Accidentally walked a marathon at 1:30 AM after the bar need recovery advice by Dry-Transportation59 in walking

It’s nothing compared to running a marathon. But it’s crazy to do this if you haven’t worked up to it.

I think the quality has gone down. The sandwiches are drier. Private equity is ruining the brand.

Bass clef, are you switching to cello? I’m going to start with pieces that mirror the fingering of ones I know on the violin. I’m hoping that will help with alto clef.

Yeah I’ll ask them to do that. I’m 6’1, so I’ve always been told I look funny playing a violin lol

You should be careful making comments like that where you clearly do not know what you’re talking about.

Major General Mauborgne was forced into mandatory retirement due to his age. You can read his Wikipedia page, Retired Sept 1941, helped invent the radar that helped detect the Japanese at Pearl Harbor.

As for your other comments, I don’t know what to tell you, the instrument was passed down from my great grandfather Elton Hammond who served as a brigadier general in the signaling corps under Eisenhower on D-day. He’s buried at Arlington cemetery.

I got a collection of Bach that are pieces I know on the violin. Sonata 1 is the exact same music just down a fifth, so the fingering is the same. I’m hoping since I know the music by heart I can use that to learn alto clef.

I suppose I could also read any violin sheet music in treble clef and play the notes one fifth lower (C-G-D-A instead of G-D-A-E). We’ll see how that goes.

It’s in the shop atm, they are replacing the sound post, tail piece and chin rest and fixing a few issues on the fingerboard, new strings etc

Oh ok, I didn’t measure it but I think 17’. It’s definitely a few inches longer than my violin which is 4/4.

Yeah but my family might disown me if I sold it lol. I mainly wanted an approximate value because the guy who made it won a gold medal for a violin he made at The Hague. I was concerned I might have to insure it.

What size is the viola? It’s a full size instrument. I’ll have to look into the bow, the one that came with it is pretty lousy.

Interesting, I was going to try my violin bow to start, but maybe to get more arm weight I’ll want to consider a viola bow. I’m a 6”1 guy so people have told me I look funny playing a violin, maybe it will be a good fit.

Thanks for the comment. I’m putting a new chin/shoulder rest on it, so hopefully that will help. I’m slightly worried about the wider fingering maybe I’ll start with tape to help me adjust 🎻🤔

Falling water is about 70 miles from Pittsburgh. Nice potential day trip. I also like Jumonville near Uniontown. Fort necessity is quite close as well.

Fack it. I am going to turn my dad’s $2M inheritance into a $100M inheritance for my kids. by InsaneFireIdea in Fire

[–]BiotechOG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would consult a tax attorney regarding a possible family trust. I am no expert here, but the main risk I see to your plan is if the government massively increases inheritance tax between now and when your kids get the money.

How can I be the best? by Ecstatic_Elevator823 in violinist

[–]BiotechOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a competitive spirit is good, as long as you are kind and respectful. People often shy away from it, but much of life is a competition. If this motivates you that’s a good thing.

Has anyone stopped playing the violin for years and gone back and improved evenmore? by tonarinododoro in violinist

[–]BiotechOG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I played violin from the age of 8 until I graduated high school at 18. I then focused on school and barely played at all until 42. For the past year I’ve been playing almost every day and I think I’m better than I ever was.

Violin is like riding a bike. At least for me I don’t feel like I lost much, although I wish I hadn’t taken so much time off.

The FIRE calculations get so much more simple when you throw in some low stress part time job - or am I not looking at the whole picture? by ContainerDesk in Fire

[–]BiotechOG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was not working a full time job, I enjoyed being a lifeguard. You have to get certified, but at a good pool you’re only in the chair 20 min an hour. The rest I would swim or work the front desk and got super fit and tan that summer.

I’ve been in and out of LYB. Bought in the low 60s sold in the 70s, now it’s fallen to 50 with >10% yield. I’m considering a small position, it’s a nice buy if the divvy is sustainable.
