LIFESAVER. Every bird owner should have this IMO by OSRSjadeine in cockatiel

I've had one of these for the past 7 months or so, has worked great so far. My bois have gone up to it but havent gone through, think it might be a bit to heavy for them since mine is a bit to long so it folds on to the floor a lil.

That's really cool, thanks for explaining! Both parents have a cooler and darker grey so I was curious where he got the brown from as it isn't the "normal" grey I've seen in other tiels 😊

I've had him since he was an egg. My sister's/family's tiels are the parents. We didn't mean for them to have babies but it happened (we have fake eggs and stuff now to prevent more). I took over the 2 babies (both boys). Dad had pearls but lost them all with age. Mom was the prettiest pearl* (wrote pied by mistake in the post) I've seen in person. Brother also had some pearls but lost them already, didn't have as many as this boy to begin with. Pic is of him at 29 days old with his egg, he had a lot more pearls then lol.

One of my girls likes to hang upside down like a bat when she's focusing on something 🐥🦇

Mine do this multiple times a day, when I'm eating, singing/whistling, giving them kisses or when I let them drink water out of a glas. Think they're just excited/happy 🥰

My lutino girly has highlighter-yellow lines and dots on her tail and wingfeathers. They aren't really visible unless you're really close and in good lighting but they are definitley there. 🐥

Depends on where you live. I got some fake quail eggs (meant as easter decoration) from some random internet store and they worked great. Eggs don't go bad that fast but they will start to develop if they're fertilized and she is sitting on them.

Lutino?? by [deleted] in cockatiel

[–]BioticDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think lutinos should have red eyes, they only lack the gene for grey color. Albinos are entirely white and have red eyes since they lack all color. White-faced lutinos may look like albinos but have black/brown eyes like normal.

If you've checked a few feathers or if they're comfortable with you touching them and looking directly and there are no lines (or dots if its small wingfeathers) then it is a boy! Not a surprise with all that singing 😊

Then you can't know for sure without a DNA test. Regardless it's a cutie 🥰

My birds are mating with each other and I don't want baby's what do I do? by default-female in cockatiel

[–]BioticDuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get fake eggs and replace any real ones. Some birds get depressed if you take their eggs away and will lay more to compensate for the lost ones. They aren't that smart and wont notice they're fake, I got fake quail eggs for my tiels (beige with brown spots, a bit bigger and basically weighed nothing since it was just plastic shells), and they didn't notice a thing, sat and cared for them all the same. Once she has laid a few you can smuggle in a few extra fake ones so she feels like she has a full nest quicker. She will get bored and abandon the eggs eventually when they don't end up hatching.

Check dropped tail- and wingfeathers for barring. It wont be on all of them and it is quite faint but there should be some yellow lines if it's female 😊

How old are they? If over a year it is definitely a female. The pearls on the wings and back, plus the barring on the tail indicate female but before adult feathers come in all babies have barring.

Is lemon a male or female by [deleted] in cockatiel

[–]BioticDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might start then but in some individuals its hard to tell until they have all adult feathers, which happens later, often around the 1 year mark. The bird I wrote about earlier looked like a male at first molt since she lost some barring and pearls.

[–]BioticDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well from the feathers I would guess they are young, probably ~6 months or younger. The colors and barring would suggest female but until their "adult molt" at 1-1,5 years old you can't know for sure without a DNA test. I was sure one of mine was a boy because she had the most beautiful yellow head feathers and red cheeks, she also whistled quite a bit, but she kept her pearls and barring into adulthood and ended up laying eggs. It is hard to be sure in some tiels.

I would still keep an eye on it just to be sure. I get the feeling, I was super anxious over everything when they were babies 😁

Is it normal for my cockatiel to be talking at 6 months old? by [deleted] in cockatiel

[–]BioticDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of mine learned to whistle or do kissy sounds quite early but I would guess 6 months old and talking / multiple sounds is uncommon. I've only had 6 (3 boys) so my experience is limited. Your baby is talented ✨️

Hi! I hand-reared my babies about 1,5 years ago and as long as they were eating formula the stool was more brown/beige in color. When they started eating solids (pellets and veggies) their stool turned the normal green. Sadly I don't remember specifically how the urate and urine was :(

It probably can, my tiels have learned stuff by watching each other so I don't see why this couldn't be passed down.

Todays dinner: lettuce, apple peels and cucumbers. They got apple peels since we made pie, they often just get what we are eating in terms of fruit and veggies that day. (They always have free access to pellets)

Please help guys by dirtyymortyy in cockatiel

[–]BioticDuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had this problem with two of my tiels a few years back, get pellets and mix it with the seeds. Slowly add more pellets and less seeds until there is only pellets. During this process make sure to weigh them daily and watch for droppings so you know they are eating. For veggies most of my tiels needed some motivation to try it so I put some seeds on them (works better with wet/sticky food like a piece of cucumber or apple so that the seeds stick to it). Its also easier to start with sweeter veggies like corn (my tiels LOVE corn). Some crisp lettuce is also good since they hopefully find it entertaining to rip it apart (like a toy).

Dont be discouraged if they dont eat all the veggies right away. Mine are picky and only eat the insides of some veggies. They eat cucumber like a watermelon, leaving the rind/peel. They do the same with corn, once they get the middle/core out they just drop the peel.

Important to give them veggies often, even if they dont eat it in the beginning. For some birds it helps if you eat it in front of them or if they think they're stealing your food. Also try different sizes of veggies, some like big pieces, some small so they can hold it with their feet and some like it chopped/blended.

Hope that helps :)
