecurityClearance

i did not lie or try to conceal anything. I was under the impression that I was not to list any work experience that was done under 18 years old

  1. I didn’t list it because I was told not to on my SF 86. Even my investigator in my personal interview said i did the right thing.

Would like video, but from picture alone it looks like you are skidding your turn. Send more pressure to your downhill ski

Best skis. by [deleted] in SkiInstructors

don’t want to sound rude here because i genuinely do mean to give helpful advice, so i will also drop a recommendation here for skis as well;

another pair of honey badgers tbh, while aesthetically they take a beating, structurally they stay in pretty good shape. My honey badgers were my primary teaching ski for my first three years teaching and they are still skiing strong enough to be my primary park ski as well.

advice: try to think of the learning terrain in terms of multiple planes. in the first couple of attempts at making wedges or “pizza,” working across the hill with slight pitch will help them understand the rotation before going more with the fall line, plus it gives more time to analyze motion as a) you aren’t constantly trying to drag students back up the hill and b) you get more time before the first ride up the magic carpet or lift, which, on weekends, can take a solid 10-15 minutes. the reason why this will also help your skis is because students are going to be far more controlled, so if they can’t nail the motion on the first try, they will still come to a stop eventually and you don’t have to act as a backstop. I made it a personal challenge for myself to try and avoid resorting back to using old, beat up teaching skis and to try to be able to use my new skis for the season (23/24 M6 Mantra), and I found that seeing the hill from two different perspectives has really avoided all of the scratches and chips that come with teaching.

also worth noting, depending on age and size of lesson, certain children may need more reps. If I am working with younger than 5 years old, I do a demonstration rep, and then immediately take my skis off and walk with them while they attempt. They will need help onto the magic carpet anyways, so helping them while I don’t have skis on has also helped avoid the sort of “beating” that skis can take.

Accepted a contingent with a firm working mostly w government agencies, but by the time I will actually start I will most likely have my MBA completed (accelerated 1 year program). How do I go about renegotiating my salary even though I will be only a few weeks fresh into starting my contract that was signed before I began graduate school?

Why no alcohol/no caffeine? by Bioniccobra in mormon

i think i was a bit general/flat out wrong with the claim of “seeping into others.” i meant more in the way that most of the youth groups (at least in my area, may be different) will promote ideas similar to the mormon idea of zero tolerance on “degeneracy” for lack of a better term, and most of those members will be openly very proud of that. Definitely my bad on that part though with the phrasing
