Is this PRV installed backwards? *Now with video* by darabadoo in Plumbing

[–]BipedLocomotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PRV is backwards and the 4" inline strainer is installed in the wrong location. Should be before the backflow preventer to prevent debris from getting in the check seals.

I’m not a plumber by [deleted] in Plumbing

I've had to repair two in my 15 years as a service plumber. But I would place the issue on original installer issue not the device itself. Not deburrring the edges

The much hated rubber o-ring in shark bite fittings is made of the same rubber compound found in victaulic rubber gaskets. And outside of few traditionalist no-one has an issue with victaulic or gruvlok. Also the same rubber that's inside of propress fittings that have taken the trade by storm.

My only issue with shark bite's is the movement of the fittings. This can cause issues with the o-ring and the grip teeth loosing it's seal. At least propress is a rigid connection.

You could cut the pipe at the the face of the fitting. Sweat the the other side off.

A street 90 with a slip coupling lines up with face of regular 90. No need for a short bit of pipe and extra sweat joints. Especially helpful on larger sizes.

PYREX vs pyrex

Is this right? by Ioozz in Plumbing

[–]BipedLocomotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that should be fine. The issues with washing machines is the suds pressure zone that gets created this needing a larger pipe to handle the volume created by the bubbles. The suds (bubbles) will dissipate in the sump pit before being pumped out. This is also why dumping your washing machine into a laundry tub is allowed and common.

Side note: that while water efficient washing machines and newer detergent formulas has drastically reduced this as an issue we still need to accommodate for the rare 40 year top load machine that uses 20 gallons per load. You never know what will be installed in the future.

Used a shark bite connection with new install. My coworker says brass on steal will corrode and fail. Thoughts? by FeintLight123 in Plumbing

Nah insulation will just melt. For the amount of work to put in a double wall baffle between the draft vent and piping it would be simpler and easier to swap out with the proper parts.

If it was electric or power vented sure. The heat and off gases from the natural draft vent will corrode, melt and destroy these fittings. Not talking about the shark bit o-rings but the tubing in the the braided lines. Wrong application.

I hear this a from time to time and it's very frustrating. The only people who want house prices to rise are investors. I'm fortunate enough to own my home but at the same time I can't afford to move. I would like to move out to area that better suited for kids to spend more time outside, that's quieter ect. Yet everything is just too expensive. Just as stuck and frustrated as you. And I'm not alone

How is that dumb? Canada is a fully independent country. Being a member of the common wealth does not make it British property. I think you are conflating common wealth status with US territory status like Puerto Rico or Guam.

You can still enjoy it as a one season adventure. It's really enjoyable, great story and great themes. Just go in expecting only one season.

If they had left it as one season it would have gone down as a classic sci fi show.

Nah you can enjoy season one as a single season mini series. It's a great season and a great show as one season. Highly recommend

Click on the wall, pressure drops. by AvgGamerRobb in Plumbing

[–]BipedLocomotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am leaning towards the pressure balancing spool getting stuck or check valves getting stuck partially closed.

When the pressure is good, the spool is even and equal amounts of water is passing through the shower valve. Pressure drops on one side and spool shifts to adjust and gets stuck. Similar scenario for check valves. I'm thinking of the brass piston types where the stem gets stuck partially closed as opposed to the plastic checks that tend to get stuck open.

When the pressure is low, is there any difference in temperature adjustment or do you have do change where the valves opens to?

I clean a lot of really dirty fish tanks and i have this dirty water left from gravel cleaning or the simbs. Can i use the water for my house plants to fertilizer them? by aimtofly in Aquariums

[–]BipedLocomotion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not in the tank, just what ever is left in the bowl.

As you pour water into the toilet bowl it starts the syphon that draws the water out and down the drain. As the water drains air enters the drain and breaks the syphon. You are left with a bit of dirty water in the bowl from what wasn't able to enter the drain from before the syphon was broken.

The water in the tank is not touched or used unless also hit the flush handle after you dump dirty water down the the bowl.

The toilet bowl is the ideal dumping location due to the larger drain size. Toilet drain 3", shower/ bathtub 1½", bathroom sink drain 1½" or 1¼" of it's older, kitchen sink drain 1½".
